Un: Zodiac | Mid-Month Update

WHO: Everyone!
WHERE: Libra App
WHEN: December 15th
WHAT: Zodiac Network Post
WARNINGS: None!

[We've reached the middle of December. The Christmas Movies are well underway in their production, and the holiday spirit is everywhere in the air. The masquerade ball is this weekend, so this is your chance to get ready for that. The post begins like the previous one had, with notifications of peoples coming and goings]

Akira has left the app.

[The post then continues on as normal.]

Hello. Thank you for using the Libra App.

Another year and I'm yet again left to do work while everyone else is off on the company Christmas party.

I'm supposed to remind you guys that there's ten days left until Christmas, and that you should probably get on any Secret Santa gifts you got assigned. If it's like the in-office one, you'll probably get cursed if you don't do it. Harold's never been the same after he forgot Pam from Legal's present.

Also don't forget the masquerade this weekend. If you got an outfit, make sure to send us a copy of the receipt and we'll reimburse you for up to $1000. If your outfit costs more than that, well, considering that's bigger than my entire Christmas bonus, I don't know what to tell you.

Oh, and finally accounting wanted to let you guys know that Zodiac is taking no responsibility in any injuries you may get from picking a fight with Santa Claus. I hate that's a sentence I actually had to write, but I guess I can't really be that surprised.

I'm done. Happy Holidays.

This post is sponsored by Hugtopia Knit Goods. This season, get a knitted sweater that'll feel like a warm hug.

[ Users will have the option to choose their own display names and user pics if they haven't already. If nothing is chosen, the app will use their real name and a quick photo taken of them from their camera's phone. Like always, there'll be no responses from Zodiac. And as always, feel free to keep backtagging the event logs! ]

I was born in Swansea and then moved to Bristol when I was young. I’ve been in the Caribbean for a few years now, though.

[Well that sounds normal enough—]

That said, before I got here, the year was 1721. When I say chocolates weren’t common in my day, I mean that they were so rare men would kill for them.

Welcome to the city’s underside, then. How’d you stumble on the app?

the year

you what

... She may need a moment.
jackdawvision: (oh there's a river)

[personal profile] jackdawvision 2023-12-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It was 1721.

The floating museum in port right now being repaired? The one flying a black flag? That’s my ship and she’s not actually a museum.

You aren't kidding, are you.
jackdawvision: (this tightrope; and i'm)

Aye, lass, every word I’ve written is nothing but God’s own truth.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised anymore, but still.

Anyway, I just found the app on my phone one morning.

I'm still not convinced it isn't malware.

At least you knew what a phone was. I thought it was some sort of glass brick.

What’s malware?

[personal profile] thewarriorqueen 2023-12-26 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well ones that don't work sometimes get called bricked so you were close.

Malware is apps or other programs designed to do bad things to the device they're on, like making it stop working, or spying on what the person who owns it uses it for.

Ah, so it's a program that sneaks onto the device and sabotages its workings for its maker's benefit. I'm quite familiar with the concept, just not how it's applied to this sort of technology.

It can spy on people? Like a miniature observatory?

[personal profile] thewarriorqueen 2024-01-01 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. What it does and how bad it is depends on the malware, some just make things run slowly, others can pretty much just ruin the device they're on.

Usually programs like that spy on people by recording information. Stuff like what websites you visit, what email accounts you access, sometimes even logging the passwords you use. There's always rumors of stuff that can hack the camera to take recordings too but I don't know if that's just urban legend. You'd need to talk to someone who actually knows tech stuff for that.
