[With no context, no preamble, no nothing. Early on the last weekend of August, Eunie greeted the network with a message.]

🌭 getting grilled

[So ended the text one humble weekend morning. Eunie didn’t have specific plans for this, she just sort of ran off and invited the whole app to the beach without considering the logistics. She did say to bring what you want but she was social enough to arrange some things for a bit of a beach gathering.

It wasn’t a lot, a few coolers and BBQ grills people can hand around and either loiter or cook at if they have the capability. If they don’t though they will be removed from the grill. But maybe that’s part of the fun.]

[Aside from the coolers, there’s obviously the beautiful sea people can surf or swim in all they want! The water is fine, a little cold but in a way that felt refreshing from the hottest days of the last legs of summertime. The tides were even and there was no real risk of drifting away, but don’t go too far out unless you’re a strong swimmer. There are lifeguards on duty but we’ve had enough trauma this month, we don’t need a drowning scare. Or do, I’m not your mom.]

⛱️ avoid the burn

[Not a swimmer? Well then catch up on your tan under the share umbrellas and towels laid on the sand. Or your sunburn. It is a bright and sunny weekend after all so no matter what you’re catching up on, get your sunscreen on too.

It’s also just as good for a little break from the swimming and the music to steady yourself before you head out or head back into the water or some piers you can walk down on your own for the same experience to just catch the sea breeze while staying up and about.]

[That being said, Eunie was not joking about there being volleyball. There are a few nets on the beach for a few different games to go on at once. Organize a tournament or just play casually. Remember though that there are normies on the beach and any Earth Shattering volleyball spikes might cost some property damage claim money. This isn’t death soccer, people.

Who am I kidding, this is going to turn into a disaster either way. Go ham, challenge the bird girl or just watch the chaos unfold and place your bets, kids.]

🎇 bonfire lit up your life

[As the day winded down and night settled on the beach, some folks were headed home or have gone there already to get the sand out of their shorts. But those who stuck around will get the pleasure of sitting by a bonfire not me as they bid a fond farewell to the summertime and summer vacation.

Or get in touch with their inner arsonist in a less destructive way.

Sit, relax and socialize, take in the ambiance of the twilight by the fire, roast some marshmallows or hot dogs. Maybe decide to camp out for the night. It is a pretty peaceful time, and it’s these small moments of calm with friends and loved ones we have to cherish the most when in recovery, right?]

Alright--I think I'd like that, too. And I can certainly stand to walk for a while longer, with such a good incentive to make an effort.

[But he’ll take the marshmallow anyway, and hand Diarmuid a bottle of whiskey in return. There’s already a buzz in the back of Edward’s head, a pleasant gauzy feeling that he sinks into so he won’t have to look at what lurks underneath it. Won’t have to think about bonfires on the beaches of Nassau, surrounded by those who’ve since died.

Instead he bites into the marshmallow. It’s sticky-sweet in a way he’s not quite used to, and still warm from the fire.]

You know, I think I may finally be getting used to this city and its foibles. I tried the subway for the first time the other day and I managed not to stare at the incoming trains like some piss-drunk lout.

[he pauses since his gut reaction is to go "NO NEVER" because he has issues. But he probably should...swallow his pride. ]

As much as I admit it....probably, if we want something edible.

[fortunately, he isn't being dragged out by the waves, but he is sitting in the water with a mildly stunned look on his face.]

... Yeah.

[his sunhat, knocked off by the wave, is now bumping up against ritsuka's leg floating atop the water. kni shakes his head, sending droplets everywhere.] Yes, I'm fine.

[ While her attention had been on the little crab in her hands, she does quickly notice the figure edging towards her - her head lifting up now as she looks over at him, brows furrowing just slightly. He sure sounds... thrilled to be here.

But between that, how he looks and the robot in his arm - ]

I wasn't expecting to see you here, Blade. [ Judging by how he's dressed though (are those fucking chopsticks in his hair???) it doesn't seem like he was aware of the gathering. And she has a feeling that if he was aware, he wouldn't be here.

Either way, she's going to close some of that distance between them, mostly just so she can actually show him what's in her hands. ]

I did, it was this little one... [ And she holds her hands out to show the little hermit crab peering out of its shell, still being gentle so she doesn't jostle it. ]

I've only seen them in pictures and videos before.

I mean, I was going for a good defensive weapon, but you do you, El.

[He's definitely teasing. He gives Elliot a little wink-wonk to show it. ]

Uhhhhhh, I think it was fifteen minutes?

Oh good, he's okay. That's a relief. Ritsuka will just... pick up that hat to bring over to him, then.

"Just caught you by surprise, huh?"

I was not expecting to see you or anyone else, either. Your name was Lapis, was it not? [What the hell did he miss...? Maybe he should check the network more often. He's trying not to live on it.] Is today significant? I came to test this robot I pulled out of storage. [Hence why he looks like he did not dress for a party.

Lapis comes closer, though, and while there's some hesitation, he doesn't step back. It's not like he's going to explode at any moment—not unless that dragon guy shows up again.]

A crab. [He sounds unenthusiastic but that's just how he sounds all the time. Don't take it personally.] This is my first time seeing one as well.

[He doesn't say anything for a moment, just watches the hermit crab with its big black eyes and wiggly little legs stare at them from the safety of its shell.]

It's... [...] cute.

