🌭 getting grilled

[So ended the text one humble weekend morning. Eunie didn’t have specific plans for this, she just sort of ran off and invited the whole app to the beach without considering the logistics. She did say to bring what you want but she was social enough to arrange some things for a bit of a beach gathering.

It wasn’t a lot, a few coolers and BBQ grills people can hand around and either loiter or cook at if they have the capability. If they don’t though they will be removed from the grill. But maybe that’s part of the fun.]

[Aside from the coolers, there’s obviously the beautiful sea people can surf or swim in all they want! The water is fine, a little cold but in a way that felt refreshing from the hottest days of the last legs of summertime. The tides were even and there was no real risk of drifting away, but don’t go too far out unless you’re a strong swimmer. There are lifeguards on duty but we’ve had enough trauma this month, we don’t need a drowning scare. Or do, I’m not your mom.]

[Not a swimmer? Well then catch up on your tan under the share umbrellas and towels laid on the sand. Or your sunburn. It is a bright and sunny weekend after all so no matter what you’re catching up on, get your sunscreen on too.

It’s also just as good for a little break from the swimming and the music to steady yourself before you head out or head back into the water or some piers you can walk down on your own for the same experience to just catch the sea breeze while staying up and about.]

[That being said, Eunie was not joking about there being volleyball. There are a few nets on the beach for a few different games to go on at once. Organize a tournament or just play casually. Remember though that there are normies on the beach and any Earth Shattering volleyball spikes might cost some property damage claim money. This isn’t death soccer, people.

Who am I kidding, this is going to turn into a disaster either way. Go ham, challenge the bird girl or just watch the chaos unfold and place your bets, kids.]

[As the day winded down and night settled on the beach, some folks were headed home or have gone there already to get the sand out of their shorts. But those who stuck around will get the pleasure of sitting by a bonfire not me as they bid a fond farewell to the summertime and summer vacation.

Or get in touch with their inner arsonist in a less destructive way.

Sit, relax and socialize, take in the ambiance of the twilight by the fire, roast some marshmallows or hot dogs. Maybe decide to camp out for the night. It is a pretty peaceful time, and it’s these small moments of calm with friends and loved ones we have to cherish the most when in recovery, right?]

[To say that Rose was having a bad month would be an understatement, a massive one. Since being taken back to Amal's she'd left the house on a few occasions, but she'd spent most of the time staying in. It turns out that even she can't pass up a good beach day, however, and she happily dons a cute two-piece in preparation for her re-entry into society.]

[When she gets there, she avoids the water. Her skin is delicate after all. Instead, she'll park herself under an umbrella with a pad in her lap and a pencil in her hand. She's going to spend her time at the beach drawing. Most of what she sketches is landscapes, but she'll do a picture or two of her friends--only when she's sure they aren't looking.]

[Once the sun dies down, she's more happy to be about. The last time she saw a fire was incredibly violent, so there's something extremely soothing about this one. She'll scoot in close, feeling the warmth on her skin as a summer breeze passes.]

[Perhaps, she can find it in herself to be social again. She'll turn to the person next to her:]

[Jun decided to come by as a chance to have fun and relax. He's wearing some swimsuit trunks, and there's a waterproof bandage over his upper right arm. He'll see Rose underneath her umbrella drawing and decide to approach]

[Rose certainly deserved a day of merriment after what she had been through. Leaving the cooking for now to the others, he caught a glimpse of her and approached with something cold to drink in hand.]

You appear to be in need of company, my friend. [A bit of a joke, but he held the drink out to her. Just a bottle of water, it was hot after all.]

[Okay, maybe this isn't really a surprise. Shio's not really much of one for beach activities, so he's more or less just assigned himself to the grills for the day. Hot dogs, burgers, various skewers. He'll even be grilling fruit if anyone's so inclined.

He'll glance over when someone approaches.]

