WHAT: An early party for Danny's seventeenth birthday! He's setting up video games and terrible monster movies, but its mainly an excuse for teens to hang out and have some fun.
WARNINGS: Its Danny, so puns?

Danny had been looking forward to this for a while. He'd never done too much for this birthday before, with it being so close to Christmas. But this year he'd jumped at the chance to invite all of his friend over to hang out. 

In the living room he has set up his gaming system with some of his favorite multi-player games. He has some others set to the side for later, if anyone wants to try them out. In a different room he has a tv set up with a ghost movie ready to start playing. The only thing worse than the special effects is the plot and the acting.

Out in the kitchen Danny has set up a table with a big selection of sodas and snack foods. He knows that a lot of his friends come from other worlds, so Danny was determined that they would get a chance for the full junk food experience. Mysteriously, a strange and rather sketchy soda machine is sitting in the corner of the kitchen. Do you dare to risk it?

In the kitchen there is also a table for presents and the cake, which is a big store-bought chocolate cake with constellations iced on it.

Any anyone visiting is running the chance of being bowled over by an extremely enthusiastic labradoodle, the newest arrival at Danny's house.

Despite having to deal with the loss of her mother and uncle just a few weeks apart, Isabela is trying her best not to let Julieta and Bruno’s absence bummed her out more, which is easier said than done. Upon arriving at Danny’s place, she might be feeling out of place, being possible one of the few adults to show up.

As she walks into the kitchen, Isa is looking at the selections of snacks and drinks to choose from and she would have gone for the chips and bottled iced tea right ahead if it weren’t for her looking at the not-at-all suspicious soda vending machine for a few minutes. Does she really wants to try her luck with that?

Danny spots her in the kitchen as he comes by to restock his plate.

"Hey Isa! Thanks for coming!" He sees her eyeing the machine and gives her a sheepish grin. "Would you believe that that just kind of showed up here a few days ago? I haven't been brave enough to try all of it yet."

“Oh, hi Danny. Happy Early Birthday to you,” she greets him as soon as she hears him.

“Erm, I haven’t seen this kind of vending machine before but maybe I could try to see how it works compared to the other vending machines I have encountered so far. Do I need to put a coin into it first before pressing a button?”

"Well, you can if you want? But the coin part seems to be broken. Its been working without that."

There was no way Moana was missing a chance to hang out with her friends, especially getting to celebrate Danny's birthday. So of course she shows up, though is a bit later than she would have liked. Mostly because it had taken her a while to bundle up, because she is cold and it's getting more difficult for her to function the more the temperature drops.

But she makes it anyway, and after shedding her several outer layers of clothes she places the two gifts she'd gotten for Danny on the table in the kitchen while looking out for the birthday boy himself.

"Moana!" Danny comes running into the room with a big grin on his face. He is followed by a big shaggy black dog that skids slightly on the kitchen tiles as it enters. It barks happily.

"I'm so glad you could make it!"

Seeing Danny gets a grin of her own. "Of course! No way I was missing this."

She knows that this time of year is a bit of a sore spot for him, and he hadn't really wanted to celebrate his birthday before. So she was glad to be doing something for him now.

Her expression brightens a bit more at the sight of the dog, and she reaches down to pet him. "Well, hi there! Who's this handsome boy?"

"He just showed up yesterday. I had to do some fast talking, but my parents are letting me keep him." As long as he took all the responsibility for taking care of him, of course. "I named him Spooky."

Upon arriving Fern headed over to the kitchen to drop off his gifts, a dozen homemade chocolate cupcake decorated to look like Danny (Dannycakes, sorry bro), and a vintage Space Invaders game. He figures the cupcakes will go over pretty well, because even though he's made of grass he still has all of Finn's baking memories, which means he's half-decent at it. The game just looked cool, had a space theme, and reminded him strongly of BMO and NEPTR, and who wouldn't want a game console that's reminiscent of the best brothers ever? No one, that's who.

Of course, when he sees the soda machine he immediately goes for it, not even thinking twice about grabbing a soda. Bring from the post-apocalypse and all, the sketchy names fly straight over his head, and it's only when he's opened a can of Conke does he pause.