'Course you don't! You're a bonafide hero type! And bet! We're having a relaxing time, you gotta let a little luxury in- as a TREAT!

[ His hair-lounger suddenly extends a little, enough for one skinny-ass human to sit down. Zulius pats the seat next to him like it's a totally normal thing to just sit on your bestie's magical fuckin' hair. ]

Give it a test drive, it's fetch.

[At the water comment, he snorts.]

HELL, no. I'm not getting this wet. That's why I'm staying way away from the water. That's for other people.

Zulius casts her a sideways glance, one eyebrow arching.

"I mean that works too, I was mostly looking for embarrassing stories about all of you, because my tea well has been dry," what with all the kidnapping and the murder and whatnot. "But sure, I can take some second-hand embarrassment. Even third hand, if you've got it."

It's a drink kids have. Has a little straw in it so they...idk, spill it less or whatever.

[He'll open up a Pina Colada, putting a twisty straw in it and handing it over. ]

I think this is totes your sort of drink, Babe.

[For he is full of knowledge like this! He flashes his friend a grin.]

So! Enjoying relaxing? I think this is the least stiff and proper I've ever seen you.

Still pass. I can think of a million things I'd rather be doing than swimming.

[He's going to consider this.]

Y'know, I never really thought about it before. Kinda figured sailors were supposed to stay on the boat. Isn't there that whole thing with planks? Like dropping into the water is a bad thing?

[He's seen Muppet Treasure Island once and based all his pirate knowledge on that and now here we are.]

[He absolutely has not forgotten. There's no forgetting that, much as he's sure all of them would prefer it that way. It's time for her, Takame and Vergil to try to figure out how to heal. To keep moving forward. But that's...easier said than done. ]

I think that's gonna take time honey. Baby steps, you know. That's something you gotta do on your own time. But I'm glad you're feeling better. I've been worried.

I haven't, no. I've heard of them, but I've never gotten a chance to try them.

[More for him! He’s mostly just treading water right now, content to chill here and enjoy the beach and the sun on his skin. He does raise an eyebrow at sailors supposed to stay on the boat.]

Ship, you mean. [This is a very important distinction and he will keep insisting on it until the sun dies out, possibly.] Most of the time, aye, better to stay on the ship than off it. But sometimes there’s treasure on the sea floor that’s only waiting for a sailor brave enough to dive for it.

Walking the plank, you mean? That don’t happen much. Some captains I knew would threaten it to keep their crews in line, but in truth you could expect to be flogged instead, if the crew decided on it. And many of us pirates got away from the Navy to avoid floggings, so.

I didn't realise you could grill fruit. I did some research before I came to see what's best to cook at the beach and this was part of it...

It said grilled watermelon too, but isn't that a bit too wet to be grilled!!!

This is a man way too nervous about the water than is normal. He looks down at Ritsuka, his bottom lip poking out.

"Aren't there dangerous things in 'oceans', too?"

[He takes the drink from Zulius and takes a sip through the twisty straw... which he's very amused by.]

[At his question, Libra just closes his eyes and leans back a bit in the chair.]

I'm not being a baby, the ocean is terrifying! There's THINGS in it that come up and out of the sand, you know, I've seen it!!!

[ no he hasn't. he's just watched too many youtube videos lately. ]

And I'm not whining. The fact that you're so chill about all this is weird.

[ he's inching closer still, until he's about ankle-deep, the waves lapping at him.

This so isn't safe.

[He'll reach over and pull the pineapple from Vash's hand, setting it down on the folding table someone set up. ]

He sure is abnormally nervous, yes.

"Waves don't get that big unless there's a lot of wind, and if there is then it isn't really good swimming weather anyway."

Well, there's other reasons for big waves, but no need to get into that.

"And maybe there are out in the ocean, the same way there's wild animals in the woods and mountains, but they wouldn't let people swim here if there was dangerous stuff like that around, you know?"

[ The sun's started to set, and that's the only reason he's out and about--he's carrying that umbrella with him that he always carries, but what with the sun becoming a dull orange, and how he seems to be sticking to the shadows for now, he doesn't seem worried.

He even casts he a smile when she remembers his name--pleased at that, honestly.

He lifts a part of his cloak, to where he's been hiding a nice, sturdy looking stick--kind of like a firm broom handle...? minus the broom. ]

That's part of the fun of watermelon splitting, I think.

Seeing how many good hits it takes until it splits open.

Then we can share it.

[ he gives a bit of a sheepish smile. ]

You're definitely stronger than I am though. I'd bet on it.

[ he may have been here the whole time, hiding in the shadows, biding his time until the sun rose. Unfortunately, there was little way to tell with jinwoo, what with the way the shadows seemed to cling to him.

Despite that, he looks pleasant enough, his hood down, a smile on his face as he gives his new pirate friend a crooked grin in response.

He'll hand him the watermelon, then go about pulling a few things out from under that long cloak he's always wearing.

A picnic cloth that's a little plasticky...and a solid wooden stick, like a broom handle, but without the brush at the end. ]

To put it crudely, just take the stick and give it as hard as a whack as you can.

Normally, there's a tradition of doing it blindfolded, but... if this is your first time, I'll go easy on you.

The aim is to break it apart as best as you can so we can share it.

"Oh! Well..." Give her a moment to think about that. "... Actually, I can't think of anything that's happened to me here so far."

She's been here less than two months, okay. There hasn't been many opportunities for a lot of noteworthy nonsense yet!
