Does this happen often? I've been here a few days and I have the owl staff! He was in a freezer, with little hat and scarf and everything!

I mean, its technically not mine, but the person who it does belong to...um, is probably not able to use it right now, so I'll be taking care of it! I missed you Owlbert!

If you guys see anyone zipping around, it's probably just me!

[In the forest/ OTA]

Despite what she said, Luz was actually not flying Owlbert around where anyone could see her easily. She knew that it was lucky that she had him to begin with, and she had to be careful. The last thing she wanted was anyone to confiscate the staff, especially when it didn't really belong to her anyway.

For right now though, Luz is keeping low to the ground, getting some flying in. She missed this, being able to have her powers and being able to use them, since this place seemed to put a damper on that. At least here, with no one around, she could mess around all on her own. Hiding her magical abilities made her feel more and more depressed about being here so long.


[Cafe/OTA]

She thought with the latest regain, she'd actually be feeling pretty good. Then she got one other regain, taped onto the bathroom mirror. She's hastily grabbed it before Eda could see, putting it into her hoodie, her heart sinking a little when she saw it, but holding it close.

Now that she was away from everyone, she unfolded the picture and stared at the three people there who she was missing.

Willow, with her sweet enthusiasm and good vibes. Gus, smart as a whip and always willing to lend a hand when he could.

And Amity. Her Hermosa. Gentle. Strong. Wonderful.

Luz couldn't help dabbing her eyes, missing each of them and unable to hide it right now.

With a smile, Moana nods. "Sure. Anytime you wanna talk about it, just lemme know. We can have a good rant about it and maybe everything else."

Because that happens quite a bit too, talking about one thing and it turning into talking about everything.

"Honestly, I'm not too sure. I have to assume that some Zodiac people are involved, though I'm not sure if everyone teaching there is part of Zodiac. And I could be wrong."

Luz nodded, laughing a little. "I guess I've gotten kinda ranty myself, huh? You can talk to me too, if you're ever feeling frustrated about things and you need to vent. I think everyone around here probably feels they need someone like that."

Doesn't everything?

"I'm leaning that they aren't. At least, I don't get that elusive, secretive vibe from them. I'm definitely not feeling that from that one teacher, el-oh no!"

Luz slapped her hand to her face. "I'm going to actually start going to school, aren't I?"

"It happens. But thanks, I appreciate that. You're right, everyone needs that once in a while."

Moana shrugged a little. "I mean, maybe not all of them. But Zodiac does have a hand in a lot of things, so it wouldn't surprise me if some members are at the EEC too. But definitely not all the teachers are part of Zodiac."

With a stifled laugh, Moana nodded. "Yeah, probably. Sorry."

"It does, which I why I think we should look out for each other when it gets pretty intolerable. Those days are pretty rough."

Luz nodded. "I think I'm starting to get over a little of my distrust, but I still don't like how they seem to have answers and are still weirdly elusive. Like they like having their fingers on the pulse, but not actually doing anything to directly answer some of the questions we have."

She sighed. "I'm guessing we just deal with the regular kinds of classes, right?"

"That's for sure." Having people to talk to certainly helped with things.

"It's hard to say how much they actually know, too. They might be as in the dark about some things as we are."

Moanna nodded. "Yeah, pretty much. Math, English, science, history...all that fun stuff."

It sure does. Luz was seriously starting to wonder what she could trust these days.

"I want to believe that's the case. In fact, I hope it is. If I could just believe we all wound up here on some coincidence, I'd be a really happy girl!"

But after everything with Phillip and finding out his intentions? Luz was not about to be betrayed and left shocked all over again.

"Sounds great. It'll be like I never left Earth."

Which, honestly it DID feel like at times, only without the judgmental kids and faculty and frustration of not fitting in. Not having her mother was also a very unwelcomed feeling. It was bad enough to be in a world like the one you came from, but worst when you don't have the person that made it all worthwhile.

"Yeah. But it's hard to tell, with how little information they give us."

They can only really hope for the best, and do what they could.

"I mean...it's not terrible. There are at least clubs and other stuff that can be fun sometimes."

"Right? And they never seem to give us information without some pretense that they're just trying to help and are all on the up and up. I don't believe it for a second."

