It's summertime in the city, and it is hot. With the fire element's presence, the month of August will be spent in sweltering heat. Nearly every day is sunny, with the sun constantly shining down on the city. At least it's not humid and stormy like July, but it's definitely the kind of weather you wanna take care to stay in the shade and keep hydrated.

Dungeon Gates

Since the start of August, there have been new gates appearing outside the city's barrier. Dungeon Gates, which normally are native to the Korean pennisula, are gates that are full of various types of monsters. Should any of these gates be left alone for a week, they will experience a "Dungeon Break" in which the monsters will be able to cross into Kaisou proper. As such, many app users and other combatants have been working hard to get these gates cleared as quick as possible. Luckily, they got plenty of rewards to be found if you brave the dangers, and throughout the month rumors spread about those rewards. There's even a pretty extreme rumor floating around that a special dungeon gate contain ingredients for a potion that can cure any ailment... though one wouldn't be blamed for not believing such a rumor.

While most of these gates have been rated low to medium difficulty, in the middle of August, a singular gate with extremely high danger level has been detected by Zodiac. As per the agreements made by the Black Order in exchange for their copy of the Jumanji game, Zodiac will send out a heads up to the Guardians about the gate- with expectations they deal with it. Of course, while the Black Order are given a heads up- there are plenty of other folks who have also been keeping their eyes peeled on the gates, and will be prone to join them.

Let's Hit the Beach!

For those not looking to spend these hot summer days having monsters attempting to eat your face- there's plenty of other options! For those looking to cool down through distraction, the Kaisou Fair is open throughout the month! At the fair there are all sorts of fun things to do: rides both tame and scary, various fair exhibits, carnival games, and of course a whole plethora of fair food - both the traditional and the cursed. Enjoy yourself some funnel cake! Or some pickle cheesecake on a stick! Or maybe even some alligator mac-n-cheese sundae... whatever that's supposed to mean.

Kaisou Beach is full of activity at this time of the year, with a section quartered off for some ocean swimming if you want to swim through the waves to cool off. You can also tan on the beach, or enjoy the various food truck offerings that have pulled up on the beach. It's definitely a good way to spend an afternoon!

And if you're looking for something more, or just to get away? Well, you're in luck! The owners of El Nido (a bunch of human sized sparrows) will be sending out flyers advertising their resort! This month, for only the cost of bird seed, you can enjoy a full week vacation at their resort. El Nido is located in a spirit realm gate near Kaisou Beach, and is a realm that is a virtual tropical paradise. So much so that the weather, while still hot, is just more pleasant to be in compared to Kaisou's sweltering heat.

Enjoy seaside hotel rooms with full room service, the pier side amusement park, and just the perfect relaxing vacation to get away from all your woes. During the day, the resort will provide all the items you need to have a fun day in the sun - such as buckets for sand castles, lounge chairs, giant umbrellas, sunscreen, snorkeling gear, surfboards- basically whatever you can think of that'd be great for the beach? It'll be there. They will also have food vendors that'll provide ice cream and umbrella drinks for you to enjoy.

During every evening, they will set up a bonfire party on the beach on the beach. These parties will include a large bonfire, a massive buffet spread worth of tropical foods, live music with a dance area, and an offering of fireworks that anyone wishes to set off. You can also head to a quieter part of the beach, and enjoy stargazing on such a perfectly clear evening.

Should you wander too far from the resort, you will happen upon a cursed pirate ship. There are lots of fences and signs indicating that this is very much a cursed pirate ship and you absolutely should not go on it. And thanks to a particular Welsh Pirate... they have also added a sparrow attendant who will make you sign a waiver making it clear you very much understand they are not liable for whatever happens if you ignore all their warnings. Which... if you do? Enjoy spending your week vacation on a dangerous pirate venture. Remember, you were warned.

