The Red Gate
It's the middle of the month when this gate appears. Right away, the energy levels of the gate felt extremely different than the other dungeon gates that'd been appearing this month. Whatever is in this place, it's a much higher threat.
As such, Zodiac alerts the Black Order directly to take care of it. As such, a team of Black Order members are dispatched to deal with the gate. However, they aren't the only ones who have been keeping watch of the gates, as several concerned app users have also been keeping an eye on the dungeon gates on their own. Considering the strength of this gate, it becomes quickly apparent it'd be best for the groups to work together.
Once inside the gate, they will find it to be a recreation of an area of Seoul... if the city was going through a fiery apocalypse anyway. Fire scorches the city, with only one building at the center of the gate being accessible. Seems you'll have to climb up that tower if you want to reach the boss.
Good luck.

I will do no such thing.
[ Don't tell her what to do, you little shit!! It's clear that Dante is in the most danger right now- and more to the point it's clear that her firepower will do little against Jinwoo. She'd forgotten about his fire immunity, and she swears at herself under her breath for the error. She casts a look at Noa, giving him a firm shove to try and wake him up. ]
Snap out of it before you get yourself killed.
[It's a barked out command, said with all the power of a god. Of someone who is used to having their commands followed. She doesn't have time to focus on anything else, however. Instead, she turns to Jinwoo. Fire is out, so instead, her eyes glow - focusing on her latent powers. Fire may have been gifted to her in this world, but she is the Goddess of Spring and there is one thing that is always under her dominion.
A massive, gnarled tree erupts from the ground, underneath Jinwoo's feet, continuing on upwards. Thorny branches moving to encase him, to capture him and push him up into the air, away from Dante, away from all of them (16). ]

there's no time to argue with her about it as Jinwoo presses the attack and several shadow tentacles burst forward wrapped around him tightly. Dante grunts, struggling against them, but their hold is too tight preventing him from breaking free (2). all he can do is brace himself for the dagger plunged directly into his chest, a reverberating cry of pain escaping the devil's lips as blood pools from around the wound.
again his calls on his summoned swords, a closer target should be easier to hit right?? you'd think that, wouldn't you? but again the swords go wide (8) as pain bursts from his chest, his demonic healing fighting against the bleeding effect of the dagger. it struggles to fight off the effect (8), but he isn't down just yet.
hm. this might be a problem. ]

