July Event Log

JULY EVENT
Dominant Element: Water
Waning Element: Fire

Full Moon: July 9th - July 11th

As July rolls in, the Spirit Vein's colours shift to hues of blue as the water element takes dominance. And with it, comes the most miserable month of the summer. On sunny days, it'll be hot and extremely humid, with the air feeling like a swamp. However these hot days are interrupted with heavy storms that will let loose at least a couple times a week. Take care not to get caught in a downpour, and make sure you don't have anything outside that could be blown away by straight line winds.

Adventurers beware!

♪- I've Seen Things

ALERT: NO SPIRIT REALM ANOMALY DETECTED
Element Classification: Water
Danger Level: None! :)
Designation: N/A
Zodiac has not detected any Spirit Gate this month. Have a wonderful month's break! Please visit the Zodiac offices for more information, but there's nothing to worry about!

Well, that's a weird announcement. Should you decide to drop by the Zodiac offices, staff look a mixture of confused, unsure or completely relaxed. Professor Barbie greets you and tells you that for once, Zodiac hasn't picked up on any anomalies or temporary spirit gates. While some staff members believe this is a terrible sign and are starting to fret what it could mean, most of them are honestly glad for the chance to have a break for once. They assure you that they'll keep an eye on things and send out an alert if anything crops up- go enjoy July! Check out the convention!

So off you go to enjoy the month, and everything seems to be normal. That is until you're in a group- perhaps you're at home, perhaps your place of work. No matter where you are, you and the rest of your group start to hear the steady beat of drums. Not everyone reacts to it- not even within your group. It seems only a select number of you can hear them, but hear them you do. They beat a steady rhythm, one that gets quicker and louder if you choose to move in the direction of the sound. Eventually, you find a wooden box with the name Jumanji carved on the front, along with some jungle scenes.

Opening it up, you will find a wooden board game, with board spaces spiralling around the board, all congregating into a glass orb in the centre. Inside a small box in the games lid, you will find delicately carved jungle animals made of ivory. Once picked up, they will immediately fly off your hands to starting positions on the board. There's also a pair of ivory dice - just begging to be rolled. On the inside covers of the board, the game proclaims:

Jumanji
A game for those who seek to find
A way to leave their world behind
Roll your dice to move your token, doubles get another turn
The first player to reach the end wins

The OTHER side of the inside cover holds a dire warning:

Adventurers beware!
Do not begin unless you intend to finish
The exciting consequences of the game vanish
A player has reached Jumanji and called out it's name

Despite this, if you heard the drums, you do feel a strange compulsion to play. Even if you're not the sort of person who would normally play what looks like a genuinely sketchy game, you feel it couldn't possibly hurt. It's just a board game after all, what harm could there be in rolling the dice?

A game for those who seek to find

♪- Stampede!

And so roll the dice you do. There are seven games just like this, happening all around the city. And once that first dice is rolled? You have been caught in the game's trap. A barrier will form around the area you're in, keeping you, your fellow players, and any unlucky soul who happened to be in the space when the barrier went up tapped in that area. No one can get in, no one can get out.

If you're thinking at this point that perhaps you shouldn't have rolled the dice, it's far, far too late. Your little ivory token moves forward on the board of it's own free will, there's no pulling it off, no stopping it. The game has begun and it's clear that it does not intend to stop. Once the token has moved the requisite number of dice rolls, the orb in the centre swirls a little rhyme for you to read. Unfortunately, that's not all it does. Immediately, whatever you rolled is transported right into your area, and you will need to deal with it. The vast majority of what you roll will be actively out to prevent you from finishing the game- it's almost as if the game is purposefully making it as difficult as possible to complete, now its magic is being wrought on the world.

