so how do you know if something new and magical you can do is bc you gained a power or if it's bc an item you have is magical?
like how can you tell the difference???
um this isn't a power I can really test a lot btw so that method isn't really good for this...

What is the ability?

[Okay, he'll switch to voice since it seems rude not to. His voice is sort of shaky though.]

[He's having trouble wording this so he has to just come out and say it straightforward.]

I died and came back? Immediately after. I know people said people died in May and came back but I don't know if this is the same thing...

You--you died, and then seconds later you came back to life? Or did you die and wake up a short time later?

I... Think it was seconds? I'm not totally sure. The person who found me didn't see me die, only come back to life. But it couldn't have been longer than a couple minutes at most!

Those who died earlier this year took a week or so to come back, so I don't think it was that...but at the same time, I am not at all inclined to look a gift chocobo in the mouth. What makes you wonder if it was because of an item?

Because I found something last month I'd been meaning to ask about, and I think it lets me make these light ball things but only if it's on me? But that's because I could test that! But I can't really test dying because if it is the phone thing then I'm just... dead...

Yes, that would be...well. I think it would be wisest to simply keep whatever it is you think might have saved you on you any time you might possibly be in extreme danger. Either that is what saved you or it isn't, but I fail to see a problem with keeping it on you either way.

Yeah, that's true...

I wonder how often it works, too, because with my other power it seems like I have to almost like... Recharge before I use it again? Kinda like a cooldown period in a video game.

[He plays video games a lot okay, this is his best frame of reference.]

But with mirroring your speech like I did with you I haven't found that it needs to recharge like that?

Perhaps it's because the latter is a much simpler power? It takes hardly any energy at all to mimic something like you did, or at least significantly less than coming back to live in moments might.

That would make sense... I wish there was a way I could know without having to test it. Because maybe I could use it to help people... If I knew how often I could use it...

[He sounds contemplative. And, yeah, he's still... Talking about dying. But also coming back to life!]

[Rhel gasps, and then laughs a little. It's...a mostly sad laugh.]

It would protect people, but it would upset them more. I...well, as someone who has both been saved by someone putting themselves at great risk and being the one to do exactly that...trust me. It isn't a very good mindset to have.

[He's not really sure how to take her reaction. His own logic seems sound to him.]

But I'd be coming right back! Wouldn't it be better to put someone at risk you know is gonna get better than to put people who could actually die?

[Gently:]

It sounds like it would be, and it isn't a bad idea to have nor should you never try to help someone, but self-sacrifice is...well. It's just that. It's a sacrifice.

[And boy is Rhel still like. Dealing with realizing what that means herself. But Yoosung is younger and if she can help...]

[He's quiet for a moment as he thinks. Maybe she thinks he's not taking this seriously enough. But he has been through it once now, at least. It's not like he doesn't know what it can entail, right?]

I know... It wasn't like... Super pleasant. It was painful, and bloody, and scary... [A deep, shaky breath.] Terrifying, actually, because it was cold and dark and there was just... [His voice cracks:] nothing. But...

But I don't want anyone else to have to experience that either! You know? And there's not a lot that I can do, I couldn't do anything during all of that, but if I can do this...!

[A sniffle.]

I know. Trust me, I know. If I can handle it, why would I ever let anyone else risk it?

[Gods.]

But there is more you can do that doesn't involve dying. You're rather new to all of this, aren't you? You seemed surprised when you mimicked me.

Yeah... But that's not really helpful... And what if I can't do anything else? Like I know that I can do this now, so until other powers randomly show themselves like the mimicking thing did...

[He sighs. He doesn't know. He just hates this. Part of him wishes the Libra app had never shown up, but that wouldn't really have stopped things from happening to other people. He just would have remained ignorant about it. And he doesn't really like the idea of that either.]

[Saying "try to find ways to help without powers" would probably be hypocritical right now so...let's not.]

Well, you think it might be from a phone that you have, yes? Does the phone have anything else magical about it? And even if it doesn't, you could always ask someone to start to teach you magic.

[Probably a smart move.]

Um... It has this glowing stone in the bottom of it, and is surrounded by these empty nodes--

Wait, what, I can just learn magic? Just like that?

I think you can, yes, though I don't know how the magic here works. You might want to ask someone who does to be certain.

[He sends a few pictures of the flip-phone-like device, the front plate of it customized with this pattern, and the bottom inside of the phone containing a golden glowing quartz.]

...you know, I'm almost reminded of materia, looking at that orb. They're a magical sort of gem that can enhance one's abilities.

[Hm.]

Where did you get the phone and the orb?

Oh, the orb was already in the phone. And, um, this is gonna sound funny but... my cat showed up with it? Well, she wasn't my cat until then but now she stays with me! And she had a pearl necklace around her too!

I haven't seen any posters for lost pets or anything and the vet said she wasn't chipped... She just showed up in my apartment last month.

Well, stranger things have happened. Honestly I'm surprised that damned shoebill hasn't shown up here yet. But suffice it to say you didn't buy it? And there aren't any for sale anywhere?