The bear is pinned down by its need to listen to commands, so it can do no less than what Jinwoo asks--even if it clearly wishes not to. Engaged with Louis, Tank makes a half-assed attempt at attacking its friend, swiping a giant paw at the hellhound's head. (5+2=7.)
Lapis' attack with her whip does indeed break Jinwoo's defenses as well (9+2=11), and that whip certainly does its job in grabbing his arm, causing blood to spatter across the shadowy floor as it digs in and tears into flesh. There's a short shout from Jinwoo's throat, but he holds it back--just in time for the literal earth to come out underneath him, as Persephone's giant plant wrapping around him, pulling him into the air--and in moments his vision is blotted out as every part of him is wrapped and confined in the great branches of the Goddess' of Spring's miracle. (12+2=14)
He can't breathe. He can feel every inch of himself getting crushed by the giant thing, and his hands glow with magic as he attempts to burn his way out from the branches, but to no avail.
Fine. If fire doesn't work...
Surely, summoning Iron in this small space would help. He closes his eyes as the shadows inside his encasing suddenly swell ashuge shadow erupts from around his form, and the axe-wielding shadow manages to tear a giant hole straight through those branches, giving Jinwoo an opportunity to shadow-jump out and escape. There are still some branches clinging around his form--some even driven through his hands and clothing, blood slowly starting to drip to the floor--He's looking rough. Tired.
his jump brings him in close with Noa, who's hissing as he stands in place with that look of fear in his eyes. Jinwoo is feeling... rough, now, but he needs to take out at least some of the Monarchs--and why not start with this one?
Since Baran has clearly been staggered for now; what with the man bleeding and unable to pin him down with his swords. Jinwoo flashes a grin, and looks straight at 'Noa' with a simpering expression. ]
Remember the last time I made you run?
You can't hide from me this time, either.
[ he mutters quietly as his hand lashes out--aiming to drive long, shadowy claws into the center of
Rakan'sNoa's chest just as the Monarch of Beasts had once done to him. (14+2=16) ]no subject
It gives Lapis the opportunity to focus on the main fight, holding back the wince when her attack lands and draws blood. Her throat tightens at the sound, clinging desperately to her composure as she takes in the state of Dante; he's already badly hurt and she knows how Jinwoo's dagger works, how that wound will only keep bleeding. And then there's the state of Jinwoo himself as that shadow, Iron, bursts from the branches.
Even now, when he's fighting against them and actively trying to kill them, she can't stop herself from crying out - in Korean rather than English, a desperate attempt to get something through to him. ]
Stop, jagiya, please!
[ Think, think... She'll need to change strategies for the moment, switching to her dressphere with sharp inhale as her whip retracts and a white hood draws over her. Let's help Noa with support, especially since he seems to be panicking - casting Hastega over the party, granting everyone double speed for five minutes (two actions for five tags). With this it allows her to do one more spell, casting Protect over Dante, granting him a shield that lasts for ten minutes and reduces physical attacks by 50% (roll with advantage against physical attacks for ten tags)
But Jinwoo is moving, and it's a second too late where she realises where he has jumped to. Even with her spell, she's still not fast enough to stop Jinwoo when he gets close to Noa, panic seizing in her chest as those claws are aimed for his chest. ]
CW: Gore, blood, descriptions of death/dying
Best not to tell her that, thinks a quietly hysteric part of his brain. Neith would hate being compared to yet another Greek.
It's too little too late to be coming to attention however. Just as he shakes his head and prepares to focus on his now very necessary 'side-gig', the shadows within the tree explode. Not in any literal, flaming display- but instead a burst of shadow and blade, instinct driving him to again attempt flight the way he did a few floors down.
Except he can't do that.
His wings are bound.
Bound, in white.
He took up this dressphere, and the cost was one of his best possible methods of defense- because while his instinct is to simply jump, the motion commands a reflex of the wing. And without the mobility of the wing, there is a stumble. A trip.
It's more than enough, he thinks in peril, for something to close the gap (4)]
GLK-K-
[....It's strange.
...He would have expected her to intervene, here. To swoop down with the power of the divine, all wrath and disgust, snapping of insolence and disrespect. She never wanted him dead after all, that would have defeated the point of...everything, wouldn't it?
Noa's claws scrabble against the arm which drove the claws home, as if it were the stone of a cliff. It's not quite gone through his heart- Jinwoo sees Rakan, a huge, muscled beast of an opponent. Noa in comparison is the size of a not-so-large dog, and the anatomy isn't quite right for the aiming.
Doesn't matter. He should be dead. In shock. Something. There's blood in his mouth. He can taste it. His diaphragm is probably completely annihilated. He can't technically breathe. Everything feels cold, and hot all at once, and...
(Monsters the size of children surrounding him. One took his tail, the little shit, and another thought it would be funny to try snatching the bones of one of his legs. Fine. Whatever)
...Ah.
(The snot-nosed brats failed to get his head or heart so he'll come right bouncing back after all.)
...He remembers this clause.
Noa's claws now dig into the arm spearing his chest. A maddening grin slowly spreads across his face- (Shame he doesn't have that cheshire grin any more isn't it?)- and it's a thing defined all by teeth.]
I think you've gone blind in the dark, [he can't help but sneer, the red-stained white starting to gleam.]
How about I ENLIGHTEN YOU! HOLY!
[Good luck dodging an attack that close- the light, if it somehow fails to do anything serious, should at least get him off the other's arm and buy the time necessary to run for the others (15). He's supposed to be the healer after all, and lucky for everyone here, he's got at least one good spell for that-]
CURA!
[...And yes he's aiming to heal Dante first (12). Shut up. The hole going through his back is just a flesh wound. If the spell covers more than one person, then fine, but he's never used this one and he's got no clue what he's doing.]