The designated game areas in the city are:

THE CRYSTAL TOWER
RANDOM PLAY
MEROPIDE: RANDOMISER WING
PERSEPHONE'S COTTAGE
CYGNUS ACADEMY
THE MORRIGAN
RIKU'S APPARTMENT

OOCly, please see your area-specific sheet found on each of your toplevels. This will allow you to see the dangers you have each to deal with as the game progresses, and how you want to play the game as a group. Please be sure to discuss with your game-mates about this so you're agreed on how you want to play!

A way to leave their world behind

♪- Monkey Mayhem

You can fight and avoid the dangers that the game spews out as best you can- but for the most part they remain exactly where they are. The more you roll, the more comes out of the game, dangers piling on top of one another to distract you and keep you from finishing. But finish you must- the game was very clear that the only way to get rid of everything that it releases into the world is to finish it. You start to realise the barriers that have been put up are the game's doing too. If you ever want to be free of the barriers and all the nonsense coming out of the game, you are going to have to play to the bitter end.

If you're lucky enough to have bystanders caught in your area with you, they will be able to help you battle through what the game brings on you. None of them can play for you. Once the game has chosen its players, they are the only ones who can complete the game- and they must do so in the correct order. What is a board game without rules, after all? And so you must work together, protecting yourselves, each other, and trying to keep the game itself out of harm's way. It will be a difficult task, one that only increases as the game moves on and more comes out of it. You will need to function as a team in order to survive this particular board game night.

In the jungle you must wait

♪- The Hunter

Perhaps you got it into your head that you'd cheat to try and finish the game. All it would take is making sure you drop the dice so they land a certain way, right? Or trying to tilt the game board at just the right moment to make sure your dice turn at the last second to a more favourable number. It would end the game quickly and you can all be free of it, right? And given how much danger the game is throwing at you, it's only fair that you can play dirty too, right?

Unfortunately, Jumanji very much does not approve of cheating. Any attempts to cheat in the game will result in an angry message appearing in the orb:

In the jungle you must wait, 'til the end frees you from this fate.

And then you feel your whole body being pulled. If you look down, you can see your body being pulled like taffy, even if it doesn't hurt, it's frightening to look at. It's even more frightening once you realise where you're being pulled to. Your whole self is being trapped into the orb in the centre of the game. No matter how much you fight it, no matter how others might try to pull you back, the game is determined to see you punished for your transgression.

When the game stops pulling you will find yourself in a massive jungle. Unlike the game, which only pulls dangers into the world based on dice rolls, this is where everything comes from. As such, there are countless dangers you will have to face. You will get almost no rest in this area, as almost everything is actively out to kill you. Nothing you do will get you out of the jungle- it seems to stretch on forever. All you can do is try to keep yourself (and anyone who was trapped with you) until someone managers to finish their game. Only then will you find yourself back in the area you were originally dragged away from.

Aftermath

When a player finally gets their token to the center orb, the whole thing glows a bright green. The word JUMANJI appears in middle of it. Speak the word out loud as the instructions told you, and a sudden whirlwind will pick up around you. Everything that was brought out of the game gets sucked into this whirlwind (causing extra damage as they slam into the area, of course), everything turning faster and faster, before being sucked into the orb. When the last danger vanishes away, all the damage that was caused by the game magically vanishes in the blink of an eye. Any injuries the game inflicted are gone. It's like it never happened at all. The barrier around you drops, and you're finally free. Of course, you now have seven extremely cursed board games to deal with, but at least for now, the ordeal is over.

DION'S TURN

[personal profile] light_warden 2025-07-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Dion has been granted the dubious pleasure of being the first in their turn order. He picks up the ivory dice, hesitates for only half a second, and then throws them onto the board.

A three and a four.

The komodo dragon begins to move all on its own seven spaces forward. Once the garnet piece stops on that space, golden words float up from the domed center of the game.]

"Every month at the quarter moon
"There will be a monsoon in your lagoon."

[And then it starts to rain. At first it's just a sprinkling, but then it quickly becomes a torrential downpour that threatens to flood the area. Thinking fast, Dion grabs the game with its dice and his halberd. Even with just that small amount of time, the water has already risen to ankle-height. He has to shout in order to be heard above the noise of the monsoon.]

