[The video feeds starts a little out of focus - Bruno's still getting to grips with technology in general. There's some muttering before finally, it comes into focus with Bruno squinting at the screen close-up. ]

Did I get it? I think I got it!

[He pulls back with a grin- his rats are mingling in the background and the one nestled in his hair seems to be wearing a tiny little bee costume. He does not explain this. At any point. He waves at the camera, a little awkwardly.]

Okay, um- hi. I'm Bruno, for...people I haven't seen yet which is most people because...I'm not great with the people thing. But! I have this...gift from home? I can see the future- which is way less fun than it sounds, trust me. Anyhoo, I decided to try and see into the future of this place a little? Mostly to see if I can get me and my sobrina out of here- full offence - don't wanna stay here. Didn't see that, but I DID see this!

[He picks up a green, glass slate, which he turns to them. On it is a very crude image:

He turns to look at it, grimacing a little.]

Honestly? They usually look better than this. Like, they don't normally look like a five-year-old drew them. And I couldn't see the vision very clearly anyway, so I think something's wrong with my gift? Weird. I saw this rodent that was shooting lightning and a net being thrown at it. They're not my rodents, FYI- they can't shoot lightning. [He snort-laughs like that's the funniest thing ever.] Like, what are they? My sister? Hah.

[He lifts the plate up again, so people can see the...really ugly picture.]

Soooooo if weird lightning rodents and nets mean anything to anyone? This might be yours? Our ours? Who knows!

[ zeke ends up pulling the most serious face he could manage— for only about five seconds. it all crumbles and he’s chuckling while adjusting his glasses. ]

It’s the beard that makes me look villainous, isn’t it?

[Okay, that gets a genuine laugh out of him, congrats, Zeke, you're the winner.]

It definitely gives off a vibe. Maybe get yourself a swishy cloak and a top hat, work on your maniacal laugh and you'll have it to a fine art.

[ don’t mind him, now he’s just going to twirl the tips of his whiskers up to look extra dapper. ]

I didn’t know top hats were in this season— I’ll keep it in mind for Halloween and start working on my nefarious monologuing.

[ most would know that ezekiel was a bit of a clown if you gave him the right juice. he’s drinking it all up. ]

[That's honestly as dapper as a person can get! Wow!!]

There you go! You've got plenty of time to get it perfected. You'll fool everyone!

[Bruno might be a socially awkward shut-in, but he's always had a soft spot for ACTING!]

[ okay. he actually smiles! but the smile fades. he takes a while to come back to this, and it’s made slightly more awkward by the fact that he’s on video. ezekiel looks faraway for a moment to three, a little speechless before he cups his head and doesn’t know what to think. ]

Ah, [ he tries to talk, closes his mouth, and then motions an apology, the hold on his phone, thus the view, becoming skewed. ] excuse me.

[ he’s remembered an actual monologue. his voice, him speaking, heated and throwing crushed debris at soldiers charging at him with their horses. ah . . . poor things, going from angry to fun and then angry again, pitying—

it’s all so, so repulsive. ]

Who’s memories are these—?

[Oh, well. That's a worrying segue. Bruno's used to the whole...zoning out thing, it's what happens to him when his visions come without warning and it's the worst possible feeling in the world. And as such, his smile fades, replaces with quiet, gentle concern. ]

I don't know.

[An honest answer, at least.]

...Did they feel familiar? Like...is that a thing this place does, too? Steal memories?

I don’t recall that. [ he shakes his head, ] Kaisou has been a supernatural hub for as long as I could remember. But, memory implantation?

[ it sounds like something the government would try. maybe libra? anxiety begins to run a little high, or grows, and zeke feels the need to prop his phone up on a table and reach for a cigarette pack right next to a clean glass ash tray, that he lifts and places in front of him. his lighter is in his front pocket, reaching around for that with two fingers. ]

That couldn’t have been me, I can assure that. But— it was an experience. [ one cigarette between his lips, cupping the lighter beneath the tip— once the bud ignites with color, he takes a deep drag, holds it in, and breathes out smoke seamlessly as he speaks. ] Like VR, if it were improved.

Maybe it's branching out?

[He laughs, nervous and awkward, this is very much out of his ballpark. He drums his knuckles on his wooden table out of anxious habit, trying to ease the worry nipping at his mind. Does this mean they all have missing memories? Or...or that they all will face having memories dropped in their head that aren't their own? It's an unsettling thought. ]

Um. I'm not sure what that is- so it's...like a fake memory? Just...put in your head?

. . . I don’t know. [ it’s confusing and he wishes he could definitely say it was fake news, but— ] It almost seemed too real to be fake. Maybe it was real somewhere.

