[Bruno is sitting in a large cavernous room with a sandpit in the middle. It's not the fun kind of sandpit though and Bruno is definitely not having a good time. He looks more stressed than usual as he turns the feed on.]

Okay, so I thought I'd give this looking into the future of this place thing one more shot. Just- just to see if I could see if anything...awful was coming. Or maybe if there was an exit to this unending nightmare? You know how it is. Anyway, the answer to that is absolutely not.

[He raises his little glass vision plate to the screen, just as poor quality as it was last month. He jabs a single finger at it in a panicked motion.]

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, can I please draw your attention to the DECAPITATED HUMAN HEAD?!!! Okay there's also some...fish with glasses and kind of a cane here too and I don't know what that's about, but what I really think we should be focussing on here is the DeCApItAtEd HuMAn hEad.

[He drops the plate, raising his hands.]

Anyway, I'm done. I am super done with literally everything. I'm just gonna go back to living in the walls where I didn't have to worry about any, and I really can't stress this enough, decapitatted human heads.

[It's great. It's a fun time just lying in the sand, waiting for oblivion to take them. It's a swell time. He still has a lingering ache in the back of his skull from the vision and not moving in the dark seems like the best thing he can do ever.]

You started going to school yet?

[Worth a shot. The offer's always on the table. She seems content enough to just lie on the ground - it's not comfortable by any means, but a small price to pay to get to spend a little quiet time with her uncle.]

Well... I haven't yet, but I think I'm going to. Zodiac's been pretty insistent on it.

[Not that she trusts Zodiac, but...]

I think... I'd like going?

[She is a Very Good Niece. ]

It might be nice for you? Being able to spend some time with kids your own age who aren't...directly related to you? You can make some friends.

[Because he knows she never really had many back home- that was clear. Maybe she can make some just for herself here. She deserves that much. ]

[She more or less made friends with some of the very young village kids, but never really anyone her own age. Making friends when you're a Madrigal - even a Giftless one - was complicated and kind of hard.]

Did you know the school Zodiac wants me to go to has clubs? Like an art club! And a robotics club - I don't know what that is but it sounds cool?

[There was always a distance there- Madrigals were to be revered. Or feared. Or in his case, downright loathed. Connecting with others was...tricky. He's having much the same issue here. He's desperately out of practice, and he wasn't good at connecting with people to begin with. ]

Huh. That's... yeah that sounds cool. And that sounds like a good way to find kids who have the same...uh interests as you? Like maybe not robotics whatever that is but definitely art! You could show off your stuff.

[That's the thing, isn't it? Maybe she had an easier time than the rest of them connecting to the rest of the town because she was the "not special" one, but there was still a distance there that she couldn't really understand.]

I wouldn't mind trying out an art club. I used to draw when I was younger, but it'd be fun to try like... painting?

[She expresses "art" through sewing mostly. Surely a canvas can't be all that different.]

It'd be nice to make some friends here. I guess I wasn't the best at making friends back home... unless they were under the age of 10. And also Antonio.

Sure! And maybe there'll be something for uh...sewing? Maybe.

[There have to be CLUBS for that, right? Is that a Cool Kid thing? ]

Antonio definitely counts, but hah, yeah. It'd be nice for you to have friends your own age.

Yeah, I could do that too. I think there was a club for sewing? But I kind of like the art club...

[She has her eyes on that art club. Something new! Sort of. She could do what she used to do when she was younger - make little drawings of the family. Only maybe better? She's out of practice. She stopped drawing around the same time she didn't get her Gift.

Suddenly, Mirabel remembers the food she packed and sits up. She opens the small container she brought up with her, filled with empanadas. Thanks, mamá. She shoves one in her mouth, and offers the container to Bruno.]

What about you? I mean, not school - I mean hobbies? I know there's Ratas y noches apasionadas, but...

Well, go for the art club. Do whatever make you happy, you might as well, right?

[Bruno shifts his head at the sound of her rummaging around, when she offers up an empeanada, he reaches in to take it, before moving back to stare at the ceiling. He chews on it thoughtfully before answering.]

I dunno. I thnk I'm...uh, still just in the getting used to being around people again stage.

There's some hobbies that involve minimal people-ing.

I mean, you're good at writing - you could explore that as a hobby? Like write books or something. If you wanted.

[Hrm, that's something he's never considered before. He hums thoughtfully. ]

You know...maybe? I could get my stories out there without...talking to anyone.

You could! You could write about whatever you wanted too! All you'd need is a quiet place... no people required.

Well, I happen to know where to find all the quiet places.

[It's a life skill. Or...you know. A sign of his cripplingly poor mental health. One or the other.]

But yeah, you're right. It's...well, it's worth a shot.

Yeah, it is. You should do it. I think you'd be really great at it.