Get to higher ground! It's starting to flood!

[Dion attempts to tap into his Light magic... but it doesn't respond at all. Bahamut is still with him, but the dragon is not able to do anything except provide a presence in his mind. Not having the time to really think too much more on that, the blond grimly starts trudging as quickly as possible through the rising water to get to the staircase.]

[It's hard not to feel nervousness with even the little oddities of the game during 'prep' so to speak. The lot of them watch the dice fall and the message which follows, with Noa in particular feeling tension down to his bones.

And then it starts to rain. A lot.
]

NYHG-

Good thing we're in a tower!? [He half shouts, half asks, fumbling his steps to run through the water.]

Eugh, at least I can swim if I have to...

[He'll wait until they're actually out of the water before asking for the dice, but once they are-]

Ugh...my turn better not do anything like that...

[Way to jinx it.] Good thing we didn't have pizza to lose, hmm?

[Anby had been absorbed in watching the game react, wondering how the game piece knew how to move the squares that Dion rolled- when it starts to rain on them.

!!!!

Being a cat, she's really not a fan of the sudden downpour being rained down upon them, so she makes a rather unhappy noise. But at the same time, her brain kicks into action- willing to follow Dion's lead. She jumps from the table and starts moving fast as she can towards the stairs, but also glancing over her shoulders to make sure the rest are following after alright]

[Jill was raised in danger. The moment the rain starts, something inside of her changes. She makes sure she has her sword before she rushes to the stairs.]

[Like Anby, she’ll make sure there‘s nobody struggling. Once she confirms everyone’s safe, she heads up high enough to avoid the water.]

[Husk grumbles as the rain starts to fall- he lifts his wings over his head to shield him from it. Luckily, he is a water element- this is starting to turn into a fuckton of water, but he's sure he can stem the flow a little. He puts his hand out to try and slow the rising tide...but nothing happens. He doesn't feel a connection to it at all. His ears pin back. ]

...Well, that's fucked.

[He tries to take to the wing, but that doesn't work either. Right. No powers then. Great. He follows Anby across the table. He's past his prime by a long way, but he can still jump okay. He knows his knees and back won't thank him for this later. He keeps an eye on the people here- though it's notable he puts a hand on Anby's should as he gets up there. He has favourites when it comes to his kids, sorry guys. ]

[The blond does a mental head count before looking out at the water flooding the floor they'd been on. Unfortunately, he doesn't see anything else suspicious in the water at this time (3).]

Very fortunate indeed. A normal house would not have fared nearly as well.

[Dion glances over at Husk before opening up the board game again. His eyes now land on a warning that they didn't seem to have noticed before now. He has to fight the urge to growl.]

According to the rules laid out, the "exciting consequences" will vanish as soon as one of us reaches the end of the game and says Jumanji. It also says that since we've started the game, we will have to finish it.

[Given that none of them can leave now that the floor below them has flooded, they're a bit stuck.]

Also... I've noticed that my magic doesn't work. What of the rest of you?
blueeyeswhitedoppelganger: (Eugh that's going to stain)

Exciting, it says...

[So Noa mutters as he glares down below, shaking his head. All this talk of powers- or the lack thereof- has him nervous though. His wings certainly don't feel any different than they do typically, but he's also not one to default to flight.

And anyway, there's a much faster way for him to test this.
] Given how easily grabbing these goes for me...

[He aims to grab them with a 'fist'. What happens is he knocks the dice off the board like a particularly testy house cat.]

Tch! Well, apparently I don't even get opposable thumbs until we're through then!

[The dice clatter, but in the meantime his eyes move to the game board. There, the butter jade Lion is already starting to make its way forward.]

At least that counts then...what does it say?

[Nothing great when the floor beneath them just flooded!

A slithering serpent disguised on the ground. It will wrap you up and drag you down.]