The Spirit Bathhouse

In addition to the flyers to El Nido, any non-human (including monsters) or possessed folks will be receiving a formal envelope with an invitation inside. The invitation will announce the opening of the Spirit Bathhouse. It's a place made for beings of the Spirit Realm, where spirits and magical creatures can go in order to be cleansed and relax away from the human world.

Should you choose to go to the Spirit Bathhouse, the gate entrance will be located deep in the forest of Kami State Park, down a seemingly abandoned road near the Amat Hot Springs and through a stone tunnel. As you pass through the tunnel, characters will find themselves unable to take full human form - rather reverting to any monster form you may have to at least some extent. Once on the other side of the tunnel, you'll be greeted with a pier and a long expanse of water. During the day, there's not much you can do besides swim in the water or fish. But at night? A riverboat will come to pick up anyone waiting on the pier and take them across the water.

Once you reach the other side, the riverboat will unload the passengers into a Japanese-style fair ground, full of stalls that is serving a wide assortment of foods that spirits would enjoy. At the far end of the fair ground and across a bridge is a massive multi-story bathhouse. Here, so long as you brought money (preferably gold), you'll be treated to the spa treatment in their public baths. Attendants are available to help you get clean, or otherwise you can just have your own relaxation time- maybe catch up with other folks who've chosen to visit. Almost on any given night, there's a wide array of various beings that are there to enjoy the Bathhouse. If you wish for more privacy, you can certainly rent out a side room in which you can engage with a private bath there, or simply have a meal with you and any companions you wish to spend time with.

Of course, there's more to benefit from partaking in these baths than just an enjoyable and relaxing time. The Spirit Bathhouse is meant to cleanse, so any characters with ailments, especially corruption or magic-based afflictions (such as the flaws Energy Build-up, Healing Pain, or Become Shadow) - will find that these baths will temporarily alleviates or ease the symptoms to an extent. It's not a cure, and the alleviating effect only lasts about three days before the effect wears off... but it's still pretty good.

After your first visit to the Bathhouse, you will find that a quick travel option has been opened up on the Libra app- allowing you to quickly get to the bathhouse without needing the riverboat. However, it'll only be accessible during their open hours at night.

As for folks who are purely human... they will find themselves dealing with a different experience. Many of the beings in the Spirit Realm greatly distrust humans, so a human that wishes to go will have to accompany a non-human that can both vouch for them and promise to keep an eye on them. Spirits who are visiting the bathhouse will often give them a wide berth, sometimes being pretty open about how they don't like humans or their smell. And while they'll take their money and allow them to use the bath? They'll find the attendants much less willing to give them the five star treatment. Finally... humans who linger in this realm will find themselves start to fade if they don't eat something from the realm.... however, the food must be offered to them by a non-human. Should they take food that wasn't offered to them first? They will find themselves starting to turn into a pig.

Try not to think about all the pork items available in this realm. Please.

Aftermath

No matter how you spent the last month of summer, expect it to be a rather peaceful one! El Nido and the Spirit Bathhouse are here to stay, though the Dungeon gates will stop manifesting by the end of the month. Enjoy capturing your own summer memories, as the hot days continue on. After all, knowing this city? You should enjoy these breaks when you can, as they certainly won't last.

OOC Notes

The dominant element this month is Fire! Anyone with an affinity to the fire element will find themselves boosted throughout the month. This could mean a boost to their power, having more energy, feeling more inspired with creativity, having better luck on different attempts -- the boost can manifest in all sorts of different ways. By contrast, anyone with an affinity for Wind will be experiencing the opposite. Perhaps their powers will be weaker, they have less energy, they're having a creative block or general worse luck - again it can manifest in all sorts of way and players are free to play with this mechanic as they'd like.

[ Anyone under the age of forty is a kid - this is just how it goes. Boomer logic.]

Normally by eating fuckin' plants and... avocados and shit and telling other people how superior they are to everyone else. I think that's what actually sustains the motherfuckers.

[ But the guy looks really confused, so Husk is giving him another look. ]

[That makes more sense to Zevran than people just eating plants and nothing else. Why would they hate themselves so much? Good food can be as pleasurable as a lot of other activities, after all.]

