Lv. 3 Shiny Sandwich

WHO: Sampo and Lycaon
WHERE: Kanto Region
WHEN: Late September
WHAT: Sampo brings Lycaon to Kanto to help him find a friend.
WARNINGS: A clown and a dog getting into trouble.

[ Supplies are a must. Kanto's a big place--it's best to bring some food and maybe even some bed rolls in case we get caught out in the wild for a day. Hope you aren't afraid of sleepin' under the stars.

Though, if we get lucky, you'll find a pal in the daylight hours and we'll be home before dinner. All depends on your luck, you know~?

Words Sampo had said to Lycaon as he shoved supplies into his invisible pocket closet. Ingredients for a quick dinner that can just be thrown together cold--plenty of water, a sizeable length of rope--some survival gear like extra thick-soled boots in case they end up climbing up anywhere high.

He's also shoving the Shiny Charm he got from Gil into his pocket; and extra water. Always, always extra water.

Travelling to the stable gate location was quick and easy--he'd been here dozens of times, both when he was on the run from TBO and now for work with PokeGo; Kanto really was like a second home to him. And maybe he liked visiting it from time to time--and that's why he doesn't mind; or even encourages others to visit. Normally he'd charge a fee too; but Lycaon isn't a ranom person he's making a profit of. Maybe he's something like a new friend. Something like that. ]

If we get attacked by wild Pokemon, the best thing to do is run; especially if they're a big fella'. Napkin here can use Shadow Sneak to fend off anything weaker, but he's not gonna' be able to fight off a bear or somethin'.

Lotta' weaker, smaller Pokemon are easy to befriend with food or snacks, though.

You got any mind in what kind'a critter ya wanna bring home?~

[Not to worry, contrary to what I may look like, I'm much hardier than I appear.

Words to reassure Sampo as Lycaon too, packed his necessary belongings. Like the man he was speaking to, he had prepared his own pocket closet with the necessities. But Lycaon liked having tangible materials on hand as well, so he's fitting his thigh with a satchel mostly with medical supplies, some jerky, and survival gear. The knife seemed unnecessary with his claws, though...

Oh, that's right, he was fitting the Fetters of Dromi in there too. Not for his sake, but for Sampo's.]

Understood. I am not looking to pick a fight with any of them either, and perhaps even diplomacy would be our best option. I can speak with them conversationally, at the very least.

[He taps his lips with his knuckle, remembering one that had stood out to him when he was speaking with POKEGO.]

The little purple bat Riku had...Noibat, he said? It's features stuck out to me.

Agreed. These Pokemon have the capability of communication, so the sooner they're understood, the less likely they will lash out in the only way that gets across to us. Violence is often when there are no better options.

[For animals and Pokemon, that is.

Lycaon looks at Napkin as it floats to and fro around Sampo, and he holds out his hand gently to see if it'll land on it.]

Do not worry, little one. We won't push you too hard.

[But Lycaon nods at Sampo at that explanation. It makes sense--bats tended to like caves...and where better for caves than a mountain?] I do not get tired in my legs like most people, so should you need me to give you a lift, I would be happy to provide.

[Listen, we all know rats have the biggest gossip, so if you're going to talk to anyone, they would be a good start. Raccoons as well.

It would be somewhat of an issue carrying Sampo like that, true...He was approximately Hugo-sized, but bulkier in frame. Not impossible, but not very efficient.

He was still playing with Napkin, letting his claws playfully 'chase' the ends of their body as Sampo snaps his fingers, the shadows forming around him finally catching the wolf's attention.

Eyes widen as his form...disappears? No. He just had to look down...way down.]

...

[Will wonders never cease. It seems Sampo has the ability to change into a smaller animal as well. Crouching down, Lycaon gingerly reaches out a hand. A fox-like creature, though not any he's seen before. A Pokemon, perhaps?]

That is you, Mr. Koski? I have to say this does make you more portable.

As long as you can direct me to these mountains, I will gladly carry you. [He holds out his arms to scoop him up when he's ready.]

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-05 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Lycaon smiles as the two Pokemon settle themselves into his arms, pressing them snugly to his chest as he makes sure they're secure.]

That is more than sufficient.

[He looks off into the distance where Sampo is pointing, seeing that little town and what lies beyond it. It would be best to avoid running straight through it, but that's a bit of a detour. He can probably figure out the layout as he goes. He just hopes its as deserted as he'd heard.

There's a soft hum as the lapis lazuli in his legs activates, making them more lightweight than they would be normally, the soft whirr of machinery as background noise.]

Hold on. We wouldn't want you to fall now.

