So, in light of the current information on our next upcoming disaster and knowing not everyone is from Earth or otherwise knows much of mythology, I'd like to put forth a quick rundown on what we could be dealing with. For those who may not know me: I'm Professor Waver Velvet, and believe me when I say I've studied this.

Banshees
Spirits taking the form of cloaked women with long hair. Heard to scream, wail, sing laments, you get the idea. Doing so most commonly foretells the death of a family member, but an omen of death in general is also applicable depending on interpretation. Ordinarily they do not cause death, merely warn for it. Although I am not fully confident in committing to that, where things never quite turn out as I expect them to.

Leprechauns
Largely the bastardized interpretation of vaguely similar creatures, the folklore around them rose to prominence in more recent centuries. In other words: contrary to popular belief, leprechauns are fucking fake. Not that that will stop anything, because collective belief and magic are a hell of a feedback loop. Just in case: don't follow any rainbows, don't touch any gold, and in fact just stay far away from troublemaking little bastards in green.

Fae (general)
Carry iron to repel them. If you have or know of ways to ward against or see through illusions, be prepared to utilize them. Charms of rowan branches might work, as well. If you see anything like mushrooms or flowers growing in a circle do not under any circumstances cross into it.

One more thing.

I wouldn't, please don't. Fucking about with a banshee is bad enough, there's no need to put yourself at risk of worse.

yeah im sure theres plenty just so much stuff is made of steel now, and yeah steel is chemically mostly iron but that doesn't feel like a technicality that would work

yeah even if i didnt get anything risky or upsetting there's every chance id end up with nothing useful

banshees are a warning, right? My visions are usually jumping into someone's experience. i think it's possible to jump into future me but not typical. do you think i need to worry about th warning, or just whoever i was viewing through?

Right. Hoping technicalities will apply is dangerous, especially when it comes to playing with loopholes like this. We screw that up and we're just landing ourselves in trouble.

[There was a pause after that; a minute or so, following which the door to the library opened and closed followed by the click of a cane on the floor and a voice calling out:]

As to the other question...that, I'm not quite confident about. If it's a general death omen, there's no telling whose it might be trying to warn about. And if it's related to whoever you were at the time, there's still no way to tell. We don't even know if someone will die, the only definite thing I'm willing to go off of is that mortal danger will be involved.

[Arthur might still be in pajamas, but he's got snacks, drinks, and as many books on fae lore as seemed useful laid out in one of the more secluded corners. One near the section the books came from, just in case. He waves from where he's set up for study.]

I...hate how vague it always is. It might hurt more, if I ever got any clue who I'm looking through, but at least I'd have a little more direction.

You're doing well, there's no need to talk like it isn't enough just because it's vague. [Waver walked over and sat down across from him, sunglasses pulled off and set on top of his head.] 'Vague' is more than 'being caught entirely off guard and unaware', and I'm grateful for it.

....I think this is bleedthrough. Past life stuff. It never felt like enough, but past me always tried again anyway.

We just...do what we can. We know it's a banshee, so there's definitely fae and mortal danger. Prepare for that and be ready to adapt.

...I know how that feels. You can work yourself to death day after day until you reach your absolute limits, and it still isn't enough to do what you feel like you need to. But you can't destroy yourself trying to attain some imagined perfection. [That's only okay when he does it.] You're still young. You have time to refine your abilities gradually, at your own pace and without putting strain on yourself. What you're doing now is already enough, but if you want to improve then don't rush yourself.

I'd rather have conjecture and caution over a spirit screaming in my ear come next month, so being able to prepare for a known issue is already more opportunity than I usually get back home.

I don't...think it was about perfection. It was always trying to prevent just one more death. Find one more answer, prevent one more tragedy. Over and over and over. He was probably a lot stronger than me.

[He says that last part with a grin.]

... [Waver fidgeted uneasily with something near his collar, opting not to comment further. After all, that was a little too close to his own ambition--become something better than he was, gain power and knowledge all for the sake of averting one more apocalypse before it burned the world to the ground. And if he couldn't do that, then...]