Still, now with Hastega on their side, it gives her more room to work with what she can do. Knowing fire won't do much against Jinwoo, she settles on her better talent. She creates sharp, throned vines under his feet, reaching up to grab at his legs, thorns digging deep into them to keep him in place (16). Then brandishing her sword again, while the others are trying to boost and heal them, she swings it hard - she's aiming for his head, now is not the time to be squeamish, and Lapis did say he couldn't die - so the head it is. She aims good and true, hoping to bring him down (17). ]

Bad move.
[ everything happens quickly after that; he feels the surge of energy from the hastega spell seep into his muscles and the shield settling over his body. he spares a brief glance at Lapis, his unnmoving expression almost apologetic, before returning his gaze back to Jinwoo. ] Sorry about this kid. [ with a surge of speed he chases after him, though he isn't fast enough to prevent Noa from being harmed he can at least return the favor, but instead of horrible shadow claws he aims Devil Sword Dante at the center of Jinwoo's chest (5), as another summoned sword aims for one of his arms (2). ]
cw for decapitation; impalement
Maybe this was an oversight on Jinwoo's part, as his other hand is still driven through the king of beasts--and while he can feel that his strike was true, the damned thing wasn't. Going. Down.
His head twists to look at him--just in time for that blast of Holy Light to go off in his face; (12+2=14) the attack swallowing up his vision and causing him to stagger; arm ripping out of the other as he attempts to get his vision back so he can go back on the assault. The monarchs were tough--of course they were--why would one go down with just one hit?
Such thoughts are a distraction, as he has absolutely no defenses with his vision gone, and Persephone's vines once again find their place wrapping up the delirious berserker. They tie him fast and wrap him tightly--and he has absolutely nowhere he can run. There's a moment where he considers shadow-teleporting; but the problem is...
In order to teleport, he needs to find an available shadow. With Noa's Holy Light flooding the room, there's no shadows currently to jump to that he can see, let alone think of. ]
You--
[ he opens his mouth to curse at the beast, and that's when, in the next moment, everything goes quiet, and still.
If he could see, he would notice that his field of vision suddenly changed. his head, now rolling free of his body, hits the ground with a sickening sound.
Tied by the vines and now divorced of his head, he has no way to move as Dante's sword finally hits true, Driving the entirety of the Devil's sword into his chest, running the berserking Monarch of Shadows through, and causing his body to slowly melt away into puddles of shadow.
His head likewise fades into those shifting shadows as Noa's holy light fades, and all is quiet. ]

...
And.
As the fire and smoke fade from her vision, she sees him. His body ran through on Dante's sword, and his head is... It isn't...
She knows the sound, as it hits the ground, has heard it many times herself. That horribly, sickening sound. And she sees him, scattered apart, in that split second as he melts into shadow and she can only just hold back the strangled, stricken sound as she forces her head to turn away.
He'll be fine, she tells herself as her heartbeat thunders in her ears. He'll come back, he'll be okay, so she needs to... Hold it together. She can hold it together. Blink back the tears and choke back the cries, and ignore this horrible choking feeling in her chest. ]
He... [ Her voice warbles, on the edge of watery, and she grits her teeth as she tries again. Clenches her hands into tight fists as her weapons fade. ]
He'll... revive in a moment. That berserker state should have worn off by then.
[ Every word is careful and even, measured to not let any feeling slip through. Another deep breath, and she'll turn her focus to Noa; she's very deliberately not looking anyone in the face. ]
And stay still for a moment, I can heal you.
[ This will give her something else to focus on and please ignore the shake in her hands as she raises a hand to heal, her magic manifesting in shadowy wisps that knit the wounds together. ]

[It's over. It's done, at least it should be, and Noa barely comprehends much of anything beyond what he himself just finished. Dante seems...
Ah, a little off center. Maybe he performed the healing wrong? Everything feels exhausting somehow. All the fear in his bones replaced with a weary haze as he faintly thinks to himself that the one they're fighting seems somehow shorter all of a sudden. Sounds feel like they're going through water, yet he can't seem to bring himself to close his eyes and just sleep.
It's...
...Someone's in front of him. At least he manages not to move. Or fall over. Really the latter is more impressive (14).] Ahh..?
[Healing accepted, fortunately.]

