new app talk
WHO: Yuuki, those he invited, those who found out, and any other nosy people
WHERE: Gen soba shop
WHEN: Mid-late May time is a weird soup
WHAT: Yuuki is making a new app. Time to discuss it.
WARNINGS: Whatever you bring with you.
[Yuuki is just so very thankful Gen's owners were okay with him renting out their entire restaurant for this. They're good people, he likes them.
He has Pod and his Normin checking anyone who comes in to make sure they're on the app and not just trying to sneak in to business that isn't theirs, but he mostly trusts that no one not already on the app like. Cares enough to sneak into this meeting.
Once inside the restaurant, Yuuki just waves from his seat at one of the tables with his laptop.]
Take a seat, we're starting soon.

Yuuki Explains It All
Behind him there's a powerpoint being projected.]
Right, since there's a lot of people here I might as well. I'm Yuuki Shinomiya, researcher Azalea with POKEGO. I'm also a compsci major and the developer of these apps.
[He nods. Chibi, stationed at his laptop, clicks so the slide goes from the title slide to Yuuki's list of apps and games. There's a lot!]
What I am presenting here is not connected to POKEGO. This is a personal project.
[Another click. The slide moves on to one that explains the new app.]
For now, it's Project No Scales. [Since. Libra.] Eventually it's gonna have a name, and it's gonna be a new, better app that isn't Libra. I have the beta already to go, though right now it's just functioning as a regular messaging app and it's on my personal server. That's why I invited who I invited. I need help finishing this.
[He'll pause for questions before progressing.]

First: where are we getting the funds for this? How? I’m assuming since POKEGO’s not involved somebody else is paying out of their own pocket for this, and I can tell you this can get very expensive very fast.
Second: I’m pretty sure we’re going to need a measure of security against Black Order zealots showing up on this app, but at the same time—a lot of the security measures I can think of require breaches of privacy I’m sure none of us want. Any other ideas?
Third: how are we going to get phones with this app to outworlders?

[But he’ll trust that Albarea’s vibe check works well enough even without recognizing another Order member.]
That’s actually another thing I wanted to bring up—Zodiac’s app installs itself. That means it brings god knows what else in terms of data tracking, and if Google was bad about peeking in on your data then Libra could possibly be worse. [A sigh.] I’m pretty sure we’re gonna be using this new app to talk about crimes with names attached, [they’re all so violent,] so—we need a way to shield our data on No Scales from possible spyware, magic or otherwise.
Which is—very paranoid-sounding, now that I’ve said it.

But then he starts talking about the crimes.]
Chibi, number two.
Tink!
[Chibi presses a button on the keyboard and the slideshow is replaced with another. This one is just one slide. In all caps, and bright letters:]
SHUT THE FUCK UP FRIDAY?
NO.
SHUT THE FUCK UP EVERYDAY!
[Yuuki levels a Look at the gathered group. It is very Dan Heng-esque.]
Look. I have done crimes. I got cursed to turn into a cat because I was hacking Zodiac. I keep a folder with pirated college textbooks on my personal server, I've run emulators, all of that. I don't care what people do. But if you use this app to openly discuss crimes that could endanger anyone who uses it, it's not spyware from someone else you're going to have to worry about. It's what I'll do when I find out. Are we clear?

Noctis, who has not paid for a single album in his library since 2010, just nods. Yes, that sounds about right.]
Yep, crystal clear. We'll put that in the EULA at the start in big letters so nobody can miss it.