It just seemed very phony. Like Philip as the Emperor, seeming to insist he wants to do what's best for everyone while signing on their death certificate.

"That's pre-wait, what was that about clubs?!"

"Yeah. It's definitely hard to tell how much they can be trusted."

As much as she wanted to give people the benefit of the doubt, it's been pretty difficult with how things have been going lately.

"Oh yeah! There are lots of different clubs you could join. It's a great way to meet and make some new friends. What kind of clubs would you be interested in?"

"And how much does that help people who were already brought here against their will, who have no idea how much they're supposed to believe?"

To Luz, it just made you want to question everything!

"I mean, I like to write and read in my spare time, I'm going to be all over trying to gain my powers back, oh, and I paint! Does the school have clubs for things like that?"

"Honestly yeah. I can't blame anyone for not being able to accept what they say."

With a smile, Moana nods. "Actually yeah! It sounds like art club would be perfect for you. You know Mirabel? She was in it last year."

"But they also have people helping them because of all the stuff they offer, so you don't have to question it. That makes me feel even less inclined to want to help them."

What would they do with that information?

"Oh, great! I meant to hang out with her more anyway, and now I know we're painting buddies!"

"Yeah, I know. It just feels more suspicious, but I guess that's all the more reason to keep an eye on them."

Moana can't help a laugh. "Yeah, she does pretty good art! I can't really paint myself, but I hear it's pretty fun from her and some of my other friends in the club."

"I'll be doing that, you can count on it!"

And Luz had to wonder if they were doing the same.

"It is, if you have the right teacher and you express yourself the way you want to! Some people can be more abstract than others, and that's just what makes things interesting, people's interpretations of what they're feeling!"

Honestly, they most likely were. But Moana feels it's probably better not to really dwell on that for now.

"Yeah, exactly. It's really interesting to see what kind of images or ideas people can come up with. What kind of paintings do you do?"

Luz was similarly not trying to think about it. It was too disturbing and gave her a lot of the vibes that the emperor had been putting out with his cronies watching everyone.

"Right?! And there are so many art periods you can look up, so many things you can get inspired by! I tend to do portraits, but I can do landscapes too!"

"Oh yeah? That's really cool. I always thought drawing people would be harder than scenery, but I guess I don't really paint enough to know."

"I mostly draw people, so I've found that actually gets much easier with practice! drawing backgrounds though, that can be a bit of pain. It's a shame too, because some pf my favorite paintings have amazing backgrounds!"

Which was why Luz was always trying hard to get better with scenery.

"Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But practice makes perfect, right? I'm sure you'll be able to get the hang of backgrounds."

"I sure hope so. I have these big ideas for some of what I want, but I can't quite get them to look as good on canvas!"

She sighed. "You know, maybe school WILL be a good idea, in some ways."

"That's the worst, isn't it? Having an idea that looks so great in your mind, but not being able to get it quite right in practice."

She's had some dance moves that looked so much better in theory than execution.

"It does help as a distraction, sometimes."

"Luckily, that's kind of the fun part! I like trying to put it together, see what I can make from it, get a little closer to my vision! Sometimes it'll wind up being something pretty different, but it still works anyway! Those are some of the best surprises!"

Luz was pretty sure Moana's dancing would look wonderful, as someone who did that as a hobby herself!

"Oh yeah, absolutely! Besides, I need to get some focus anyway. School will definitely help there."

"I guess that's a good way to look at it! Even if you can't get it to look exactly how you envisioned it, it doesn't mean it can't be good on its own."

She does have to remember that sometimes.

"Yeah. I mean, it's school, so it can be pretty boring." She shrugs. "But what can you do?"

"Exactly! And who knows, it might even turn out a bit better than you thought it would!"

That was the hope, anyway.

"School doesn't HAVE to be boring! I mean sure, some of it is, but it's also a way to prepare us to deal with this real-life stuff!"

Luz is doing her best to be positive about human school. Back home did not exactly get her excited for it.

"That's true. I guess you never know until you try."

Moana makes a so-so gesture with her hand. "Some of it, I guess." Then she laughs, gently elbowing Luz. "But really, how useful is calculus going to be in the everyday world?"