B. Around the Fire
[Only when it gets towards twilight does Shio actually sit down and, like. Relax. He's dragged over one of the coolers near the one where he's sat down and if anyone sits down next to him, he'll just silently offer a drink.]

[Well he knows Shio's cooking is not one to be missed. He'll approach with a grin. He's wearing a pair of swimtrunks and a waterproof bandage on his upper right arm to cover up his seal mark]

[Waver was taking up a spot under an umbrella, with clearly no intention of moving from that spot. What, you expected him to go swimming or something? Good luck with that. He was opting to stay in the shade, a new pair of sunglasses on his face and cane leaning against his chair; the fact that the weather demanded wearing shorts made the necessity clear for perhaps the first time, copious scarring covering the lower half of his right leg.]

[...Which he really didn't seem to care that much about showing, generally more focused on the book in his hand. Something about him did seem uneasy--he may have been staring at the same page for a couple minutes before snapping out of it--but he'd greet anyone who came over with the same casual demeanor as usual. The weather's nice, the company's about as normal as anything gets around here, and it's been a long month.]

[Come nightfall, he would at least sit around the bonfire; fate forbid he wallflower all day. Maybe he did actually need a vacation once in a while...nah, that sounded silly. He'd settle for reaching over for a marshmallow.]

[Hey. At some point as things wound down and the bonfire had begun to die down, there was a quiet nudge over a mental connection. I'm going to take a walk down the beach. You want to come?]

Of course Ritsuka would say something like that to Waver. For that matter, she sure looks like she just got out of the water, herself, though she'll make an effort not to drip any water on his book there.

That, and she won't comment on the leg if he doesn't comment on the fact that the cute two piece she's wearing probably leaves a few faint scars of her own visible.

[With all the speed and excitement of a cat at 3AM, Scintilla sprinted across the beach, down the pier, and launched herself into the water in a flying cannonball. Sorry not sorry if you're in the splash zone.]

[As the day carried on, she could be found lurking around the grills, perhaps craning her neck to see what all we're cooking over here. Can you not see she is but skin and bones and no ability to cook?]

[Having never met a fetch quest she did not accomplish, Scintilla quickly set herself to gathering wayward bits of driftwood that looked flammable enough, dropping to sit down with her pile of sticks and dropping them into the fire when it started to burn a little low.]

[Shio seems more amused than anything when he realizes Scintilla's lurking. He even leans over a bit so she can get a better look at what he's grilling.]

I've got some chicken skewers going right now, but I can get something else going for you if you want.

[Zhongli eventually shows up and he is prepared for his first beach vacation in far too long to mention. He brings a cooler with him and a bunch of plates, and gets set up at one of the barbecues. It just so happens that he's wearing the dorkiest drip imaginable, complete with big kawaii sunglasses and birkenstocks. Glowing gold leyline tattoos are visible all along his arms and legs. He can't hide them, so fuck it.

What's a master spearman to cook, you might ask. Isn't the answer obvious?

Skewers. A sweet but subtly spicy sauce, pineapple, bell peppers, and a protein of choice. They're available in chicken, beef, and vegetarian versions, and perfect for eating on the run. Just try not to stab yourself with the wooden stick part.]

[Zhongli can also be harassed after the food is done; he's within view of the volleyball nets but not close enough to get hit by a stray ball unless it's spectacularly bad luck at work. He's set up a small folding table, large umbrella, and a couple beach chairs, with a half-eaten skewer on a plate beside him and a book in his hand. Every once in a while he glances over at the game, then it's back to reading.]

So what Arthur's gonna do instead is build the biggest, coolest sandcastle he can. Or sandmecha. Definitely sandmecha. He might be trying to sculpt some of the crazy vehicles he built in Hyrule. Is it working? No. Is it fun? Yup!]