[ His ear twitches, that... is not a place he had heard of but it's blatantly not Earth. ]

So it would seem. [The constant cursing, at least, is somewhat familiar. It puts him in mind of Oghren. Albeit currently more sober.] What is wrong with it, precisely? It has very good taste in baths, I must say.

[ There's a long pause. ]

...Okay so you're not from a world with the internet, I'm guessing. Okay, shit. What's it like where you're from right now? Like... do you know what electricity is? So I can make a guess on how much I gotta fill you in.

[ He and Oghren would be besties who would openly state they loathed each other at every opportunity.]

This is a nice place, one of the few damn nice places here, you lucked out. You seen the rest of the city, yet?

[Zevran just sort of stares. It's like Husk just started speaking in ancient Elven.]

I... cannot say that I do. What is it?

[Once this man discovers the internet, it's over for all of you.]

Not as of yet. I found my way to the baths, some pleasant company... and now I am here. Tadaaa. And so forth.

[ Husk looks skywards, shit. Now he has to explain the internet to an off-worlder when his understanding of it is shaky at best. He's 63. This is such an unfair ask the universe has dropped on him. Figures. ]

It's... fuck. Okay, so it's this thing. That people do on computers? ...You probably don't know what computers are. It's a way people can communicate without being in the same room as each other. Shit, they can be across the world and still talk to each other on it. Also play games and watch porn and gamble and... fuckin' whatever, honestly. It does everything.

[ He doesn't say "it does everything" like someone amazed by modern technology, he says it like a boomer who has to deal with the world changing all around him and frankly thinks it would be better if everyone still had 8 tracks. ]

[Judging from the blank stare Husk gets in response to most of that explanation, no, Zevran does not, in fact, know what a computer is.]

So... you are saying a computer. Is a form of speaking with one another? And also they run brothels? And gambling halls?

[Bro what the fuck is this mystical thing. Where can he go to this magic gambling brothel communication place?]

Not especially, no. I have been searching for something that will not empty my purse, but - [And he stops. Blinks a few times.] Have I... had a bell...?

[ Husk just rolls with it. He's sure one of the youngsters will clue the kid in later on. ]

Yeah, exactly. And just about anything else you could imagine, too. You'll have one on your phone... fuck, you need one of those. You need to drop to Zodiac for that, they'll give you one.

[ Again, where someone younger and more tech inclined can step in and teach the poor kid how to hell to use them. ]

Okay, we're gonna get you some food. It's not a bell, it's the name of a place. Taco Bell, it's fuckin' great food, you'll love it. Follow me, I know where the nearest one is.

A... phone. Is that where this online place is located? And they simply give them away?

[Look, he's not an idiot, but when you have zero frame of reference for this kind of thing, you work with the best framework you have. Which is not the greatest.]

[He looks down. Still wearing the robe, for now, as he hadn't had time to clean his armor yet. He sort of plucks at the fabric.]

Will this do? I would so hate to show up for a meal in poor attire.

Sure. Computers too, but phones mostly this day and age. And yeah. They wanna do something about the people who show up here without no rhyme or reason. Probably some sketchy capitalist trick somewhere, but I ain't seen one for the phone yet, so you should be good.

[ Honestly, Husk doesn't fully trust Zodiac and their intentions, but they've been doing this for years without anything being... too on fire, so he guesses this one thing works. ]

Husk just stares for a moment. He's reminded of Angel Dust - that spectre of his past life that he still can't decide how he feels about. It's the cocky, easygoing attitude. His ears swivel back for a moment, before he clears his throat, starting to walk towards the nearest thrift shop. ]

...Yeah. Sure, follow me. We'll get that fixed for you.

You make it sound as if it were a bad thing, my friend!

[Maybe Zevran won't be so enamored of it once he learns more about it. Or maybe the opposite will be true and he'll adore it. It's probably going to be the latter.]

