July Event Log

JULY EVENT
Dominant Element: Water
Waning Element: Fire
Full Moon: July 9th - July 11th
※
As July rolls in, the Spirit Vein's colours shift to hues of blue as the water element takes dominance. And with it, comes the most miserable month of the summer. On sunny days, it'll be hot and extremely humid, with the air feeling like a swamp. However these hot days are interrupted with heavy storms that will let loose at least a couple times a week. Take care not to get caught in a downpour, and make sure you don't have anything outside that could be blown away by straight line winds.

ALERT: NO SPIRIT REALM ANOMALY DETECTED
Element Classification: Water
Danger Level: None! :)
Designation: N/A
Zodiac has not detected any Spirit Gate this month. Have a wonderful month's break! Please visit the Zodiac offices for more information, but there's nothing to worry about!
Well, that's a weird announcement. Should you decide to drop by the Zodiac offices, staff look a mixture of confused, unsure or completely relaxed. Professor Barbie greets you and tells you that for once, Zodiac hasn't picked up on any anomalies or temporary spirit gates. While some staff members believe this is a terrible sign and are starting to fret what it could mean, most of them are honestly glad for the chance to have a break for once. They assure you that they'll keep an eye on things and send out an alert if anything crops up- go enjoy July! Check out the convention!
So off you go to enjoy the month, and everything seems to be normal. That is until you're in a group- perhaps you're at home, perhaps your place of work. No matter where you are, you and the rest of your group start to hear the steady beat of drums. Not everyone reacts to it- not even within your group. It seems only a select number of you can hear them, but hear them you do. They beat a steady rhythm, one that gets quicker and louder if you choose to move in the direction of the sound. Eventually, you find a wooden box with the name Jumanji carved on the front, along with some jungle scenes.
Opening it up, you will find a wooden board game, with board spaces spiralling around the board, all congregating into a glass orb in the centre. Inside a small box in the games lid, you will find delicately carved jungle animals made of ivory. Once picked up, they will immediately fly off your hands to starting positions on the board. There's also a pair of ivory dice - just begging to be rolled. On the inside covers of the board, the game proclaims:
A game for those who seek to find
A way to leave their world behind
Roll your dice to move your token, doubles get another turn
The first player to reach the end wins
The OTHER side of the inside cover holds a dire warning:
Do not begin unless you intend to finish
The exciting consequences of the game vanish
A player has reached Jumanji and called out it's name
Despite this, if you heard the drums, you do feel a strange compulsion to play. Even if you're not the sort of person who would normally play what looks like a genuinely sketchy game, you feel it couldn't possibly hurt. It's just a board game after all, what harm could there be in rolling the dice?

And so roll the dice you do. There are seven games just like this, happening all around the city. And once that first dice is rolled? You have been caught in the game's trap. A barrier will form around the area you're in, keeping you, your fellow players, and any unlucky soul who happened to be in the space when the barrier went up tapped in that area. No one can get in, no one can get out.
If you're thinking at this point that perhaps you shouldn't have rolled the dice, it's far, far too late. Your little ivory token moves forward on the board of it's own free will, there's no pulling it off, no stopping it. The game has begun and it's clear that it does not intend to stop. Once the token has moved the requisite number of dice rolls, the orb in the centre swirls a little rhyme for you to read. Unfortunately, that's not all it does. Immediately, whatever you rolled is transported right into your area, and you will need to deal with it. The vast majority of what you roll will be actively out to prevent you from finishing the game- it's almost as if the game is purposefully making it as difficult as possible to complete, now its magic is being wrought on the world.
The designated game areas in the city are:
RANDOM PLAY
MEROPIDE: RANDOMISER WING
PERSEPHONE'S COTTAGE
CYGNUS ACADEMY
THE MORRIGAN
RIKU'S APPARTMENT
OOCly, please see your area-specific sheet found on each of your toplevels. This will allow you to see the dangers you have each to deal with as the game progresses, and how you want to play the game as a group. Please be sure to discuss with your game-mates about this so you're agreed on how you want to play!