[Zulius is going absolutely nowhere NEAR the water, but he can be found lounging on the sand. He happens to be lounging on a seat that's made out of his own hair, but anyone who's known Zulius for more than an hour by now should know the day he does anything fucking normally is the day he's been replaced by a pod person. He seems pretty relaxed, anyway, he's got a cooler next to him filled with frozen cocktails. If you come near enough, he'll crack an eye open to regard you lazily. ]

You want one? Think of it like a grown up Capri-Sun. Super fun.

[Zulius WILL linger a little longer, even after the party has died down as night draws in. It doesn't have to always be non-stop party time for him, it turns out. He's at least got out of his horrific hair contraption now, instead standing by the fire, roasting marshmallows to make smores because he is a fuckin' adult and he can make smores if he wants to. ]

Normally I'd say we have hit the right ambience for spooky stories but tbh I have hit my limit for that this month. Anyone got any embarrassing stories instead? Those are always fun.

[ You know who has barely gone to the beach? This nerd.

But when Eunie puts out that message, Lapis figures there's no harm in going - she's even made sure to dress cute for it too, very much uncaring about the scar now on display. People here have seen way worse.

And immediately she goes for the grills, having brought some supplies with her. She may not have used them before, but she's a quick study - after watching the others for a while, she's soon joining in and helping with food prep.

So anyone who hovers is looking will get a glance, expression fairly peaceful as she goes back to keeping an eye on the grill. ]

I'm making a variety of things, but let me know if you want anything specific.

ii. rock pools

[ Despite being at the beach, going into the ocean is not on the agenda. Lapis is horribly vain about her hair and salt water would not agree with it, so no swimming for her.

Instead she's more focused on what's at the edges, hidden under the sand and within rock pools. She seems... very intent on one spot, gently poking about before she lifts her up treasure -!!

- A dainty little hermit crab peering out of it's shell. She loves it already. ]

Oh, it's so cute... [ She almost looks like she's sparkling as she cradles the little thing in her hands. Almost. ]

iii. volleyball

[ I have nothing fancy to write here, Lapis just wants to play volleyball. She will happily play with anyone, but she is also incredibly competitive.

There will be no massive craters, she's not that strong, but she will absolutely want to win. If a "powers are allowed" rule is in place, expect shadow manipulation abuse. ]

iv. bonfire

[ As things wind down, Lapis will be one of the people around the bonfire. Her hat is either long gone or put away somewhere, but now she just ties her mass of hair out of the way as she settles down - content to simply listen to others.

And with the grills now off, making s'mores is on the agenda; while she's made some for herself, she'll also quietly offer one to anyone who sits near her. ]

[Apparently someone didn't get the memo because there's a very lost-looking goth guy dressed in a button down shirt and black jeans, and he's looking around trying to figure out what holiday he forgot about this time. It's hot enough that he has his blue-black-maybe-ombre hair tied up with a pair of plain takeout chopsticks. Scrunchies are for losers. (He doesn't own any.) The reason for him emerging from his apartment? He has a controller for some kind of thing in his hand and an unrecognizable homemade robot under the other arm.

He thinks he recognizes Lapis. The network, maybe?

He edges slowly into her field of vision, though he's a good twenty feet away. You know, just in case.]

[He sounds about as enthusiastic as Nathan Explosion going to the dentist.]

Life's a Beach
[When Josuke shows up, people might notice something... new about his appearance.

That is to say: scales. There's some metallic blue scales under his eyes and reaching up to his temples, more encircle each of his wrists and there's a few patches across his shoulders and another on the small of his back if anyone's looking.

Right now, he's taking time to get some sunblock on and if he notices anyone looking in his direction or lingering nearby--]

Hey, have you reapplied sunscreen recently?

[Either he's oblivious to any staring or he's pointedly ignoring it.]

Winding Down
[... Where did Josuke get that guitar? Actually, he's not even sure, it got handed to him and the person left before he could give it back.

So now he's stuck here with a guitar.

At some point as people are sitting around the fire, though, he'll start playing, without even really thinking about it.

... He looks a little perplexed as he finishes up with that song, though? Hm.]

