minty misadventures... mintventures?
Well, Lapis can use this for her own purposes. Jinwoo's apartment lacks greenery, besides his one lonely bonsai, and some mint would do nicely - plus she can use it for cooking too. Which is why part of the plan is to collect some for herself, along with getting rid of it.
So she's by his side quickly with the pot, cradling it in her hands as she kneels down next to him; examining the sprigs creeping out of the ground. They really are just popping up everywhere... ]
They really would be, Kaisou would probably just smell of mint in that case... Though I wonder how it got all over the city like this. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a lot of mint growing when we left.
A Well Needed Talk
That they're mentioning Zhongli specifically gives him a very good idea of where this is going.]
I have, though I didn't read my own story as a personal choice.
[He looks between Jinwoo and Lapis.]
Mm... I'm all ears to your worries, and whatever decisions you both come to at the end of this conversation, know that you'll have my full support. Whatever you need, I'll do my best to provide. Even if it's leaving.
no subject
Talking about leaving... She never thought it would happen. The Order picked her up and put her back together, and she felt she owed them her life. That however long this life of hers lasted, they would always have it. Part of her tells her to stop this now, to just go back to what she knows.
But she stays put, glancing between the two men as they speak, before nodding. ]
Thank you, Jusis. [ ... God, this is nerve-wrecking. Talking about it with Jinwoo was hard enough. ]
We... After reading about our past lives, we're. Worried, about how the Order could use that. And if they knew. [ There's no really easy way to say that together they could create a powerful, undead army that could be constantly empowered. ] Our powers on their own would be terrifying, but our past lives abilities together... It could do a lot of damage, if the Order used that.
And I've already started to change, a little, to resemble my past self. [ Which is where her anxiety comes in. Between the fangs and her arms changing, when she uses her powers, it's seeming more inevitable. ]
Calculating Risks
The cafe Jinwoo had picked was easy enough to find, and Ritsuka grins when she spots him waiting just outside it.
"Hey! You weren't waiting long, I hope?"
no subject
At least the smell of mint is nice, but. The last thing we need is for it to take over everything.
I think it's on our lawn, back at my apartment, too.
Someone dug it up recently, but I'm sure it was there before I noticed this sidequest being adver--
[ and then there's a shout from the front door of the house they're digging the mint up from. An angry shout. ]
Ah. Fuck.
no subject
I also support any personal decisions not to read into your own past tale. I did it myself, partially because I was ... [ well ] I'm kind of infamous for being one of the weakest members of the Order. And while I'm... not really entirely bothered by that, I. Wondered if I'd always been that way. If I could ever be better than the one with bad luck and who could hide.
I always wondered why the Order bothered keeping me around. I'm sure you've seen my record. [ his hospital bills. ]
And then I realised. It's as Lapis said. I... have to wonder, if the Order knows. [ the shadows seem to move around him, like they're alive. ] In my past life, I could summon. Armies. The two shadow pets I have. They're just two of millions I used to command. I can tell my powers are getting stronger since I got here, and...
[ he gestures. Again. To Lapis. ]
With a leash on me. And on Lapis.
I worry, greatly, what they might do if they ever get the ability to make us create an army for their own uses.
An army that. If with Lapis' strength applied. Would never die.
I personally would never use this power. It terrifies me. [ but. ]
no subject
[ Or there will be no escape from the mintageddon. ]
Mm, I guess other people have been doing this job too - [ Oh, that's definitely some angry yelling; something about more dumb kids ruining their yard. Lapis perks up, expression entirely unperturbed. ]
Oops. [ O o p s. ]
Hmm, time to leave. [ Time to bamboozle the normies with some shadows cloaking over them, momentarily distracting them as they wonder if there's been a blackout. In the meantime, she'll gently tug Jinwoo along to follow her. Time to escape! ]
Is there a way to be sneaky while trying to gather mint...
no subject
Just airhead things.
"I'm glad to see you're alright.
After we returned from Denmark, I was worried about the people we left behind. There was a whole point where our phones stopped sending messages to people through Libra..."
