They did, yes. I don't find that logic holds well, if it's any comfort to you. There's no way to prove that's the case, so it's a wild assumption right from the start. And I find it much more likely that one would return by the same path they traveled to arrive in the first place.

Honestly, it was cruel of them to make such a baseless statement in the first place. It's far more likely she's perfectly safe.
