[CLOSED] Destruction for Christmas
WHO: Eve, Jun, and Wolfwood
WHERE: Undertown
WHEN: December!
WHAT: Doing this sidequest
WARNINGS: VIOLENCE probably swearing.
[Jun kept himself busy with a lot of work during this month, mostly charity work. Today's mission was yet another one of those errands. Nothing about the description of it sounded too taxing, so he decided to take care of it on a day while Mikleo was visiting Sorey.
So he went to the protest alone, and it became...pretty quickly apparent that this wasn't his forte. He didn't like to be noticed so any passerby who glanced at him made him want to shrink back into the shadows, and his voice was easily drowned out by the voices of the gnomes. It was becoming quite apparent that he was doing little to actually aid the gnomes in their grand goal in this.
...Hm.
He comes upon an idea, and can be overheard asking some gnomes the location of their factory. If the protests weren't enough to complete this mission, then he'll simply do what must be done.]

soulfreetime to the devil in the form of Vergil Vittore is that the devil hates going outside and is totally down to let you borrow his car as long as he doesn't have to go outside.Vash had begged, borrowed, and downright pled for Wolfwood to take Eve to some thing that Vash'd been meant to take her to, some sort of... shortness conference, Wolfwood hadn't paid attention as all the groveling had triggered the fight instinct inside of him (as most things did but who's counting) and at the end of the day, Eve's big sad eyes were a force to be reckoned with and so here Wolfwood was, looking for 'the usual suspect, you'll know!' like that wasn't the most ominous thing a two-legged cactus could say to you.
... it does become quickly apparent who the usual suspect is, though, because in a field of waist-high people, the tit-high man is king. especially when his hair is violently green and he looks like he's trying to ascend out of his skin into a new plain of existence with each rousing cheer and catchy protest tune, and while Jun is one of Wolfwood's least favorite people right now, his misery is funny and so Wolfwood will relish in it like one relaxes in a nice, cold shower until the pelt kicks in and makes you round.
maybe that was a Wolfwood problem, but now Wolfwood is a Jun problem, cigarette in his teeth and hands in his pockets. ]
So I'm guessin' Vash signed up to help you with whatever... alla this is? How's the stilt acquisition initiative goin'?
[ is it better or worse to look at someone you're mad at and smile at them as if nothing's wrong, sunglasses hiding half your expression and small morality chain of a child keeping your voice nice and light?
Wolfwood hopes it's worse, a little. ]

[Eve hadn't wanted to miss out on this, another quest. A ~bounty~ to prove herself after all those city dangers she spent stuck in the house. So Eve very much wanted Wolfwood to go with her once Vash had 'something come up.' Despite her usual stoic face, she's been bouncing her feet on the ride here in hidden excitement.]
[The alternate motive for this sudden switch of guardians was pretty easy to piece together. Wolfwood has been grumpy lately, and it seems Jun might be the reason. Not that Eve understands why. She had been certain that Wolfwood liked Jun before. Was she mistaken?]
[There's a little glance between the two, not terribly well hidden, before Eve waves to Jun. Regardless, she is happy to see him.]
Hello. Are we working together?
no subject
Even worse, Eve was here. He couldn't just disappear right on the spot without upsetting her. ]
... I signed myself up. Their employer replaced them with machines just before the holidays, so I thought to lend a hand. [It was the truth. He looks at Eve, trying to think of a way to word things that would get him out of there quickly before his presence caused any trouble]
Actually, I was just about to leave on an errand. I'm not very good at protest demonstrations, so I thought I'd help out in another way.
[By doing crime. Divine crime. but no one needs to know that.]