[Perfectly aware of the scrutiny, Zevran spreads his hands, and arches an eyebrow.]

Shall I do a little turn? So that you may see the full effect of this... extremely modest robe?

[Yeah he's teasing. Sorry Husk.] Lead on, my intrepid leader!

It's a fuckin' nightmare, but youngsters seem to like it more, so who the fuck knows. Maybe you'll enjoy it.

[ It's so likely to be the latter. He can talk endlessly to everyone, living the dream.

Husk shakes his head, raising a hand, palm up. This does not help with the Angel Dust similarities at all. ]

No. Do not. I'm fine, I can see it fine where I am.

[ As they trudge towards the stores, Husk's ear twitches. Normally he prefers the silence, but this guy is brand new, so- ]

So. Where you from? What's your home world like? Other than... obviously, no fuckin' technology there, I mean.

How... young do you take me for, exactly? [Is this a height thing. Is this because he's short. And an elf.] I know my face is quite stunning, but I have yet to be told I have a... what do you call it? The face of a baby.

[Look, he's a bit tempted to do a little twirl just to mess with his new guide here. But that might be pushing it a bit too far. Instead, he just grins.]

[Husk squints at Zevran again, before canting his head. ]

[ Husk, you don't have to voice that like it's an accusation. He bristles at the comment, making a noise that sounds half-grumble-half-disgruntled-cat-garble. His tail flicks in annoyance as they walk. This is why he doesn't talk to people. This is exactly why.

Hah, they say that about where I'm from too. I'm from Las Vegas.

...Well, probably not so much on the beauty but definitely on the debauchery. This place ain't so much like that. 'Cept maybe the Entertainment District. They can be a little that way there.

[ Which is deeply unfair. Why do so many immortals end up looking young? Husk got his immortality in his 60s, so now he's a pensioner forever. That's some real bullshit. He pointedly ignores the chuckles. ]

Taco Bell? Yeah, I think there's one down there. There's a couple in the city.

I... do not feel particularly mage-like. No sudden need to speak cryptically about the Fade, nor turn into a very large angry spider. [Or commune with demons. But he'll leave that bit out, for now.] So no. I do not think "it" has happened.

[He arches an eyebrow.] And, also no. I am an elf, my friend. Why would I be at all "immortal"?

Yeah, there's not really a feeling about it, or... fuckin' turning into giant spiders. But it happens to most of us eventually. People get linked to elements and before you know it. [ He conjures an orb of water into his palm, there it goes, spilling away. He flicks his hand, tossing it onto the ground, where it splashes on the pavement. ] Ain't nothing to be worried about. It just happens.

[At the immortal comment, he snorts lightly. ]

Lotta people are immortal here. Dragons, gods, whatever the fuck Jinwoo is. I'm a demon and I'm fuckin' immortal.

[ Yeah, so about the communing with demons thing, Zevran... ]

Because I need to get you pants, and we can't get those at the entertainment district.

That - [And he promptly does a double take. Okay, this guy's a mage. Right then.] - That is ah. Somewhat disconcerting, as I have no inclination towards magic to begin with.

[He's the least magical being this side of Oghren.]

[And... then he goes very, very still. While somehow still walking. Sure, his legs are still moving, but the rest of him does not. Like a walking statue. A demon? Nothing about this stranger looks like the demons he is familiar with. That doesn't mean it's a lie, though. His weapons, they're not in close reach.]

[What does he do now? Besides stay on alert.]

Hm. You don't say. [That seems neutral enough!]

Not a lotta people do. But it's probably gonna happen one day, so you might as well make your peace with it now.

[Husk is good at reading people. Between his past life as an overlord and then this life working for the Order, he's got real good at reading people. He notices the subtle change. He doesn't comment on it fully, instead watching Zevran out of the corner of his eye. After a moment's silence, one ear flicks. ]

I do say. Why, is that a problem? [Another pause. ] Getting the pants?

[ They both know he is not asking about the pants. ]