[Without even waiting for Sampo to reply, he starts with a walk..and then that walk turns into a jog. And then, that jog turns into a sprint. Soon the wind is whipping against their faces that it's almost hard to see what's around them. Lycaon's gotten used to it, and he can't help but hide the smile as fresh air fills his nostrils and the wind threads through his hair. He loved doing this so...so much.

The landscape whips by has he runs, practically gliding along the ground with how smooth the experience is. You'd never know he was shifting his weight from one leg to the other. Any bouncing was minimal.

For now, Sampo could just enjoy the view as the grassy hills moved past him like a bullet train.]

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-07 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Lycaon's grip is a strong and steady one. Even Napkin's cloth-like body catching the wind isn't enough to shake his hold on both of them. He simply enjoys the breeze flowing through his fur and the fresh scent of grass and dandelion in the air. It's a scent he hasn't had in...quite a long time if he's honest. The French countryside? That was years ago...

The town comes into view and his feet hit the pavement, adjusting for the difference in the hardness of the ground beneath him. Thuds are replaced by clacks as the street provides him guidance through the town. It's just a little place, one could easily walk it in a good half hour, and Lycaon could speed through it without so much as a blink.

Sampo's joy is contagious too, as his eye squints against the wind.

The town gives way to the forest and the ground becomes a little more unsteady. It does slow him down some, as he has to account for obstacles in the path, but overall its relatively clear.

But the little fox-man's words cause him to slow to a trot, gait slowing to a stop as he looks around.]

My apologies, I must've gotten too caught up in the run. The air is so crisp here.

[With a light bend of his head, he peers between some trees.]

I see a cave up ahead with a clearing in front. Perhaps that would be a good place to rest?

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-09 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
That it does, Mr. Koski. It's nostalgic. Reminiscent of my younger days in the French countryside as a pup.

[Getting the sense that Sampo likely wants to stretch his legs after such a trip, he crouches down to let him off, and giving Napkin a little push to put it back into the air.]

Caves do give the impression of something living in them. They are nature's shelters.

[He gives a little pace just to make sure no aggressive Pokemon are about, ears perked and nose twitching. There ARE Pokemon of some sort around, but they seem docile. Or at the very least, aren't giving them the time of day.]

Having lunch sounds like a fine idea. I have brought some portable snacks, like nuts--I even remembered those pistachios.

[Sampo is clearly in that category of men who have started to settle down but their flight or fight instincts are clearly still active. It's not something he can really blame Sampo for either--it was good survival advice.

Lycaon knew what was edible or not to himself by Earth standards, but Kanto did have him wondering, putting a hand to his lips.]

I should be okay with most berries, then. I am not allergic to grapes like some wolfmen are. Though I'm surprised to hear of a spicy one.

[He'll leave it to Sampo to forage, walking around to look at all the foliage and flora. Some plants looked familiar, while others, especially ones with fruit, felt so foreign.

He sees a tree right by that cave with pink berries hanging from it. Picking one of them, he turns it in his hand to investigate.]

It looks much like a peach.

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-22 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Mm. It's not a straight rule, and some will not have any, but common allergies among wolfmen are grapes, onions, spring onions, and garlic. For example, I'm allergic to the latter two, but it's a very mild one. I get stomach pains but not much else.

[In hindsight, he's quite lucky.]

Is that so? I would have been utterly fooled, from its appearance. It looks so voluminous. [He turns it in his hand, curious. There was a whole ecosystem of berries and fruits here that he'd never even known about? His head is sparking with ideas.] Are they all edible by humans? [and wolfmen, most likely if so.]

I did bring my own rations as well, in case we were somewhere without foodstuffs, but I am curious on what you'll make.

[He'll let Sampo take the lead on the lunch--he's also curious on the man's culinary skills. He seemed like a jester of hidden talents.

He sets the berries down in front of Sampo, inspecting each one.]

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-26 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a shame. When it's cooking its smell is heavenly, and from what I've had it tastes delicious. But it is not worth what comes after. Thankfully my onion allergy is specifically to scallions. Bulb onions have no effect on me. [Weird.]

[Lycaon watches as Sampo expertly assembles that sandwich, crouching down to view his work. The man certainly could take what was around him and turn it into something simple, yet appetizing. He'd have to take something from this and explore what Kanto has to offer in terms of delicacies.

The watercress looked especially astonishing. It's almost as if it glittered in the sunlight. He picks up some extra, turning it in his fingers to inspect.]

Interesting. So they are edible, but not exactly something easy to cook with. [A challenge, if he's ever heard one.] I would appreciate any notes you could provide me. I will most certainly be coming back here to investigate further.

[There's a flutter of wings behind him, and his ears swivel immediately in its direction.]

...

[Flutter flutter. Patpatpatpat. Flutter.]

....Mr. Koski. I believe we have a visitor.