He laughs a little. Not an amused sound.
"Anyway, let's go inside instead of talking out here. Do you drink coffee, or tea?"
no subject
Coming from Ritsuka, that's saying a lot.
"Either is fine, though I still don't know that much about fancy coffees I guess."
She'd been learning a bit since coming here, but the she hasn't seen the fellow who was introducing her to some of the finer points of coffee as a proper drink rather than just a stimulant in a while.
no subject
Oops is fucking right. He's gonna finish digging up the little sprig, poking it away inside of the bag he's carrying alongside the others--and then in a moment, he's disappearing. Melting in Lapis' grip as he decides to slip into her shadow, curling up and around that darkness as he follows her easily to a place where they won't be chased.
Fortunately, the person who'd shouted gave up the chase early; or simply didn't see what direction the shadowy pair went.
Jinwoo slowly lifts his head up and out of Lapis' shadow, pulling his hood down as he emerges. ]
...I'm not sure about 'sneaky'... but I suppose we could...
Find some way to make a distraction, maybe. So people aren't paying attention to us...
no subject
Distractions, hmm? Well, we already have those.
[ He pulls down his hood, and she can't resist reaching over to lightly smooth back any wayward strands of hair. ]
I have my summon - [ Her bird, not Louis. Louis would get huffy if she summoned him for this. ] - and you have Tank and Igris. They can certainly be distracting.
no subject
Jinwoo drank a lot of coffee--and he wasn't a 'coffee straight black' kind of guy.
"Do you like sweet things, or the strong taste of coffee more? ...What sort of flavors do you like?"
He's going to offer a smile, opening the door to the cafe and quickly stealing one of the quiet tables near the back.
no subject
And, well, there'd been a decided lack of specialty coffeeshops around when humanity was incinerated or the planet bleached. It happens.
"There was a guy running a shop here who was teaching me some stuff but I haven't seen him in a while, so..."
She just shrugs as she follows Jinwoo inside. People come and go, it can't be helped. Though as for her preferences...
"I guess it depends? Like, a strong coffe's probably best with a breakfast or sweets, but for just by itself other flavors are nice too..."
no subject
But she brings up a good point--Tank and Igris were absolutely a great idea, for this. ]
--You're right. Even if a Bear might ruffle people by just appearing--it'll be a big enough distraction that we can get some work done...
[ he's going to step out of her shadow, stretching to his full size as he raises a hand--murmuring that reverberating word that echoed backward off his own voice--arise,
And up came the big bear--glowing blue mane and big soft eyes and all. ]
Think you can run distraction for us? We can give you a tag team buddy.
no subject
Mmhm, a bear walking down the street would be a more pressing concern than the two weirdos picking mint.
[ As Jinwoo summons the bear, Lapis holds out an arm so her summon can form onto it - shadow wrapping and twisting until it forms a large raven spreading its wings, a caw leaving its beak before it hops up onto her shoulder.
And the moment Tank appears, Lapis can't resist reaching over to pet him a little. Oooooh, who's the cutest bear he is- ]
Between Tank and Barone - [ The raven, Barone, squawks and flaps over to perch atop the bears head now. ] - they should be distracting enough.
no subject
The incidents here came far faster, far stronger--scarier, too.
But with that, he's also gotten stronger in the few months here--than he did in ten years, over there. Scary.
He picks up and toys with the cafe menu as he considers the items for a moment. "As for coffee itself, well. There's two ways about it. Some people drink it just to 'wake up', or to get their brains going--which is fine. But.
For those who like the taste of coffee and don't really need the burst of energy--flavored coffee is good for stuff like that, too. Even if people might tell you it's pointless to drink them like that."
He chuckles.
"Sorry, I'm rambling." He doesn't ... get out much.
no subject
Which, well, that's getting into a whole other topic of partings which is probably best left alone for now, so on to coffee instead!