Wolfwood feigns like he's fine and dandy, nice and relaxed, not a percolating ball of white-hot anger 30% of the day. ]
Needlenoggin's heart bleeds the same red. He signed up for--what's either the same thing, or a real fun coincidence. [ the truth is nice and safe as far as the outline of the mission goes.
and Divine crime is better than... whatever the fuck a picket line is. there aren't unions in the space future. Wolfwood's probably dealt with unhappy crowds before, but not as the champion of their cause. ]
Is whatever you got in mind better than yellin' rhyming slogans? Because you're taking us if so. I ain't doing this. It won't accomplish shit.
no subject
I heard their jobs were stolen. So that's how it happened?
[She doesn't really understand the full reality of what losing your job just before the holidays means, but she does know this is bad. The holiday is supposed to be a joyful time. Not much joy to be found out here, in the yelling crowd. Only wronged people.]
[Her budding sense of justice is stirred. Even if the siren call of hunting that reward money outshines it, both lead to same thing.]
[If Jun hoped his words would push them away, he will be very disappointed because Eve perks up. Clearly interested.]
Are you going straight to their employer? Can we join?
[Take the message straight to the source.]
no subject
Uuuugh. This is why the Orden said emotional attachments are bad isn't it. They were trying to warn him of this. ]
Not the employer, no. Anything I had to say would fall on deaf ears, I'd imagine.
[He has an eternal debate for a moment, before he decides to share. He'll take a few steps away first, so the gnomes don't overhear.]
I'm going to the factory. If those machines are destroyed, the employer won't have time to replace them before the end of the holiday season. They'll either have to rehire the gnomes, or face financial ruin.
no subject
emotional attachments are bad when you're trying to be an aloof sword and or gun for hire, which is why having them is ultimately a good thing, and why the Orden probably needs to be interrogated for whatever the fuck else they're up to. ]
F[ eve is here eve is here pivot word ] -olks like that generally don't listen to the people they use for their benefit if they're hurt. Little guys like this are expendable for the big goal.
[ whether it's profit or genocide. the concept of kicking the biggest bully on the block in the knees, though, is intensely tempting... ]
Well. Vash can't be too fussed if it's just machines, right.
[ there's a door there that wasn't, and then Wolfwood is pulling the Cross Punisher in all its wrapped up glory from his space between spaces, holding it with two fingers as if it weighed nothing at all. ]
Either we uplift the downtrodden or we topple the oppressor. Win win.
no subject
[Eve listens as the two of them explain how the employer wouldn't be worth bothering. How those types of people use others.]
There's three of us. Surely one of us could get through to him.
[She sounds so certain. It's hard to say if it's because Eve is genuinely that optimistic about being able to impart the importance of listening to your workforce... or she thinks they could threaten him into it. ...Probably the first one.]
[But she follows Jun as he steps away. Absorbing the plan with rapt interest]
Oooh.
[Sabotage. Like some kind of undercover adventure. How exciting!]
I think Vash would understand some property damage.
Did you pack my axe?
no subject
To change a heart like that would require more than what we have at our disposal.
[It wasn't like they know the company owner, or what would actually reach his heart. Clearly if they were unmoved by his worker's protests... frankly, they should be visited by the three ghosts of Christmas than the three of them.
But ah... seems these two are really set on coming. He sighs and gives up, reaching into his bag to pull out his magical hoodie meant to obscure one's identity- offering it to Eve. ]
Fine- put this on, Eve. There might be security cameras and you don't need a criminal record this early in life.
no subject
[ Wolfwood will, helpfully, pull and offer said axe over to Eve because he is a normal human being who has normal standards of normal behavior. ]
Changing a heart like that's either gonna require a deep personal connection or violence on a level I ain't signing off on for you, Evie.
[ sometimes you say the quiet part loud--because you're used to hanging out with a socially shy preteen who's wonderfully curious about the world and you also very carefully construct your sentences to not say 'we could torture him' but fully mean that for people in the know. some part of Wolfwood hopes Eve thinks he means beating the owners up. he'd be happy if it stayed that simple.
they could pass as the of ghosts of Christmas in a pinch! Wolfwood and Jun are fighting for the better specter of death cosplay at any given moment. Eve's here and now, babyyy. ]
Tsk. I had a criminal record this early in life, and I turned out fine. [ he says, shouldering the large cross-shaped gun in its coverings, probably earning their little tree a bit of a wide berth as they continue to prepare the preparations. ]
no subject
People can change though. They just need the right opportunity.
[There's that optimism, loud and clear. But she gets that they aren't going that route today. Who can say though? Perhaps losing a few robots might help build the groundwork for change later in these corporate folks.]
[She also takes the hoodie with her other hand as it is offered, looking a little puzzled.]
But we're not criminals?
[...Right? Those are bad people who do bad things for bad reasons.]
no subject
They can, you're not wrong. May one day they find that opportunity and choose to embrace it.
[Jun just wasn't holding his breath it'd happen before Christmas... or anytime soon. He won't summon his own blade yet, but he will hold up his hand briefly and cast a quick spell. There's a brief light, before his outfit changes from his street clothes to his Shroud uniform. His voice now echoes through a modulator. ]
...Right. [He's not arguing about how fine the man with the giant cross gun turned out. But oh... Eve is now hitting another hard question. Jun will pause, thinking of how to word it.
....Annnnd he comes up with nothing. Screw it. ]
Don't worry about that. Just consider it a precaution.
no subject
[ their personal growth shouldn't come off the misery of others, in Wolfwood's humble opinion, and since it's Christmas, the season apparently makes it a double foul, so! he swallows any lingering resentment of life and its little foibles, focusing instead on getting right, getting even, and getting an eyeful of a familiar white uniform.
Shroud who is Jun who is Shroud.
he stares for a minute. thinks about swatting the guy with the Cross Punisher for one agonizingly tantalizing second. settles on pulling a cigarette out from who knows where and mutters. ] Any other earth shatterin' revelations you wanna trot out while we're here, mintsprig?
[ he sure did turn out. of all the kids who grew up, Wolfwood is one of them. Eve asks the million dollar question and Wolfwood pulls out his lighter, flipping it between his fingers and catching it in a familiar, soothing gesturing. ]
Doin' the right thing and making sure things stay even, fair, and just ain't a crime--but people who want to get ahead by stepping on others'll do everything they can to get that vantage point, even if it means changing the rules for everybody else so no one can get even or hurt them back after they get theirs in the worst way possible. Law sometimes follows the person with a big mouth and bigger pockets--so when it's something like this...
[ he shrugs. ] I'm gonna sleep fine when we're done. Nothin' you should feel bad about either, Evie.
1/2
[Then is immediately distracted by the light and outfit change.]
Whoa!
[The verbal reaction slips out. She vaguely recognizes the outfit, even if she doesn't know the Shroud code name personally. After all, he was around the demon tree and on the network before. More so, she's surprised others have that sudden bright light for changes. Also-]
How did you do that with your voice?
[What is a modulator.]
2/2
[Once she worked for a criminal, and the police were untrustworthy. Then she thought the opposite. Apparently, the truth is once again a lot more complicated.]
[Eve is clearly pondering, silent and solemn. But she does pull the hoodie over her head.]
I want to help the people who are hurting. No matter what.
[...Of course now she needs to pick the axe back up. Life's a struggle.]
no subject
...You're too big for any concealing clothes I could loan you. Try to avoid or destroy the security cameras.
[And that's it. Just focusing on the mission. He's not going to address the elephant in the room, but rather respond to Eve]
It's a voice modulator. The hood is enchanted to obscure the wearer's voice.
[Wolfwood's answer at least was more helpful than Jun's, which he does appreciate. Eve's a good kid, so he expected an answer like that. Were it not for his voice modulator, his tone would be a warm one. ]
I've no doubt you'll help many people, Eve.