[Should Sampo turn around from his sandwich, he'll notice a young Noibat, perched now on Lycaon's shoulder. The man remains perfectly still, as if she would blow away in the wind if he moved an inch.]
paraselenic: icon by me dns (3 | Investigatin')

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-29 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Quite curious, isn't it? The world never ceases to be full of surprises.

[He smiles as Sampo chomps on that sandwich--truly, the joy of someone feeling refreshed after eating a good meal is one reason why he likes to prepare them himself.

His posture remains rigid though, as the Noibat has settled on his shoulder and is peering intensely at the sandwich in question.]

Perhaps you're right. She is such a little one, she probably smelled the food and came to check it out.

[Softly, he holds up a piece of bread to her. The Noibat's ears twitch, inspecting it, before giving a soft chitter.

Lycaon's brow perks.]

It seems she is more enticed by the fruit. But...

[How does he phrase the information this little bat told him. "That clown ate the last tummyache plant!" isn't exactly courteous.]

Mr. Koski, do you know what that plant was that you used? The one that had the appearance of watercress. [He's just going to find a decently firm pecha berry to give to the Noibat, who takes it without abandon.]
paraselenic: icon by me dns (21)

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-29 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Lycaon's ears twitch to and fro as he inspects his sandwich, pulling the top part of the bread off and peeling off the little herb sprig Sampo had placed on it.

While it did lose a bit of its luster since it was picked, it still had a shine to it in an alluring way. He can't..entirely blame Sampo for being intrigued by it.]

Your 'roommate' can tell if something is dangerous? That's surprisingly benevolent. [..Though, he supposes Sampo understands the mindset of the god more than anyone. It could be said in an overt way.]

It's not that I'm allergic. It's just that this little one stated the herb is medicinal in nature.

And that this is the 'last' of it.
paraselenic: icon by me dns (30)

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-10-29 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Deep down, he knows how those possessions work. It's hard not to when so many of his friends seem to have them. But every time it's explained, or the contracts they sign with them come up, it never gets any easier for the wolf to rationalize. Just one more person in his life who would be a mere gravestone had the gods not had a flight of fancy.

It's humbling.

But..that's something to reconcile with at another time. The muted sounds of Sampo's rambling become clear just as he's speaking about the herb once more.]

Mm. If I were to loosely translate, the little one says it alleviates stomach-

[He pauses as Sampo flies into his ramble. The Noibat, which had been chomping on the Pecha berry, watches in interest as the funny man across from them starts hitting his own head.

Oh, is he broken? The clown is broken, Mr. Fluffy.]

M-Mr. Koski! Is something...

[Super rare? Does Sampo KNOW this mysterious medicinal herb?]

Did something jog your memory?

[One thing's for sure, he is NOT eating that sandwich now. Just in case.]

[personal profile] paraselenic 2025-11-02 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Lycaon, and the little Noibat as well, watch as the man chatters on, getting smaller and smaller in stature as he speaks. Quite literally, actually. It wasn't just that he was hunched over. He was physically shrinking down to the size of the waterbottle he was hiding behind.

Lycaon can hardly believe his eyes as he turns his attention back to the half eaten sandwich, immediately moving to peel it apart and attempt to salvage any remaining bits that might still be there.

Since plucked, it's long lost its splendor, but he's able to find a sprig or two remaining.

Veronika seems to have her own plans, fluttering down to the table and reaching to grab the waterbottle he was hiding behind like some bat shaped Godzilla.

The clown man knows Pokemon moves, too? What a funny creature!]

..I will question the rock problem with you in a moment but...I was able to salvage what I could.

[Taking from his own snacks, he lets the pistachios out of the ziplocs he placed them in and makes two sample bags with a sprig of the herb in it, sealing it tight.]

You mean to say this herb has extraordinary health benefits? As in...it can even go so far as to heal?

[Veronika stops for a second in terrorizing the small man to look at Lycaon.

That's right! It was my tummyache plant and he went and ate it like a clown!]

We should turn this in to Professor Maple quickly, if that's the case. It may still be salvageable.

[Dan Heng is having a wonderful day right now. Classes are done for the week and his students are all doing well for the first month. The weather is perfect enough that he's decided to have tea and snacks in his backyard under his maple tree. The Pokemon are either napping nearby or playing with each other as Dan Heng puts his glasses on to read the latest science journal that's been published.

Then his text alert goes off on his phone.

This doesn't immediately break the mood. Not yet, anyway. It could just be March or Caleb asking for him to come over. Maybe to hang out, answer something on stream, or something else. So, he unlocks his phone and reads the text he got.]

[He immediately calls Sampo. Fortunately, the man is either wise enough or lucky enough to answer him quickly.]