"Oh, it's fine! It's interesting to hear what other people think." Of course Ritsuka would say something like that, but she really does mean it, too. "But yeah, usually most the coffee I had back at Chaldea was more for the caffeine, so I'm still learning about the flavored stuff."
no subject
[ tank makes a crooning, roombing noise, big blue tongue coming out to try to lick her hand--where Jinwoo quietly puts a finger on his nose and pushes it down...
settle, you big oaf. ]
Alright. So you send Barone flying... and I'll get tank to chase after it, making some noise.
Then maybe we can finish cleaning up this street and make a clean getaway.
no subject
Seeing a bear chasing a raven down the street should be enough... Ready, Barone? [ The bird gives another caw, flapping its wings before it takes flight - waiting for Tank to chase after, before flying down the street.
Yeah that. Sure is a sight. And it should be enough of one to keep attention off them for a while. ]
Alright, lets try to be as quick as possible.
[ So it should go well. Hopefully. Though the approaching group of... very drunk carolers doesn't fill her with too much confidence. ]
no subject
He knows there are people trapped here from other worlds, like Ritsuka herself, after all...
"Have you ever had a frappe? Those are my favorite. They're a little on the sweet side--some even have whipped cream and caramel on top."
He smiles a little crookedly as he looks over at the chalk-drawn menu above where the baristas are fussing away, making coffee and portioning snacks...
"Your snack is on me, today. Oh, and--"
he pulls a box from his pocket, sliding it over to Ritsuka.
"...Christmas. A present, from me. You can open it on the 25th, or now, if you'd like."
no subject
"Oh, no, I don't think I've tried one of those yet." Though, his offer to pay makes her pause. "Are you sure? And oh--I didn't get a chance to get something for you yet..."
Which, to be fair, was mostly because of how many people she's been tracking down gifts for. Still, she reaches to take the box, as even if she waits to open it she might as well hold on to it so she doesn't forget or something.
"So maybe I'll wait a bit just to be fair, unless you'd like it if I open it now--"
Of course, no sooner does she touch the box than the strangest feeling surges through her, and an instant later there's now a rather surprised and confused-looking two-tailed fox sitting in Ritsuka's seat.
Hopefully no one else at the cafe has noticed yet.
no subject
Jinwoo doesn't seem bothered by it, though--taking this oppertunity alongside lapis to grab up as many more of the little supernatural sprigs as they can--
...only to be crowded some very drunk carolers who were walking behind them; apparently not even bothered by the bear-and-bird shenanigans going the opposite way.
The singing isn't ... TERRIBLE, but it's certainly a week or two too early for it.
Jinwoo casts her a glance as they start to get close, and he gives a quiet sigh. ]
...Might be time to get out of here. [ ...one of the carolers is wiggling a donation cup at them. God. ]
1/2
That's about all he gets out, until his brain stops STALLING and he realises... what he's looking at. Going. Shock still, blinking slowly as... he stares. And stares. At Ritsu--Fox.
it's a fox
there's a two-tailed fox sitting--
no subject
He always wears that big flowing coat, so he's going to. Quickly cover her with a long flap of it and make for the door. As quickly, and quietly as he can.
While there is most definitely a SHOUT from behind him--
...He's going to take that moment to hop from one shadow to the next, making a quick getaway with his kidnapped friend-now-fox in his arms.
Only coming to a stop when they're about three streets down, behind a fence that's between two businesses. He slides to the floor--finally letting Ritsuka out of his coat.
Both hands moving over his face in utter embarrassment.
"...Oh my god, I'm so sorry."
Because of course.
He immediately blames himself. This was clearly his fault, wasn't it? Wasn't it!
no subject
That said, being suddenly transformed into something else that doesn't even have the same number of feet is, well, a little disorienting. So she's a bit wobbly when let out, and hopefully Jinwoo won't be too annoyed if he accidentally gets smacked in the face with a tail. Then when she hears that apology she abruptly turns around and replies--or at least tries to, as what actually happens is managing to fall half over and make a sound closer to a bark.