You can fight and avoid the dangers that the game spews out as best you can- but for the most part they remain exactly where they are. The more you roll, the more comes out of the game, dangers piling on top of one another to distract you and keep you from finishing. But finish you must- the game was very clear that the only way to get rid of everything that it releases into the world is to finish it. You start to realise the barriers that have been put up are the game's doing too. If you ever want to be free of the barriers and all the nonsense coming out of the game, you are going to have to play to the bitter end.
If you're lucky enough to have bystanders caught in your area with you, they will be able to help you battle through what the game brings on you. None of them can play for you. Once the game has chosen its players, they are the only ones who can complete the game- and they must do so in the correct order. What is a board game without rules, after all? And so you must work together, protecting yourselves, each other, and trying to keep the game itself out of harm's way. It will be a difficult task, one that only increases as the game moves on and more comes out of it. You will need to function as a team in order to survive this particular board game night.

Perhaps you got it into your head that you'd cheat to try and finish the game. All it would take is making sure you drop the dice so they land a certain way, right? Or trying to tilt the game board at just the right moment to make sure your dice turn at the last second to a more favourable number. It would end the game quickly and you can all be free of it, right? And given how much danger the game is throwing at you, it's only fair that you can play dirty too, right?
Unfortunately, Jumanji very much does not approve of cheating. Any attempts to cheat in the game will result in an angry message appearing in the orb:
And then you feel your whole body being pulled. If you look down, you can see your body being pulled like taffy, even if it doesn't hurt, it's frightening to look at. It's even more frightening once you realise where you're being pulled to. Your whole self is being trapped into the orb in the centre of the game. No matter how much you fight it, no matter how others might try to pull you back, the game is determined to see you punished for your transgression.
When the game stops pulling you will find yourself in a massive jungle. Unlike the game, which only pulls dangers into the world based on dice rolls, this is where everything comes from. As such, there are countless dangers you will have to face. You will get almost no rest in this area, as almost everything is actively out to kill you. Nothing you do will get you out of the jungle- it seems to stretch on forever. All you can do is try to keep yourself (and anyone who was trapped with you) until someone managers to finish their game. Only then will you find yourself back in the area you were originally dragged away from.
When a player finally gets their token to the center orb, the whole thing glows a bright green. The word JUMANJI appears in middle of it. Speak the word out loud as the instructions told you, and a sudden whirlwind will pick up around you. Everything that was brought out of the game gets sucked into this whirlwind (causing extra damage as they slam into the area, of course), everything turning faster and faster, before being sucked into the orb. When the last danger vanishes away, all the damage that was caused by the game magically vanishes in the blink of an eye. Any injuries the game inflicted are gone. It's like it never happened at all. The barrier around you drops, and you're finally free. Of course, you now have seven extremely cursed board games to deal with, but at least for now, the ordeal is over.

The man with the gun appears, he takes aim at Lighter- Jun was right about that, too - Harumasa is diving in the way, and then Jun follows suit. Varian's not fast enough to stop any of that. The gun fires one second, and the next, Jun is on the ground with a wet, gruesome thud.]
Jun!!! [He races over, half-falling, half-skidding to his knees next to his prone partner. Oh christ, there's so much blood. He fights the urge to pass out, pushing it to the back of his mind not now, not now. He puts his hands on Jun's chest, trying desperately to step the bleeding as he tries to check how bad the damage is.] Nonononononono. Don't you fucking dare die on me.
[ He's pulling out his ARCUS, ready to set off Seraphic Ring when he realises... there's no exit wound. He swears under his breath, resting his fingertips above the wound, reaching out with his earth powers. He can feel the bullet, lodged deep inside his partner. His fingers twitch, and just for a moment, he considers using his abilities to pull it out. But he can't see it, and he doesn't know what damage it'll do coming out. If it'll make things worse. Fuck fuck fuck. A frightened, chocked sound pulls out of his throat. ]
The bullet's still in there!
[ He can't keep the sheer panic out of his voice. The man he loves is dying on the floor in front of him and there's nothing he can do. He can't fix this, he can't save him. Yet again, where it really matters, when he needs to be able to do something the most, he's come up useless. He pushes back the thoughts screaming in the back of his mind, focusing on his partner. He doesn't take his eyes off him, not for a damn second. ]
I- I can't heal him if it's still in there! We need to get him out of here and- and to a hospital- now. [Varian could normally carry Jun no problem, but he's not sure he can do it in a way that won't make the bullet cause more damage. He sucks in a breath when he realises he stopped breathing for a moment there.] Can- can someone help me get him out? Please. [ His voice breaks. Please please please please. Not Jun, he can't lose Jun. ]

