Why?

Are you building an army?

No, I want to study them! Or take them apart if they're really just gadgets and not, like, mechanical creatures with sentience? I have an Android friend back where I'm from, so I think that's always a possibility we should consider. But otherwise I could use their parts to build stuff!

I'm not sure if they have sentience. I don't think so.

But what will that lead to, you studying them? Are you trying to build something specific?

I've got a three headed one that I think might be planning my murder.

If you want it, lemme know when and where. Most I'd want is a soda or something.

Nothing specific, I just like to take stuff apart and see how it works, and see if I can put it back together again.

Well if it's with me I'd think you'll probably be safe from its clutches!

How long ago did you arrive here, or are you a native?

Yeah! Something like that, I think.

I've been here a few weeks? Less than a month, though.

I just met you like to see the inside of things and how they work!

Oh, ok. And you're fine with it so far?

I do, I like seeing what I can do with wires and fuses and stuff. I'm pretty good at it.

I miss my friends a lot. But at this point I guess I'm kind of used to just doing what I need to in order to survive in whatever place I find myself in. And I'm sure we'll be together again at some point. It seems like we always find our way back to each other.

Sounds fine to me. I can't fit this thing into a bag, so I'll be the guy with the Cerberus furby.

That's a pretty great gift! I wish I had that kind of a head, but I tend to dabble in other things.

That's a good attitude to have! If the world I came from wasn't in such a bad situation, I'd probably feel the same. What type of world do you come from?

[Five makes sure to message him a more specific time before she heads out to the mall. She's been here twice before already, on her own, not to meet anybody. She really enjoys the tech pawn shop. And has had to try and curb her instinct to pick pockets, if she's being honest. She may have already lost that battle twice anyway, if she's being even more honest. But a girl's gotta eat!!

While she waits for Roxas to show up, she hangs out in the open instead of any shop, so that he'll more easily be able to spot her. She'd sent an exact picture of what she's wearing so that should help, too. As, of course, does the fact that due to her hair and propensity for bright patterns she just sticks out anyway. (Funny, one might think that would make picking pockets more difficult, but so far that hasn't been her experience.)

To pass the time while waiting, she doodles in a sketchbook, sitting cross-legged on a bench. Her drawings are mostly in an anime sort of style, and they're good. Six different people feature prominently in them.]

Well, we all have different skill sets, I guess. What kinda stuff do you dabble in?

My Earth is kinda like this, but in the future. I'm from the 27th century. I was traveling in space on a ship called the Raza before I wound up here.

[To be fair, her future isn't such a wonderful place either, but she was happy as long as she was with the people she cares about, and could be helpful to them.]

I'm a human that learned how to do magic, actually! Have to get it back to its core strength, but I'm working at it, slowly!

Ooh, so you're an explorer then! I'm only at the twenty second century myself! What's that like?

[Roxas has no idea what kind of person he's dealing with, so he makes sure to keep a hand in his pocket, wrapped around his phone. True to his word, there's a monstrosity under his other arm. It could have fit in the empty backpack he has, but coming to the mall gave the blond an opportunity to pick up some supplies he's been meaning to get for a while.

The bright hair does indeed make Five stand out and has him heading right her way. He slows when he sees the artbook, stopping a couple of feet away, though he spies the drawing of six people.]

[The un was the only name he knows to go by. Proper introductions can happen after he confirms this is the furby wrangler.]

Magic? I guess maybe I shouldn't be surprised since they call things Spirit Gates and Spirit Realms around here, but I never thought magic existed... At least, before now.

[An explorer? Well... Not exactly... But how to explain to a stranger from another world all that's been going on in her own? Hmm ]

Well... We kind of explored some stuff...

[Does escaping prison count as exploring? Probably not...]

We've definitely got better technology. I'm not really sure yet all the ways this world, or time or whatever, differs from what I'm used to. It's also kind of complicated because a lot of my memories before a few months ago are hard for me to access.

I didn't either! I accidentally stumbled into another world to find that out!

[Luz had her OWN story to tell in that regard, but it certainly explained why being here wasn't exactly jarring, especially since the world she left was pretty much just like this].

Only kind of? I thought you said you were on a ship. Are you pretty much stuck on that shop and it's just really big?

Oh, I'm sure! You're from a few centuries later, after all!

Wait, what happened to make you lose your memories? Do you know?

[The fact that they're total strangers is the reason why Five chose a public place like the mall. She figured it would be a fairly safe place to meet, surrounded by other people. Still, she wouldn't blame him for keeping his hand on his phone like that anyway, if she knew he was.

When Five hears someone say the name of her home out loud, she looks up quickly and looks surprised, before she remembers that she used the Raza as part of her username on the Libra app. There's a very brief flash of disappointment, just because for a second there she thought maybe someone here knew of the Raza or her crew, her family. Then she offers Roxas a small, genuinely friendly smile as she stands up.]

Yeah! Just "Five" is fine. This is our murder-plotting friend, huh?

[She motions to the three-headed toy under his arm, head tilted a little as she examines it from their current distance apart.]

I think he'll be comfortable with me. I've got another one just like him now.

Well, I was on a ship. But we weren't really going out of our way to explore things, because most of the time we were being chased. So we spent a lot of time on the ship or getting supplies at space stations. Um, sometimes we took jobs for money.

Yeah, it was something I did by accident. What happened made all my friends lose their memories as well. They're in my head now, but I can't access them easily. [Like she said. Kinda complicated. But she doesn't mind patiently explaining.] Do you know what a stasis pod is?

You guys were being chased? That sounds both exciting and a little dangerous. Who was chasing you?

[She was curious about the type of jobs they had to do, but figured she was already asking a question, so she was going to back off that a moment].

Whoa. That sounds rough, though clearly that's not something you wanted.

I've seen enough science fiction that I can confidently say probably!

Well, a lot of different people. Mostly people who thought we had done things we didn't do, or who didn't like the things my friends did before their memories were lost.

A stasis pod is like a chamber you go into and fall asleep in and you can safely sleep there without having to eat or drink or any of that stuff, for a pretty long time. But the me from before my memory wipe had programmed like a computer virus in a rush to target some of the other people's memories while they were sleeping in the pods, because they were planning to do something bad and I wanted to stop them. I introduced it when we all went into stasis and it ended up taking everyone's memories. Um, and putting them in my head, like I said. I usually only see those memories when I sleep now.

So you were a band of misfits that probably managed to befriend each other and trust each other, right?

[She was guessing anyway. She had just met this person, after all, but it sounded like a familiar trope. Still, what was that about things here friends did before]?

That was just about what I guessed, honestly.

Whoa. That's a LOT. What happened to all the other people then, who had their memories taken?

Yeah, especially in the beginning we only really had each other. We didn't know who else we could trust without our memories.

Besides me, there were five other people in stasis when the virus was deployed. They lost their memories but they could still do things normally for the most part, they just didn't know how they knew how to do it. And Android was onboard the Raza too, but her memories got reset due to a system reset and not the stasis pod thing.

We named each other for the order we woke up from stasis in. And that's why my name is Five.