Maybe she shouldn't be trying to do two things at once just yet.
After taking a brief moment to collect herself she decides to just stay sitting and focus on talking for now.
"Ah, it's not your fault? This kinda stuff just happens here sometimes, right?"
no subject
But this drunken carol crowd was absolutely not needed, though she supposes it can't always go smoothly. Lapis eyes them with a frown, nodding in agreement as a donation cup is instently thrust in their direction. ]
Yeah, that sounds like the best idea - Hey! [ One of the singers, adorned with reindeer antlers, has decided to commit to the role and is attempting to. Eat the mint in her hands.
She is now trying to get it out of reach and use her shadows to push the reindeer cosplayer away from her. Why do they want the mint so bad. ]
No, no, stop trying to eat this!
no subject
He laughs--of all things, he laughs--because how else should he react? His bad luck hits everyone eventually--Ritsuka was just free of it for so long, until now. "It's how my luck works. Were it anyone else giving you a gift, I'm sure you'd still be person-shaped. Of course a curse piggybacked the gift I got for you."
He drags a hand down his face and... breathes. It's fine. Ritsuka doesn't seem TOO panicked, and it's probably not the end of the world here so...
"You're right about one thing though--this sort of thing DOES happen here. I became a Vampire in a similar way. But.
I.
...Really don't want to see you stay a fox forever. That'd be awful."
no subject
--You know what. Maybe.
Maybe this is enough to call this a job well done. Maybe we should get out of here while we still HAVE some mint to turn in...
no subject
Maybe later she can tell him about the absolute disaster that befell her and Yasuho when trying to help with one of the missions. That really could only be ascribed to (hilariously) abysmal luck.
Still though, she cocks her head at that last remark.
"Oh, is that what I am?" She hasn't really had a chance to properly see herself just yet. Still, she can't help giving a bit of a vulpine shrug anyway. "And I doubt it's permanent. Or at least, not in the way of never being able to change back. Do you know Waver Velvet? He got cursed and turns into a bird sometimes apparently, so I bet it's like that.
"And anyway I've had weirder things happen before, even if it takes a while there's usually a way to do something about it, you know?"
no subject
Yeah, now seems like a good time to go. [ Quit while they're still ahead and all that.
Though as they step away from the drunken carol singers and around the corner, they come across another problem. A very, very pretty woman who is examining the mint; and Lapis, despite momentarily admiring her, knows that encountering her would be a Bad Idea. ]
- Not that way. Not that way. [ Sure Lapis can't sense a deity, but she sure knows when something is Up with a person and she does not want to get into a fight with her. ]
no subject
He wheezes very quietly in the back of his throat. Staring at his. New. Now two-tailed fox friend.
"Yeah, you're a. A fox. But you have more than one tail."
He looks a bit... uncertain, but. Waver Velvet. That isn't a name he knows, at all. So he shakes his head.
"If he's a friend of yours, and has dealt with this sort of thing before.
...Maybe we should give him a call...?"
no subject
She's not just saying that, either, she sounds like it's really what she thinks. Because, well, as she said, she's had weirder things happen, arguably.
At the mention of the tails, however, she tries to crane her head to look, though it's not terribly effective.
"Oh, like a kitsune?" Or a--whatever they're called in Korean, she doesn't recall the term. "... And I guess that might be a good idea, yeah, if I can't figure it out on my own."
She's not going to be figuring it out on her own.
no subject
He sighs gently. Taking up his phone and starting to scroll names on the app--looking for this 'Waver Velvet' person.
"I had no way of knowing, no. But. At the same time, my own curse also came from that place. So I should have known better. The hairpin--it's supposed to protect you. Not turn you into--'Kitsune' is a term that's common in Japan, yes. Back home we call them 'gumiho', fox women who shapeshift between human and beast and tend to. Uh."
...