one minute, Ghilley is ooh'ing and aah'ing over the gameboard--reading the rules on the fold out sides out loud in a way that probably settles into the rest of the noise of the Rumpus Room. he fishes out one of the pieces and delightedly calls out the magnets as it fastens to the board, committing himself to playing a round of the game at least--it doesn't look too hard or viable for exploitation, after all.
Reach the End of the Jungle and call out its name to win. fun. silly. the glowing display in the middle lights up with a little limerick--fun, fun, this almost feels like fun, and then a bag of Taco Bell is being whipped at Ghilley's face as something unwelcome crosses into the room and everything happens very fast, all at once
he hones in on the gun being leveled and the boom of the rifle being fired.
there's an old anecdote that only human beings follow the line of a gesture when, say, a finger's being pointed--beasts look at the finger.
Ghilley cannot help with wherever the bullet is going.
the beast he is, he goes to the gun.
the fast food bag plops on the floor ungracefully despite Jun's care to send it to safety. Ghilley twists like a serpent--one step on his seat, over it, and then there's the clang of metal on metal as Ghilley misses flesh and settles for putting sword to gun and wrenching it up, holding it wide and back, baring his teeth. ]

And yet the entity reveals itself not with a flourish or an approach. It appears as if it simply had been there the entire time. In a blink--less than a blink--with its gun raised towards Lighter.
He's on his feet by the time Harumasa dives towards Lighter. He's running across the room as Jun dives in front of the bullet. He's not fast enough to catch the bullet like Jun did
( he shot jun lighter lives but he shot jun he shot jun he shot jun he shot jun)
but the Duke of Meropiode moves. Zig-zagging on approach like he'd done so many times before--approaching danger without any sense of self-preservation, only rage and a desire to protect causing his footprints to leave frosty, ice-spiked bootprints on the Rumpus Room's floor as he flies towards the gun-toting man.
Perhaps it's a good thing Ghilley gets there first to yank the gun out of the way, because it gives Wriothesley a perfect opening, the hunter's arms still desperately clinging to the gun that's been thrust skyward--leaving his neck bare and defenseless.
A hound's favorite target.
Fingers grasp around the would-be murderer's neck, a rage settled in Wriothesley's bones that he hasn't felt in a long time. Normally when apprehending violent criminals, he has enough self-control to simply apprehend his victims. To threaten them into backing down their attack, or to calm them down. A rough sentence or two from the Warden to keep them from continuing their assault is all that's needed.
But the Hunter does not show fear. In eyes that Wriothesley hasn't fully realised mirror his own, he shows absolutely no fear--even struggling to get his gun free and --
Frost crawls up the hunter's face as The Duke's grip tightens. Fingers curling in and digging into soft flesh, hard enough to pierce skin, and then there's one single and resounding
Snap.
Wriothesley stands still for a moment, letting the man dangle limply in his hand before he simply drops him to the floor, eyes up, wild, and looking at the room at large. The threat is down, now he needs to see his people get to safety. ]

Well. He should be used to it by now, always being too late to do anything but clean up the aftermath, shouldn't he? Their foe is being dealt with by two of their best fighters, so Maxima turns his attention to the remedy, settling on his knees beside Varian. Jun is so small, and he's losing so much blood...but the fact that he's still bleeding is a promising sign.]
We're too far from the surface, he won't make it to help. We need to stop the bleeding. Help me lay him flat. [He glances around quickly, and finds a soft tablecloth within arm's reach (17), folding it over itself once, twice, forming a pad of cloth that will be thick enough to soak up the blood but not so thick that it keeps him from being able to press down effectively.] I'm sorry, this will hurt. [He leans into the pressure with all the weight he can, desperate to stem the flow. He's not even sure it will be enough, with how deep and central the wound is. But there's still hope, just as long as Jun keeps breathing.]

her heart stopped, breath caught in her throat. mis-matched eyes darting around to see Jun collapse to the ground blood pouring from his wound, the gun man, her partner and Ghilley dispatching the gunman.
( Jun was shot Jun is bleeding oh gods he's bleeding )
it's Varian's voice that snaps her out of the shock, her feet carrying her over to his side. it's still in there, the bullet is still in there. they can't heal him, they have to get the bullet out if they don't get it out─ ]
Here, I can... [ her voice trembles, fear etched into every syllable, holding a hand out as a orb of shimmering water starts to form above it. it grows quickly and the moment it becomes large enough she exhales, looking towards both Maxima and Varian. ] I can clean it and stem the flood of blood with my waters, but we... we have to get him to a doctor.