Lapis is clearly hurt, she knows what that pain feels like. Having your world torn out from under you as the one you love is ripped from it. But she doesn't offer comfort. She's... not good at that. Instead, she stands back, keeping a quiet eye on proceedings, putting her sword away, folding her arms and waiting. Quietly. ]

so he steps aside to join Persephone, sitting down beside her with a dramatic sigh as his gaze focuses on the spot Jinwoo's body melted into puddles of shadow. now, they wait. there is very little else either of them can do, and as battered as Noa and Lapis are it's probably for the best that they stand watch and make certain what comes back is Jinwoo and not something else entirely. ]
What a day.

The Shadow that'd taken over his mind stands in front of him--and its his own eyes that he sees, but they're tired. And they're, above everything else, lonely.
Jinwoo gazes back at the shadow impassively, and shakes his head.
They're not the same. Not anymore. This was his life.
He'd already had his.
As if sensing the rejection, the shadow's eyes close, and the figure melts away into the depths of the shadows, and Jinwoo finds himself alone again. His mind drifting as the darkness swallows him whole.
To everyone outside in the red gate, they'll simply see those shadows shifting--and a slow, and heavy smoke lifts from them; disappating into the air like foul smoke and melting away.
Once the fog clears, it leaves behind the unconcious--but breathing--body of Sung Jinwoo; head intact, and without a caved hole in the middle of his chest where Dante's sword drove through.
He's alive; but sleeping, it seems. The rage and blindness having faded away. ]

Once the wound is healed up, there's going to be some gently motioning for Noa to sit down lest he actually fall over. Whether he listens or not, there's a very clear freeze as the shadows reform behind her. She turns on her heel in time to see him laying there, and this time the relieved sob escapes her before she can attempt to stop it. ]
Jinwoo...! [ He's alive. Of course he is, she knows how his resurrection works. Of course he's okay.
Yet that does little to dimish her urgency as she goes to his side, kneeling down and bringing an arm under and around his shoulders, propping him up against her as her other hand rests against his chest. Where his heart beats firm and steady, like he wasn't just ran through mere moments ago. ]
He's fine... He's fine, I can't sense that shadow or magic over him anymore. He's just asleep.
[ Her vision blurs for a moment, but she blinks hard. No, she still needs to keep it together; even as her breathing wavers and her own heart thuds a harsh rhythm against her ribs. None of that matters right now. ]
He's okay..
[ It sounds more that she's telling herself that than anything else. ]

Behind Lapis, and in his vague line of sight, he can see shadows gathering together. His hearing clears with his vision- from blurs and indistinct noises to the crisp shapes he's (mostly) used to, and the sounds of panicked self-reassurances.
Nearsighted he may be, but it isn't hard to piece things together from there.
Noa doesn't sit, not immediately, but he does carefully pad over before sitting With the two. One, freshly re-headed, the other grieving the only way one in such a situation can.
He swallows.] It's what you said would happen after all.
[The words don't come out biting, or snarking. They're soft, if anything. Gentle, the way that only those in the deepest of slumber ever get to hear.]
...You should have more faith in your knowledge. ...It kept everyone alive, [He points out, quietly not thinking about just why he even lasted long enough for Lapis to reach in the first place.]

[She doesn't plan to linger, instead, keeping a quiet eye on proceedings. Once Jinwoo comes back to the land of the living, her shoulders relax. ]
Welcome back to the land of the living. I am glad I did not need to give you coins for the ferryman this day.
[ She glances at Noa. ]
He is correct, this has meant we could survive this day and ensure nothing in this realm broke out into the city. That is no small feat.