Did someone say beach episode? You better believe Ritsuka is there. Most of the time will see her sporting shorts and a crop top as she flits from one person or activity to the next, clearly enjoying the chance to socialize. Places you might find her include:

- Checking out the tasty smells coming from the grills.

- Approaching anyone she knows or who otherwise looks interesting to talk to who happens to be lazy around the beach.

- Doing some good old beach lazing herself.

- Trying to round up people and see if anyone has a bat and a blindfold for some good old traditional beach watermelon smashing. (Wait someone brought watermelons--?)


[II. Seaside]

Of course, sooner or later, Ritsuka can't help but go for a swim. The day's so sunny and hot and the water just looks so good, after all. So there she is in a cute two piece swimsuit enjoying the nice cool waves.

"Are you coming in?"


[III. Fireside]

Of course, Ritsuka's going to stick around for the bonfire. A good summer episode just isn't complete without it, right? She'll happily say hi and motion you over to an empty spot nearby if she spots you. Or you might find her very intently focused on trying to get a marshmallow toasted just right.

Actually, maybe don't interrupt her concentration on that last bit. Or do and see what happens.

[ There's a certain someone who wasn't around for most of the 'beach affair', but that was for obvious reasons. Maybe when he was younger he was into the whole sun-and-surf thing, the idea of going to a beach, playing in the water had been fun, but...

Given his fun allergy he'd gotten ten years ago, and how it's gotten worse since he got to Kaisou--he doesn't make an appearance to any of the day's festivities.

However, that doesn't mean he's not gonna' make an appearance at all. Once the sun is well and set behind the clouds, he'll suddenly just--be there, as if he'd been here the whole time. His hood is even down and away from his face so he can actually be seen--a somewhat rare sight--and under his arm, he's carrying a watermelon, his umbrella looped and folded at his side like a bulky sword. ]

--I haven't actually done something like this in years, but.

In my opinion, the thing that goes together better than beaches and barbecues are beaches and watermelon splitting.

[ he's great at cooking, okay. 150 years wandering around a planet and you get great at cooking on an open flame. Except instead of grilled tomas meat or bugs, there's way more choice here. hot dogs are one thing, but do you know what's even more fun?

Catch Vash at the grill, with a bag he'd brought full of some fresh vegetables from the farm, cutting and mixing them on long wooden skewers--some with chunks of meat, some without--but everything gets a healthy smear of barbecue sauce.

...he's definitely struggling trying to figure out how the hell to properly slice a pineapple, though. ]

Internet said grilled pineapple is the best kind of fruit to grill, but. Half of this thing is woody and inedible, is it really a good fruit at all...?

[ one can find Vash the Stampede at the beach pretty well for the entire day--he's never been to the ocean and while the sand was definitely a familiar sight, the water was... stunning to look out at.

There's a number of times where the man--either dressed in a plain red T-shirt or shirtless, depending on the time of the day--and black shorts. Sporting a pair of flip flops instead of his usual thigh-high boots and red coat--staring out at the ocean, his usual orange sunglasses replaced with a pair of stylish ones he'd gotten months ago. A whimsical look on his face.

Don't mind the myriad of scars that litter him, or the whole. Bits of metal sticking out places thing. It's fine.

Any invitations to have him actually go in the water, though, is met with a startled look and a loud laugh--along with the man taking one or two steps back from the water. ]

Nononono, I erm. I definitely can't swim and that is waaaaay too much water for me to even consider going near. [ ... he's totally not scared, not at all! not of the water!!! ] I'm happy to just watch everyone else swimming, you know.

