1. Luz

[ When Eda drags herself into the bathroom one morning and blinks into the mirror, she is unsure if she is still dreaming. She must be -- why else would her ears suddenly look pointy? Maybe she overextered herself lately, and paid too much attention to Luz's stories about the Boiling Isles. That has to be it. So she goes about her morning routine as usual: brushes her teeth, does her hair, puts on makeup and jewelry, the works.

The only problem is, once she is more awake, the ears are still there. She just. Stares. Reaches her hands up, for the first time, to feel them and -- yup, those are real. She thinks back to the flash of memory she once had, to a land where the skies are pink and the trees are crimson. And then she buries all of that, dashes back into her room before Luz wakes up and sees her, and digs for an old patterned scarf to cover her changed physique with.

She spends her next few days like that, making sure to always have a scarf or a hat or something covering her ears; but then one morning, she is in a haze of brain fog once again and forgets to lock the bathroom as she gets ready. ]

2. Raine

[ Okay, so maybe Luz ultimately found out about her little issue -- doesn't mean the rest of the world has to know. Her ears are nobody's business, okay! But she'd at least like to mix her new fashion accessories up sometimes, so she ends up stealing a few scarves; and on the way back from her escapades, she runs into her old friend once more. Raine Whispers.

How strange that this should happen twice in a few months when they haven't seen each other in decades before that. She just blinks at them, bag full of scarves slung over her shoulder. ]

Raine. Hi.

[ Maybe your character knows Eda enough to notice something's up? We can do something with that if you want. 8D ]

I remembered something weird when I saw your [ gesticulates ] staff thingie.

[Look, she hated to be stubborn about this, but it was an honest to goodness reoccurring thing with several people that they were getting foggy memories of places they'd been even though they were supposed to be living here all their lives. This just cinched it for Luz that this place was way more sinister than she thought].

MY-ok, fine, "my" staff thingie. What did you see?

[ Whoa there, kid's getting pretty bossy! Eda glares for a moment, but then decides that it's probably better to be honest now. There seems to be no fooling Luz, anyway. Still, she crosses her arms and looks away as she answers. ]

Just a short vision of me riding it.

[It was more that it was still strange Eda didn't recognize her own staff, that Luz NOW knew she carved with her father. It might have even been the last time he was able to carve a staff, as far as she knew].

Do you remember his name?

[She gestured to the small owl that made up the staff. He gazed at her hopefully].

Owlbert. You told me this.

[ That's when another flash hits her: just a little scene of her nail giving Owlbert some scritchies, and Owlbert cooing in response. ]

Oh. Dang. I really shouldn't have.

[Wait, was she seeing something in Eda's eyes, like she was recognizing him].

Now that I think about it, I don't think you've ever held Owlbert, have you?

No. I mean, he's yours. Or your Eda's.

[ Which Eda still very much thinks isn't her. And mostly she doesn't feel much while looking at Owlbert. He's cute, sure. And that one flash of memory she had makes her think.

Too much, really. She'd rather avoid it. ]

He's Eda's.

[Luz wanted to make it clear Eda WAS Eda, even if she was different. What was more, there was still the lingering wonder behind why this Eda was slowly starting to get memories of herself in the Boiling Isles.

For now, she had to see how this developed].

He's a sweet little guy! You should hold him!

Uhhhh...

[ Eda looks at Owlbert with apprehension. But he chirps at her and it's true, he's very cute, so she carefully extends her hand for him to hop onto. ]

There we go! Aw, look at him! He knows his ma-ah, maternal overlooking figure!

[Better not drop who the actual owner of Owlbert was, not with everything that Eda was dealing with right at the moment. She needed to be eased into it].

He likes you though, that's a start!

[ Eda can't help but smile a little. She lifts her other hand to carefully give Owlbert some scritches. He coos in response. ]

Awww. What a cute little guy.

[Owlbert hooted happily and seemed to snuggle up to Eda. Luz had to hide her tears a little: she really hoped that Eda remembered Owlbert eventually, and that she was actually the owner of the staff].

Who knew you had a way with animals?

I think I do pretty well with King.

[ She grins, but with a hint of awkwardness. This little owl guy sure is... very trusting. ]

What species of owl is he? He's so small!

Heh, yeah, that's true.

[She missed real King, honestly. She could use her little brother right now].

It's hard to say. He's a Palisman owl, so he was carved. Other than that I think he's just a regular brown owl.

Carved? You carve them and then they come to life?

[ Congrats, kid, you actually have her stumped here. ]

Right, but not from regular wood. It's from a material in the Boiling Isles called Palestrom wood!

Unfortunately, it's very scarce now. Someone is intent on harvesting and siphoning it all.

And who would that someone be? That evil Emperor you told me about?

Yes. He would be the reason.

If he had ahold of Owlbert, he'd steal the life right out of him. I've seen him do it to other Palisman before.

[And if THAT happened, Luz wouldn't hold back on what she'd do, even if part of her knew fighting Phillip would probably end badly for her].

Yeesh! Sounds creepy.

[ Eda doesn't know much about this yet and honestly is not sure how much she wants to know, given recent happenings, but... looking at Owlbert? That's a creature. That's a little guy. How fucked up do you gotta be? ]

It is. It's even worse seeing it happen, trust me. Seeing that essence seep into his eyes, it's just...ugh.

Yikes. So he... feeds off them?

[ Eda unconsciously shields Owlbert with her free hand. ]

Yes. I've seen him do it.

I think he's cursed, but I'm not sure how, or why.

And he's using the little guys to compensate.

I think he actually needs them to combat his curse but...he's still sucking the lives out of them, which is a scary thing to think about.

He'd do that to Owlbert, or Hunter's Palisman Flapjack.