[It's okay Husk, Anby won't call you out on the favoritism. Instead she gives a nod at the shoulder touch. Still alive and accounted for, even if she's wet.

At the question about her powers, she'll try to user her own electric powers, before shaking her head]

Mine don't work either. But I use lightning, so that might be for the best. [What with all the water around now.

She was about to suggest coming up with a plan, when Noa accidentally rolls. SHe immediately gets into a battle position again as the poem reads out]

[Jill pauses, a pensive expression on her face. First she nods towards Dion.]

I had thought to avoid using my power due to the rising water levels. I can try now.

[She closes her eyes, and—-

Nothing.]

It appears I’m cut off as well. I received combat training in the Order; are there any of us who aren’t able to fight without powers? If so, we need to make sure to keep them protected.

[She keeps her sword drawn, between her and the water.]
wiseoldbartender: (You don't have to sit around)

[Husk offers a fleeting smile to Anby, before it's back to his usual dour expression, focusing on the mess they're currently in. ]

So. We gotta keep playing this thing until it's done. But rolling the dice makes shit come out and get us, fucking great.

[ He shakes his head at the question of the powers. ]

Nothing, can't even fly. I got... shit, I got my knife cards in my pocket, couple'a dice, a knife? That's about it. I can fight without my powers, been in the Order long enough for- [no sorry Anby? ] what do you mean you used lightning???? In the water??? Anby!!!

[That would kill them, Anby!!! He's about to point that out when the kid just bumblefucks the dice. He looks skyward, heaving out a grumbling sigh. He's scanning for whatever this is- slithering sounds like-

There it is- a rippling shape in the water making its way towards them. A BIG rippling shape. He points, pulling out one of his knife cards- he ideally needs to see it better to hit it, though.]

[Husk's warning comes too late. Or, perhaps, they severely underestimated how fast this snake can move. The python hisses ferociously as it suddenly wraps its body around Dion's leg. He lands on his back with a grunt, but now he's starting to be pulled towards the water (3).

The water that has some other problems, as they see more movement coming straight towards them. The crocodiles sense easy prey.

Fortunately, Dion hasn't let go of his halberd and he's able to twist his body to drive it into the crystal (20). He manages to catch it in a seam between the stairs, firmly lodging himself on the staircase for now. The blond man holds onto his weapon with grim determination to not get pulled further.]

Tch. [A nod in Jill's direction.] The game seems themed in such a way that I'll have a 'natural' advantage given how I lived prior recruitment, but that's far from where we should normally be standing...for that matter I've really only been told about animals like this, I spent my time in the Rocky Mountains.

[As for the water freak-out, he just titls his head back and blinks.] Oh it's hardly that bad, it'd have to have been more direct to actually cause damage to any of us. Might hurt, certainly, but the conductivity is very over-hyped.

[Though, he does pause.] ...Mmm. Well, unless this is somehow salt-water now, then we could have an issue...

[Speaking of issues though. Noa sucks in a hiss, darting forward as the sight of something in the water. He's no jaguar- that he knows all too well, and he can't feel any of the supernatural strength as granted by his 'mother', but that's no matter here.

He knows how crocodile jaws work, and as the closest of them opens their jaws to prepare for a strike-
]

NRRYYAAAAAAAAH-!

[...Pounces right on the poor thing's head (18). It thrashes, certainly not enjoying this but even a normal cat can hold something large enough.]

[Anby isn't adding to the chatter. Instead, she's in a battle stance and watching for the snake, calculating the best time to attack and looking for an opening. Anby had never been a great thinker or even a great communicator-- but survival and combat was one place she always excelled.

The opening comes as it snatches at Dion and Noa goes in for the attack. Not willing to let her teammate get harmed, she lunges in. With incredible precision, she swings out her blade and not only evades harming Noa in her swing- but finds the exact point that allows her to decapitate the beast in a single blow (nat 20).

She then jumps away, moving with a catlike grace as she lowers her blade]