[freshly sunscreened and decked out in the sunhat takame had gifted him and vash for their birthday, kni made an immediate beeline for the water. unlike vash, kni was far from apprehensive of the ocean and any of the fairly legitimate fears most had around it. he took to water like a fish, having already spent countless hours exploring the river that cut through the gardens by the cottage.

right now he's walking through the tides, the water up to his knees as he watches the waves pull and push him between the ocean and the beach. through the water he can see tiny isopods appearing and disappearing into the sand, and so transfixed is kni by this that he doesn't notice the larger wave that comes up at his side until it crashes into him, leaving him to tumble over into the water with an undignified sputter. oops.]

[kni is nowhere near that bonfire, far from keen to be close to so many people he doesn't know. at this point, he's just waiting for vash to be ready to head home.

in the meantime, he will be walking around the beach as it gets dark 'hunting' (i.e. looking with no interest in touching) the little ghost crabs popping out of the sand.]

[The lifeguards have probably warned everyone to keep the hell away from this one very high viewpoint on the beach—something about possibly splattering your brains across the sand if you screw up the jump, or even breaking bones if you hit the water improperly because water is not a guaranteed soft landing, you guys, holy shit. They've probably stressed, multiple times, that it's a dangerous height to jump from and they are not responsible for any injuries incurred by being reckless enough to jump from that fuckin' high to win some goddamn cannonball contest, and that's not even going into how dangerous even just climbing it would be.

Obviously, some people hear that and take it as a challenge instead.

Because now, somehow, despite all the warnings and probably even the lifeguard stationed nearby, there's a shirtless, tattooed man perched right atop it like a bird, peering out at the ocean. The wind ruffles through his blonde hair, and he seems pensive for a moment, as if considering the danger. (Or, really, just thinking about possibly taking on one of those contracts he saw yesterday.)

Then—

—he jumps.

Pushes off his platform and leaps, going straight into a dive with the ease of someone who's done this a thousand times before. He lands with a loud and terrific splash, then pokes his head up above the water a second later with a laugh.]

Well! That was bracing. [Glancing over at whoever's seen him do this batshit insane stunt and then waving.] Come on in, the water's fine!

Edward brought...a lot of fish and booze.

He's currently grilling the fish until there's a nice char going on either side of it, occasionally poking it to make sure it's cooked. Also occasionally, he takes a sip of a bottle of cheap liquor. He has an open bag that is just full of bottles of the stuff, and if you look old enough he'll let you have one with a comment of:] Don't get too free with the grog now, the night's still young.

[As for the younger set? He hands them a fish on a stick.]

He's in the middle of taking off his shoes since they're no good for swimming in. Like Edward, he's covered in tattoos which are annoyingly difficult to mod into FF14 just trust me on this so they have that in common too.]

[Takame was certain the young lady who invited them all disliked him, but he was growing exceedingly restless. Like something under his skin would burst into flame if he didn't do something other than sitting around. So he took the invitation and headed to the beach anyway.

Ordinarily he would be more social with people or at least more active but this month he's kept a bit more to himself. People watching sufficed for him, he was glad to see people having fun. He spent a lot of time walking by the pier, probably with a skewer of food in hand and just taking in the sight of the sea.

He might also be fishing so there's that.]

[Something about a massive flame with people gathered around made Takame think back to the quiet times when he needed to rough it outdoors in Eorzea and beyond. He wasn't too terribly close to the fire for concern of setting off a coughing fit, but he had a slightly toasted marshmallow stick in hand.

Still, he looked far away. Like he was thinking about something. There was a lot on his mind, various issues, various memories.]

He's really killing it though, practically glowing and looking as lovely as the food he made. Even with dark sunglasses on he had a clear glance at any hungry person in his periphery.]

[As the day started winding down, Diarmuid was one of many chilling by the fire. Many a nights of his were spent fireside during his life as a human. It was nostalgic and somber but he showed no signs of the latter. Instead he was once again roasting food be it a hot dog or a marshmallow.

🌭 Getting Grilled
[It wasn't often that Elliot got a chance to go out to the beach, and he did like Eunie... so when he got the invite, he was happy to join!