He continues scrolling on his phone, making a biting motion with his particularly sharp teeth, then pointing towards his belly.
no subject
...Okay, he doesn't have any sort of magic sense at all, but. He can tell, just by glancing at the severe-looking woman, that there's danger there. He almost sees those screens again, marking a high-levelled opponent that might be better avoided than conflicted with. ]
--Yeah, probably. For the best. [ he's gonna move his coat to try to cover the pilfered mint plants, and gesture towards a crosswalk. They can cross the road and get the hell out of dodge, here. Right? Yeah it should be easy.
...Maybe it's a great idea that he'd covered the plants he had, too, because as he waits for the traffic to be clear enough to dash across the road, one particularly loud sports car does the Asshole Thing that careless drivers do. Which is to, you know. Drive closer to the sidewalk than really fucking necessary when there are clearly pedestrians on said sidewalk.
Be it Jinwoo's bad luck or pre-meditation on the driver's part--it results with the fast wheels of said car driving straight through a particularly muddy puddle of sludgy snow and ice runoff that cascades over the pair like a waterfall... ]
no subject
At least in her case there's a certain baseline of just fox to work from.
"Really? I've gotten stuff from there a lot when they do the big sales, and some of it's been kinda weird but nothing like that."
Gacha game protag luck, perhaps."Oh, yeah, there's plenty of stories of evil kitsune in Japan, too, though also good ones that serve Inari. And I know in China there's ones like Daji..."Maybe it'd be a good idea to place that call before they go too far down this rabbit hole.
1/gimme a moment
But there was always the opportunity for something to go wrong.
Lapis notices the car driving too close a split-second too late, and there's not enough time to use her shadows to protect them from the muddy, cold splash of snow and ice.
... ]
no subject
no subject
Fucking. Fine.
It's so fine that in the moment before that asshole driver in their asshole car is out of view, Lapis drags a shadow against it. Is it petty as hell to scratch their car? Yes, but she regrets nothing. ]
okay done
God. And her dress under her jacket was fucking white. ]
Jinwoo. [ Deep breaths. She gives a shake of her hands, trying in vain to get some of the slush off her. ]
Can you summon Igris so he can take the mint, so we can just go home. [ Please just shadow teleport them back Jinwoo, they cannot be walking home like this. ]
no subject
"I feel these sorts of legends all relate to one another--perhaps travelling via word of mouth or some such. ...Ah, I found him. Waver..."
He hovers his thumb over the button and takes a deep breath.
It's fine.
He's a professional, he doesn't get stage fright... talking to a stranger is just.
He presses the call button and waits for an answer...
"Ah, sorry if this was a bad time--I'm here with a friend I believe we share. Ritsuka Fujimaru? ...I think I might have accidentally. Cursed her. She's um.
She's a fox. I don't know what to do."
Re: okay done
He doesn't normally feel cold due to his vampirism, but... he's cold. And wet. And dirty. And everything in him feels horrible. ]
You know what. Yes.
Igris, come out. [ not even a fancy 'arise' spell is cast this time. The knight appears, looking... a bit startled at the mess of his mistress and master.
He hurriedly pushes the plants into Igris' arms. ]
Take those. You know where they're meant to be delivered. [ the shadow shared his knowledge, after all. ]
Home is definitely where I want to be.
I'm going to sit in the bath for at least a half hour.
no subject
She does manage to give Igris a small wave as he is handed the task of hauling off the mint, before she shivers and winces when she can feel the mud squelch in her boots. Ugh it's seeping through her tights- ]
Can you teleport us back, please say you can teleport us back. I don't want us to walk there like this.
[ It's cold and miserable and they cannot be seen like this. ]
Also we're both sitting in the bath for a least half an hour, it can fit us both.
no subject
[ as an arm moves to wrap around her--the sludgy mess being one they'll now share--the shadows don't take long to curl around them from their feet.
And regardless of who is watching, honestly--the pair disappears from the wet and snowy street.
A knight off to deliver the plants.
And straight into the shadowy hallway of Jinwoo's apartment is where the pair will soon appear--not soon enough to get the wet and dirt-caked clothing the hell off as they can spell today's mission--at least--as a moderate success. ]
