It can, potentially. You know how most acoustic violins look similar to each other in shape and size? That's because that shape and size is what gives violins their distinct size. If anything is done that warps the wood, like water damage, it could wreck that sound.

Luckily my violin does have wood finish on most of it, so as long as I take care of it right away it should be ok. But I don't want to take any chances on it.