But unfortunately, Elliot is the kind of guy that tries to help. And even more unfortunately, while he was extremely skilled in the kitchen - the grill was a beast he could never tame. So if you tried to order some meat from him, well...after some panicked noises while cooking and a lot more flames than usual--

What's left on the plate is a very blackened and rock hard thing that probably used to be meat. He seems pretty embarrassed]

[Elliot knew how to swim, but he wasn't the strongest swimmer out there. So he sticks to not going past knee deep as he enjoys the cool ocean water. To entertain himself, he's practicing his water magic by making the waves move around him in different patterns and shapes. He's extremely adept at it... or rather it's a sign of just how much he's practiced. ]

🎇 Bonfire Lit up your Life
[It's nighttime and it's time to enjoy a nice bonfire. This brings back memories to camping trips during his teen years, as well as a bonfire in his past life. Happy memories, for the most part, so he's pretty relaxed.

[Look, this prompt is basically here so everyone can just see what was hidden during the last simp or smash as he comes out of the water. But he's also a strong swimmer, so if anyone wants to go for a swim while he's there, go right ahead.]

[After the swim, Abasi can be found in a chair under an umbrella reading a book and sipping on a drink. (He probably stole one from Zulius.) There's an open chair next to him, if you feel like coming by and harassing him or just chilling out with him, he might behave. I make no promises though.]

Getting Grilled
Moxxie has, at some point, somehow come up with a pair of Moxxie-sized swim trunks with little music notes on them. Since they have an opening for his tail, they may or may not be dog swim trunks, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is he managed to arrive with proper swim attire. Of course, he doesn't really have any intention of getting into the water due to a vague sense that he has terrible luck with sharks, despite never having encountered a shark in his current lifetime, but in case he were to decide to, he's prepared for it.

Instead, he's standing on a stack of boxes next to the grill, cooking up some food. His means of getting up there are pretty rickety, though, and he and the stack of boxes can definitely be seen wobbling, so the whole situation is a pretty big safety hazard that he seems to be oblivious to. At least he's fire proof?

Avoid the Burn
After his cooking escapade is done, Moxxie decides lay out on one of the towels, relaxing and drinking his lemonade and munching on one of the hot dogs he cooked up earlier. Why he feels the need to lay out when he's already completely red is anyone's guess, but it's probably not habit since back when he was human he'd be just as red as he is now sitting under the sun like this.

Bonfire
As day fades into evening, Moxxie is fully prepared for a bonfire. He even helps to get it started, summoning a small flame to ignite some kindling before poking the wood a bit, shifting things around with his hands to try to get the fire going, completely unconcerned with whether or not he ends up in the fire in the process.

[This is her first time on the beach! So Eve's walking along the shore, trying to take in all the sights with open child-like wonder. The feeling of sand under her feet. Seagulls overhead. How the waves break and retreat, leaving crescents of foam.]

[Eventually she gets wrapped up in checking out the different shells on the sand. But those nearby might still catch her attention. Come say hi?]

[Eve has been learning how to swim this summer. She might as well get some use of those lessons!]

[In a black one-piece bathing suit, Eve wades out near where others are standing in the water. Safety in numbers, she thinks. She's read enough about the ocean to know it's a very different beast than a community pool. So she also knows the ocean is salt water, but that's still not enough to prepare her for how salty when a wave catches her off guard and smacks her in the face.]

[Eve sputters, shaking damp bangs out of her eyes. Yuck!]

At the Dunes

[Shortly after arriving, Souta can be seen hanging around the dunes. Those who pass by might realize why: he's talking to the grass. Because he can't visit a place without greeting the local flora.]

[While Souta did come wearing swim trunks for shorts, the water is a bit cold for more than ankle dipping. That's fine, though! There's plenty more to do at the beach.]

[Specifically, sand sculpting! With a bucket of wet sand nearby, Souta is slowly building mounds of sand. Those far enough back might be able to see the beginnings of a clover leaf. But from nearby, it doesn't look like much yet.]