"Wait - can plants drink soda?"

Okay, Danny needed to get a picture of those cupcakes before they disappeared. More so if they happened to have that joke written on them.

"No idea?" he says as he snaps the picture with his phone. "Soda's liquid, so maybe? But also who knows what else in in that."

The colors were definitely a little scary. Not that that had stopped Danny from trying one.... and instantly regretting it.

Sadly no jokes on them, just Fern's best approximation of Danny's face in frosting.

Fern looks thoughtfully down at the can of soda. "Sugar, and... uh...." Now that he's thinking about it, he has no idea what goes into soda. Sugar, the same stuff that's used to make candy? It's basically liquid candy, right?

Can plants eat candy? When he was Fun he just poured root beer all over himself instead of drinking it....

He lowers the can a little. "Knowing my luck it's probably a bunch of junk toxic to plants," he says, making a face. "This sucks."

Okay, that was a massive drawback to life as a plant.

Danny makes a face. "That's completely unfair. But there has to be some way around it. I refuse to believe that no one has ever thought of inventing junk food for plants."

Sketchy soda machine? Not to Luca, who never saw a soda machine in his life before coming to Kaisou. He'd been wowed by the cake and all the stars, but he's soon distracted by seeing a whole soda machine in the house.

"Wow, I've seen these in the stores here, but I didn't know you could get one in your house! And I've never seen these kind of soda before!"

Were they new flavors? Did they taste different? Did you still have to put money in when it's a house soda machine?

"Neither did I! It just kind of showed up there the other day."

Which was going to be fun to explain to his parents when they came back from their business trip.

"Honestly, I've never seen any of these soda brands anywhere else. They're kind of weird."

"Huh. Have you tried them?"

He was already curious about what they'd taste like, but that curiosity only grows when he knows that they're mystery sodas.

"A few!" Danny makes a face. "They were all pretty bad."

Luz drops off her aforementioned gifts and while she does try to give people a bit of a greeting, she does feel slightly down. Hunter is gone, and as she never got to resolve everything that happened to them since going into Bellos' mind, it leaves a hole that she can't quite explain to anyone yet.

So like any hot blooded preteen, she drowns her conflicting feelings in video games. There is Luz is the corner, playing some puzzles games against cute chibi sprites, which are slowly starting to lift her mood a bit!

Danny throws himself onto the couch next to her.

"Hey Luz, how's it been going?"

It had been a while since they talked, so he'd been a little worried. Beside him, Danny's new dog leans against his leg and stares up at him until he stares scratching him behind the ear.

Oh, hey birthday boy!

"Danny, hi! Happy birthday! Oh, just playing some of these games! They're kinda fun!"

"Luz's eyes trailed down to the dog and her mood immediately changed.

"AWW, LOOK AT THE PUPPERS! SO CUTE!"

Movies

After dropping off his gift to Danny in the kitchen, Varian heads off to watch the movie. He pauses at the Bepsi machine first, squinting at the options. One of the downsides of being from the early 19th century is that he genuinely doesn't know there's anything off about these flavours. He eventually settles for some benis and immediately regrets it.

"Oh yeah, that's...bad."

After that disaster, he sits to watch the movie, absently petting Danny's new dog as he settles in. He's never seen this one, but he's never seen like...95% of all movies. He can't his head as he watches a woman screaming at a bat on a very visible wire.

"So, why is she going to the haunted house in the first place? That seems like a poor life choice already."

Danny leans back on the couch next to him with a grin. He'd seen this before of course, but it was always fun introducing new people to the horror of bad movies.

"See, that's the point. No one in these movies make good life choices. If they did there wouldn't be a plot."

He cracks open a can of.... well the label looked like it said End Me. So of course he had to try it. He inspects the open can speculatively as he tries to decide whether to risk it.

"So...these movies are based on people doing things that no rational person ever would? Isn't- isn't that infuriating? Because it feels kinda infuriating."

Varian doesn't take fools gladly at the best of times and this whole thing makes him want to reach into the screen and shake the idiot characters doing stupid things. He turns to eyeball the can.

"I wouldn't. I'm not sure what's in those things but I'm not convinced it's anything actually potable."