Sampo. Please explain to me why you sent me a picture of what I can only assume is Sweet Herba Mystica, a plant so rare that it might as well be relegated to myth, and the text, "I might have messed up."

[Ah, but Sampo might get the wrong idea. So he clarifies.]

I am not angry, for the record.

But I might be disappointed.

[Lycaon was just going to stand back and let Sampo handle this. Dan Heng was his superior at POKEGO and this was not his area of expertise. He layered the ziplocs on their little 'table' as Sampo made the call, as the Noibat took a nibble at some of those pistachios. Whoever this fluffy man was, he made good snacks.

His ears are swiveled in the direction of Dan Heng's voice as he listens to him speak. And then suddenly, his blood runs cold, his singular eye fixated on those bags in front of him.

Myth. This plant was practically mythical it was so rare. It had 'mystica' in the name, for the moon's sake. And its fate was to be sandwiched between lettuce, cheese and bread (he could've baked a better bread, too)? He's quiet until Dan Heng finishes, slowly standing up and turning a horrified glance over to Sampo.

In an attempt to salvage the situation, he clears his throat.]

My apologies for interrupting. I am Lycaon, I believe we spoke regarding the event of Sir Gilgamesh's. I'm an acquaintance of Mr. Koski, and he graciously agreed to help me find a Pokemon, which brings us to today.

Are you to tell me that this plant Mr. Koski found and...digested, is not only known for its medicinal qualities but that it's so rare it's unheard of?

[Dog panic.

The Noibat perches back on Lycaon's shoulder, pistachio in hand as she munches. She also seems to have commentary on the situation, and her chittering can be heard through the speaker.

Exactly! And if it weren't for you the shrinking clown would've eaten the last of it! It won't even be as good now because he picked it. Stupid Clown. I'm going to bite his head.

Lycaon watches her flutter off to go do just that, deciding its best to let Sampo reap what he sowed as he turns back to the communicator.]

I..I bagged what we could, sir. I would be happy to hand it over to you to investigate further, as well as document the location we found it in.

[... Is it something he said? Dan Heng didn't think that would make both of them act this way. Then again, he does recall his mother using this tactic sometimes on his sister, so....

Okay, yes, disappointment is definitely worse.

He hums softly as he taps on his tablet to pull up the archives that he's so neatly organized into something sensible.]

To answer your question, that would be correct. As far as we can understand it, there are five varieties that hold unique medicinal properties. Some are for aches and pains while others aide in digestion or circulation.

I would appreciate being handed any samples that remain, small as they are, and the location will help. Sampo's right that it's strange to find Herba Mystica in Kanto, especially in a location that seems so far removed from their normal habitat.

[Pulling up the relevant files, taking notes on people and their specialties....]

You're forgiven for the mistake, Sampo. I can see that it was an honest one, but I would like for you to be on the investigation team if you think you can handle it. From what little records we have, they were first discovered in the region of Paldea, which has a Gate located in Spain. However, details are incredibly sparse, so we will need to see if there's a Paldean native we can ask for assistance in filling in the blanks.

[Dan Heng hums softly as he thinks. ]

I can see a lot of benefits for us acquiring a steady flow of fresh Herba Mystica if possible, so an expedition might be in order. It'll be big enough that I doubt POKEGO will have the manpower to handle it by ourselves. Mr. Lycaon, could I trouble you to locate someone with knowledge of the Paldea region, if not Herba Mystica specifically? I believe that your connections afford you the best possible net to find someone meeting that criteria.

[As Sampo pathetically (but endearingly) explains himself to Dan Heng, Lycaon goes over to gently remove the little Noibat from the man's head. She seems to listen, removing her mouth from gnawing on his hair to go back to perching on his shoulder, but those eyes squint at him.

It seems the clown is scared of this little metal box that talks. Silly clown. You should be scared of me!

Lycaon whispers gently to her "Shh, let us get you something else" as he holds out the Pecha berry he picked to feed her while Dan Heng gives his judgment.

All things considered, he was glad Dan Heng didn't seem too upset. It's not like Sampo purposely did it. It was just...quite the oversight. It's not until his ears perk up at his name that he looks over at the phone, walking over and leaning over to speak into it.]

I can certainly look into it. [He brings up his own phone to quickly jot the notes "Paldea Region" "Herba Mystica" and "Spain".]

As soon as I find a lead, I will bring them to POKEGO and we can take further action.

[There's no 'if' he finds a lead. He will. If they weren't exaggerating on the effects of this herb, then it's imperative that he finds more of it. Harumasa and Viktor could benefit from its medicinal properties.

There's a small glance to Sampo, who looks practically crushed by all of this. And he just...reaches up to pat his head.

There there.]
