i / labyrinth arrival;
( when he comes to, it's — he's pretty sure there's nothing but sand surrounding him, but it's only the first thing he sees when he first opens his eyes, and there's nothing else as far as the eye can see when he twists his gaze this way and that. great. he's no stranger to the desert by any stretch of the imagination, but he generally doesn't go very far from the orphanage, because what is he going to do if miss melanie needs him to take care of one of the younger kids —
he doesn't think that's going to be much of a problem here, or at the very least it doesn't feel like it, but. it's still there, in the back of his mind, just on the off-chance it crops up and he finds himself back within the reach of the orphanage. of the call of nicholas! —
he walks. and he walks and he walks and he walks, and eventually. eventually he'll make his way out. how long it takes is anyone's guess, but. he made it, and that's something, right? )

( well. once he's made it out of the labyrinth he has access to something he wouldn't have paid attention to otherwise, but.
he manages to get the video option up and looking in his general direction, and he looks a bit grumpy as the camera pans around the church in the background. )
What is going on here!?

[Eve is just a kiddo who lives there. Observant, but nowhere close to the eyes and ears of a Plant.]
The reason? Someone tore the Spirit Vein while trying to return to a world that no longer exists.
So now people like us fall through.
[What a neutral tone for an explanation that sounds so out there.]
['Expected to do something?' She ponders, silently sizing up the other kid. He can't be much older that her. So...]
No. There will be opportunities to help in the city and Spirit Realm, if you wish. But it is not required.
People might expect you to go to school though.

also … her explanation is more than what wolfwood sr. had given him, so he's just going to. take that and mull it over for a second, forgive the stretch of quiet in the interim. )
Well that sounds dumb. ( thank you, nicholas. what if they didn't know the world they were trying to return to no longer existed? did you think of that?
( no, but. in his defense, he's ten years old and tends to take some things at surface-value. he'll get over that pretty quickly, though.
he slumps a little bit at the admission that he isn't expected to do anything; that isn't how he knows how to do things? something is always expected of him, whether he wants that to be true or not. whether it's helping miss melanie out with the chores or the younger children at the orphanage, he can't very well say that he ever has a whole lot of time to himself.
but that addendum — ) School? ( he perks up, just a little. don't even worry about it. ) Because I'm young? ( look. regular school is going to be a hell of a lot different from the sermons he's been made to sit through so far. color him intrigued. )

[His reactions earns the barest glimpse of affront on Eve's face. Is he doubting her or insulting Willow?]
But that is what happened. You can ask others on the app.
[Ah, she is older then him at twelve years. But just barely.]
[Eleven of those years spent in conditions not unlike what Nicolas would go through... makes her a tad odd at times. Childhood experiences are new, but sometimes (more and more these days) the kid in her still shines through.]
Yes. School is compulsory for children within a certain age in this country. [Pulling out the big words now. Defending her dignity.] We don't have to since we're not from around here, but you can if you want. Others will likely recommend it.

he's not doubting or insulting anyone; he's just very opinionated for a boy of ten years and he's never bothered seeing what it's like to keep his mouth shut sometimes. ) I believe ya. ( he says it like it's not a big deal, and it isn't, not really.
it's difficult, sometimes, to think about what it means to be able to act like a kid when he'd had no choice but to grow up as quickly as possible in order to help out with all the younger kids at the orphanage; maybe they're both going to end up being a little bit weird about it, but that's part of the adventure of being a kid in the first place. or something like that.
vash would probably say something like that, but it's not like nicholas knows him well enough to say as much yet.
he's quiet for a second as he thinks about the prospect of school. of an actual education — he knows how to read and write, of course, but the thought of learning about things that are entirely new to him are going to effectively slap him right upside the head. he's going to like it a lot, but he'll never admit it. ) Don't have a whole lotta formal education where I'm from. ( he finally says thoughtfully that's like downright enthusiasm from him.. ) Nobody's gonna force me if I don't wanna go?

[So she got all defensive for nothing. Whoops.]
Well, good. [There's still a little stubbornness going, but Eve's voice has lost whatever indignation might have snuck in.]
[Isn't it thrilling? Isn't it terrifying. The weight of being a kid when you have little to no experience with the childhood books describe. Folks are doing their best to make sure Eve gets a second chance, but... sometimes (rarely but sometimes) it can be an unfortunate reminder of times long gone.]
No, they won't force you. I didn't go to school for about a year after I arrived. [Then Kni was enrolled, and Eve joined in solidarity.] School is alright. It does take up most of the day, but there are breaks and many subjects to learn. [...Yay?]

it's been said elsewhere that this one is going to be ensured a chance at an actual childhood, but even if he didn't, he definitely wouldn't know what he was missing out on in the first place; he's been taking care of others for as long as he can remember, helping out where he can and generally just. not being in the way, and he's been fine with it.
he's not going to know what he's supposed to do with things like school. and free time? and books that aren't strictly for learning purposes. even if he's probably going to end up liking school a whole lot more than someone else we know.
kni.he's quiet for a second, thoughtful. all he really knows within the realm of education are the sermons given by the eye of michael, and that can't be the same thing as school, right? ) What kinda stuff d'you get to learn? ( is he curious? yes. is he trying to hide it? also yes. )

[She's not sure how she feels about being treated like a kid... but the parts of childhood Eve has been introduced to thus far, they've been nice.]
[Don't worry, Nicolas. You already have a huge leg up over Kni in terms of school: knowing how to get along with other kids.]
There's science, math, history... Reading and writing...
What we learn specifically depends on the day.
We even have occasional classes about creative skills and physical activity. Yesterday I finished an art project the teacher assigned.
[The public school has a general lack of sermons. Which is good. Big Wolfwood would have had a bone to pick at parent-teacher night if they did.]