[ Alternate timelines, a being trying to communicate? mutter, mutter. he could remember sounds, smells, which freaks him out, but it’s possible? everything is possible when you bring up anything supernatural or, sci-fi. wasn’t the whole plot of the new blade runner about something like this? real memories that just aren’t yours? zeke takes another drag from between his fingers and huffs like a chimney. ]

VR, [ he wants to at least be considerate, ] is Virtual Reality. Users can immerse themselves in a fabricated environment by computer tech instead of looking at a screen, like you are now. Makes everything look completely real.

It's nothing I've really dealt with before. My remit is uh...the future, not the past? Or...someone's past?

[Misplaced memories. It sounds messy and confusing. Bruno kind of spaces out because he really only understood about half of that- but the last part he DOES get, he's just gonna...smile and nod. It's fine. ]

Oh...so- like making things...not real look real? Like you're actually there?

That’s right. A lot of people have fun with it. Perfect way to waste time.

[ — if you ask him. he prefers the real thing, and handheld games. for now. he uses the butt of his cigarette to point in thought. ]

If you go to the mall sometime, you could probably see one . . .

[He is going to do this and he's going to regret so much.]

Huh. And it's...safe, to use? Because the way you just described it made it sound kinda terrifying.

[ monke here for chaos. at that, zeke gives a deep chuckle that scrapes his throat and nearly makes him cough. ]

Oh, definitely. They strap you in and make sure you're safe. Maybe what I just saw was terrifying, but the mall experience is smooth sailing— [ point! ] especially when part of you knows it isn't real.

[ spoiler: your brain tricks you, but he won't spoil it. not this. ]

Do you like roller coasters?

[There will be so much chaos. Worry starts to seep in because what the heck?]

Wait- what? Strap you in? Like...why? Why would I need that to be safe?

[Just. The blankest of looks.]

I have never been on one. Those are those carts on rails? Right?

[ hohoh, why does he need to be strapped in, he asks . . . ]

It’s all part of setting the mood for the experience. And it’ll be an experience. Maybe a preparation for the real thing.

[ at least the topic (and his smoking) has calmed him down significantly. he shouldn’t think too much about what he saw. ]

[He already has so many regrets. So very many. ]

...hmmmm.

[He feels like he should be worried about this. He licks his lips nervously.]

I don't know about that. I don't really...uh, do experiences.

[ okay, maybe he shouldn’t smile— but he is, and at the very least hold in his chuckle. ]

I’m sorry, you don’t— do experiences? [ he smells fear of trying new things is what he’s smelling. flicking some debris off the cigarette butt, he nearly burns his fingers on the ash tray and mutters: hot! ] Then how do you live? Isolated from society?

[He appreciates that, you're a good guy. His eye drops to Zeke's nearly burned fingers, then back at the man himself, chuckling nervously. ]

Something...like that. Our um- home is an encato. It's protected from the outside world with these really tall mountains. Or...was. There's kinda a hole in them now.

[That's probably something to be worried about hmm. He picks a little at the surface of the table.]

I lived in the walls for our house for the last ten years. By myself- well, myself and my rats. It's- it's complicated. I don't do that anymore but...yeah.

. . . Oh.

[ the teasing is gone immediately. he didn’t think it was actually, you know, possible! to do that this day and age, but ezekiel has a hard time remembering that people from other dimensions are just dropping out of the sky and homes are very different. at least, he looks apologetic. ]

I’m sorry about that. [ at least the rats, from what he’s seeing and hearing, are good rats. ] At least your rats seem like good companions.

It's...fine.

[It's absolutely not fine, and the fact he looks so miserable and upset about it makes that very clear. It's the opposite of fine.

He manages a chuckle anyway.]

Hah, yeah. Those little guys kept me company. Don't know what I would have done without them.

[ bruno he sees you . . . . . but he won’t question a man he’s only just met. instead: ]

They feel the same way, I’m sure. [ while he’s at it!! he puts the cigarette out, now. ] About that VR experience . . . I can accompany you sometime. What do you think?

[Thanks, Buddy, he appreciates that. Dig into his horrific mental health issues at a later date. You gotta be prepared for that journey. ]

Oh um...okay? Sure. That would be- [sorry, Zeke, he's not used to people actually wanting to spend time with him] nice. Gracias. I...appreciate that.

[ it reminds him of the select few students in class who are loners. he’s got to help out, somehow. so, clearing his smoker throat one last time, out comes a deep: ]

I may need to work on some of my pronunciation, but I think I pulled that off. Did I even mention my name—? [ he doesn’t remember such! ] It’s Ezekiel. You can just call me Zeke.

I don’t mind repeats. It usually takes me a couple of tries to fixate.