He's deeply grateful for Maxima and Furina's help, nodding numbly as he helps get Jun flat on the ground. He sits back as Maxima and Furina do what they can, to stem the blood, to clean the wound. His eyes wide, skin pale. ]
We really do. But Maxima's right- even if we could teleport him up there - it's jostle him too much. We need to stablise him first.
[This is not Varian's area AT ALL. He's good with machines, with chemicals. Not this. He looks at his ARCUS again, chewing his lip. Seraphic Ring is completely out - that's a full heal and who knows what it'll do to Jun with the bullet inside him. But- ]
...Okay, I can use a smaller healing spell with this. It- it won't do much, but it-it should help stablise him enough that we can move him. Though if we-we can get him a stretcher or something that... that would be ideal.
[He instead conjures Breath, bringing a small gust of healing wind from the device, aiming it for the wound. As he'd warned, it doesn't heal Jun fully, the bullet is still lodged deep in there- but it does at least heal the artery the bullet nicked as it went in. It's nowhere near enough to heal his partner- Furina was right in that he needed a doctor for that, but it at least stops the bleeding (17).
Varian feels the familiar drain on his energy after the ARCUS does its thing, and he leans on the floor for a moment to gather himself again. He doesn't care. If he can keep Jun alive, he can have all of it. Every drop of energy inside him. He'd give it without even a second thought. He lets out a breath, looking at his work.]
Okay, I- I think that stopped the blood. But the bullet's deep- deep in there. I don't wanna risk moving it - there's no way I could without doing more damage.

And then, the scent of blood fills the air. Ghilley and the Duke rush forward, the threat is taken care of, and Varian--
It's been hard, the past ten or so months in this place. Living here not knowing if he's going to be sent back to his world, not knowing how to navigate friendships in a modern, mostly peaceful environment. Not knowing if he should try to make friends, even, with how people tend to come and go from this place, too. But if there's anyone James would consider his friend here... it's Varian.
In the chaos, he jumps down from his perch, transforming back to human and moving immediately through the crowd, hitting the button on the side of his gauntlet and locking it in place, summoning his shield and keeping it summoned. Lay him flat, Maxima says. Get him to a doctor, Furina says. We need to stabilize him, Varian says.
He sees that blood and he's transported back, five-years-old and clinging to a railing, covered in his parents blood, a decade older and watching the robot who destroyed their world take the only father figure he'd ever known away from him; watching his sister fly that robot up and into the sun, not knowing if she'd make it back; a year after that holding his girlfriend close and trying to smile for her as she took her final breath; months after that and watching a ruthless multidimensional warlord put a bullet through his father's head-- James knows death. He's greeted it like an old friend, has felt it breathe hot and heavy down his neck.
He's not going to let it get to his friends. Not here. Not now.
He doesn't want Varian to feel the pain of losing someone like this.]
Here. [He slides the gauntlet off of his left hand, laying it on the ground, the shield small to everyone almost everyone else, but just the right size for the smallest among them to be able to lay the bulk of their bodies on.] This is strong enough to cut through steel, if we can fasten a rope or something to it, we should be able to slide him out of here on it without making things worse.
TW: flashback, blood, possibly emeto, breathing problems
The growl abruptly cuts off as he crumples to the ground like a lifeless doll. Harumasa grips at his chest, coughing and struggling to breathe. He hasn't been injured, but blood trickles down the corners of his mouth gruesomely. It's a struggle just to get back to his knees, only to choke on what feels like nothing.
He spits up some blood onto the floor.
Harumasa...!
His ears are ringing.
He falls onto his side. Still conscious, but he's struggling to breathe. Pain makes it feel like his nerves have been set on fire.
He can't even call for help. He doesn't have the air for it.]
1/3 cw ptsd and mentions of gun violence
To say Lighter blinked would be incorrect. 9.
He didn't. There wasn't a chance to. A hostile presence detected way too late. A sudden crashing to the ground. A gunshot blasting in his ear and sending him back. 8
Back, back, further back than he knew. The voices around him muffled, his sight completely blurred despite his eyes being wide with shock. All he could hear was a hail of gunfire, followed by sirens rushing down a low income street.
"Are they coming back, Abuelita? You said they're with God... but is God... is He gonna let me see them again?" 7
"'Cause you know what happens when you cross people like that! If it wasn't them it would've been Lorenzo..." 6
"It's a miracle you're alive, Lorenzo. We did everything we could, ■■■■■ ■■■■■■, ■■■■■■ ■■■■■, ■■■■ ■■■■■■■, they didn't make it..." 5
"How much were the funeral costs? How much is the search for the others gonna run? Give me a number." 4
Lorenzo...!
"■■■■■. ■■■■■. ■■■■■■■■■■. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■." 3
Don't go saying that, Lorenzo. Don't say that!
Lorenzo was barely brought out of his fugue, unaware of time passing at all. Everyone was still muffled. Everyone except the Big Guy. Except Tyr.
Don't let fear win, son. You know what to do.
... Take a deep breath. 2
Knock 'em out with your counter-left.
Inhale.
Exhale.
You've got this.]

