So this place is...something, I'll say that much. I wasn't expecting to run headlong into giant reptiles, that much is certain.

Um, I'm Mal. Mal Durrish. If anybody here is from my universe, you'll know what I say when I mention I'm a Jedi Knight. For those of you not from there...it really just means I'm here to help.

I'm not sure what people do here or what they need, so...I'd appreciate knowing.

That or, well, bad luck. In this world, it kind of depends? Sometimes you don't need magic to make a mess of things, there's plenty of other regular things to worry about.

Wait, you did know about the magical stuff, right?

If you mean 'is this your card?' or keeping an eye on your wallet to make sure somebody isn't taking it? Yes.

If you're talking 'magic is real'...

What you're talking about is sleight of hand magic, with optical illusion and trickery and all of that.

Which is hard stuff, and super impressive, don't get me wrong!

But no. I'm talking about magic being real and being a thing that can happen here. As in sometimes a realm will open and we wind up exploring someplace completely new, and that said magical stuff is the reason some of us are here now.

When I first arrived, I had to go through some crazy labyrinth, and that happened with a few other people too.

Yeah - that was a really fun thing to stumble into. Can't say I recommend it.

If my lightsaber was working, non-zero chance I might have solved that particular problem a bit...directly. Labyrinth would've had a lot of holes in it.

[She rubbed the back of her neck, slowly.]

It's just all...a bit crazy, you know? Pulled out of my universe, powers absolutely karked... [she finished, slipping into Huttese easily in the moment.]

[Aaand only belatedly realizing it's not the best Jedi move to swear in front of a teenager. Great job, Mal.]

Oh yeah, that happened to me too! Labyrinth, powered down, just brought here from one of the worst days of my life. It was pretty brutal.

I'll say that at least there's a little bit of a cooling off period. Also, that there'll probably be less kids pretty soon there. School starts again soon.

Honestly most of the time we hang around and live our lives until the next gate shows up and then we deal with that. Rinse, lather, repeat.

It's not always that bad though. So... y'know, bonus? Some people get jobs? To fill in the gaps.

Oh. That's...like, what sort of jobs, because I don't exactly have a...conventional resume.

Ft, me either, trust me. [Neither "seer" nor "living in the walls" really prepares someone for work.]

I do the bookkeeping at my sister's restaurant. Most of the people who are on this app are pretty relaxed about the whole...lack of a conventional resume thing. And the people who aren't usually ignore all the weirdness so you'll be fine either way.

I think it's more like...they really, really, really don't want to believe they can't see it so they just...convince themselves it's something mundane? It's pretty weird.

Weirdly enough that's the first thing anybody has said that really makes sense to me. People convince themselves of stuff all the time, why would this be any different?

Best that, like, three quarters of my own abilities just...aren't working, I guess. Leaping twenty feet in the air wouldn't go over well, or getting glimpses of peoples' futures. I mean, if I get them back I suppose I could set up as a con artist really fast, if I were unethical.

[It's said jokingly, but she knows how easy it is. She'd picked enough pockets to feed herself when a child to figure that out.]

You can see futures? Because we uh- have a club for that. Well. It's less a club and more us hanging around talking about the horrible things we see at the end of the month, but...y'know! Club. Kinda.

Ugh, sort of? You get...glimpses of things that are going to happen, when you're a Jedi? Usually to people you know, so, like, future perils and all that fun stuff. It only happens when I'm dreaming, so far, and I can't control it for bantha poodoo.

[Grow up on Nar Shaddaa, and the ol' Huttese slang never quite leaves, really.]

But, you know, the future is a moving target and it doesn't give you any indication of what you should and shouldn't do, so...

[She stops, closing her eyes for a second.]

Sorry, it's just that I get to use all these abilities to help people, but then there's this one. Which I kinda wish I didn't have, and right now am kinda thankful is broken.

Ohhhh, yeah. I can control mine most of the time, but sometimes it just...happens. Gotta really focus on it if I want to see something specific though. And yes! Yes exactly, the moving target thing. Why do people not get that!

The future thing is my Gift from home and it sucks. The new ones I got from here are pretty nice though? Less...stress-inducing.

Oh yeah, that's what we call them. Gifts. That's...that's what Mamá always calls them so...it kinda stuck. Because they're literally Gifts, y'know?

[She nods, that all making sense to her. Even if it's a population of billions, only one family having the Gifts also kind of makes sense - that's probably the percentage of a population of any world that would produce Jedi, really.]

Makes sense. Well, all of it, really. That's...sort of how it works where I'm form. Well, I mean, Force-sensitivity can run in families, just...very rarely. Once per planet? Sounds about right.