Breathe out....
On--]

First thing, Jun was severely injured but being tended to. Trust in the others with him. Second thing, Harumasa having a health attack, coughing blood unable to breathe and near collapse.
Immediately Lighter pulled himself up, shuffling to where Harumasa kept his emergency meds and followed the instructions he was taught, inject in the thigh area and hold for around ten seconds. A temporary fix to something this severe but he was out of the worst of it.
He wouldn't be able to stand, so Lighter helped him up to carry the other man over his back.]
I've got you, boss. Stay with me... We still need you. And so does your brother.
[With Harumasa secured on his back, he walked to the head of the group scoping out where the exit laid. Looking over at Jun laid out on James' shield was another bullet in his heart, but he had to keep it together. He would.
As for the man who took the shot, Lighter knew a dead man when he saw one.]
Ghilley, Wriothesley, Maxima, help lift Jun up and out of here once the bleeding's stopped. Leave Harumasa to me. I'll keep the way forward clear of anyone passing by.
We're not losing anyone today.

well, someone's saying his name, but unfortunately the shotcaller called the mechanics first.
he hears the underpinnings of a plan--get Jun and Harumasa somewhere that's not here and he hears Move in the rumbling snarl of Wriothesley's voice and he thinks, picking through the problems. the elevator might not be down, and if the seals are still underfoot--
they need a car on standby--
Ghilley narrows in on move and he moves. his sword isn't a katana but he holds it with the same discipline, the tip just barely skimming the ground. the gunman might not be alone, after all--but that's a problem to be dealt with if it inserts itself in front of move as he leaves the Rumpus Room, darts through the weird Entrance Hall to this godforsaken wing
and yelps as the breath absolutely slams out of him as he all but runs into a wall of nothing.
he goes back with the momentum he put forward, landing hard (7) with a angry, fox-like shriek--and then he pushes forward, somewhat more tentative this time, slapping at the nothing that barely shimmers with the taste of foul aether and absolutely doesn't budge even when he brings his sword up in a quick cut. he kicks it, frustrated, and uses that to push himself back and off, darting back from whence he came with a sort of dread settling in his gut and prickling along the space behind where he's always sort of... felt his 'friend', so to speak.
there's blood on his face from his quickly healing lip when he re-enters the room. ]
There's a barrier. It stopped me flat, hitting it did nothing. I don't have the magic to try anything like that.
[ sharp, clinical; a soldier's report made from the frustration of someone who was locked the fuck in and has been very quickly knocked right the fuck out of it. ]
1/2
He watches Lighter's piece move four spaces all on its own; examines the board's rules once more; reviews all that's happened within just the past 60 seconds in his memories, and finally listens to Ghilley's report about the barrier. The evil of this place has increased dramatically, and it's affecting even his health. Jun's brother seems to be suffering more from it, which means they're now on a time limit.]
I'm afraid that leaving will not be an option, even if the barrier was not in place to restrict us.
[Reapers' Game, yet not quite. The others are still alive.
Joshua stands up to face everyone else. He's calm and collected despite the situation, and there's a game piece in his hand.]
The rules are clear: once you start the game, you have to finish it. Lighter is now bound as one of the players to Jumanji. I expect Maxima and Ghilley are as well, since their selected pieces are stuck to the board. And... Lighter's piece moved four spaces all on its own. Exactly the amount he rolled with the dice.
The game is now fully in effect, and only four people can play this evil game.
2/2
So, let's play.
[And he sets his piece down on the game board, sealing himself in as the fourth and final player for their game.]
