[Intro] My mom Julieta, here's her deal

When Julieta wakes up, she looks around at the absolutely massive kitchen she suddenly found herself in, her mortar and pestle next to her head, and she was sitting on a stool. No wonder she was so uncomfortable! However, as sleep left her mind more and more, she realized several things very quickly.

This is not her kitchen.

This is not Casita.

Her family is not here.

Is she still dreaming? She pinches herself and then winces.

She takes a deep breath trying to calm down. She takes a few more to be sure. Alright, time to think Julieta. She begins pacing in the giant kitchen. She is in a kitchen, not only is she in a kitchen but there are enough supplies to feed the entire Encanto. She had her mortar and pestle, and her apron and dress, which is not what she went to bed in, to be sure.

Julieta examined all the instruments in the kitchen, this was... not a traditional kitchen. Pots, pans, those were the same sure, but the whole thing was incredibly impersonal, stainless steel everywhere.

... Alright, she couldn't resist liking the oven.

She examined everything, opening all the doors and discovering she now quite liked the size of the refrigerator as well.

Maybe this was a dream! DOUBLE ovens with stovetops! Aaaah not a dream, heaven!

Still, she needed to figure out what to do. After examining everything, she found a door. Rather than it opening it up to a building, she immediately was faced with a long corridor going off in either direction.

She tapped her lips in thought, closing her eyes. Alright, she had food, she had water, the sinks were working, she checked. So she could make a plan if this took several days. The first rule of being lost was to stay put.

Were there others in this place? Were there wild animals? Maybe monsters or spirits? Her fingers tapped along her lips as she kept thinking. She then snapped her fingers, a plan in mind. At the very least, she should have something ready if she got hurt or found someone who was. Plus, she couldn't leave the room to venture out without food. She had no idea what was out there.

Grabbing a sack of flour, she propped open the door to the kitchen and got to work cooking, she had already categorized what food she recognized and what she didn't. She'd save the food she didn't know for last for rations if needed. Plus, she would need to actually cook something for her Gift to work. She chose recipes that would yield a lot of results with few ingredients. Arepas were the obvious choice.

Julieta rolled up her sleeves and washed her hands to get to work.

Soon, smells of food filled the air and Julieta was glancing at the door every now and then. She didn't know if she would attract help or harm, she glanced over at the frying pans and knives she had at the ready. She wasn't even sure this would attract any company at all, but she would give it a day or two before she even ventured out into the labyrinth. And she'd have cooked food that could heal her if needed. She heard footsteps and moved to slicing vegetables so she could have a knife in hand, not that she knew how to use it for anything OTHER than cooking but she didn't know who just walked in. She kept her back turned for the moment, trying to stay calm and casual.

"¡Hola! You're just in time, the food is almost ready, here come in, come in."

- and I just press this button here? [Someone with her mentions that she's already recording and Julieta smiles.] Gracias, no no, thank you for showing me how to use this. Please enjoy the aborrajados, eat eat. This won't take me long.

[Finally Julieta turns to look at the camera.]

¡Hola! My name is Julieta Madrigal, I am new to this city. [... Some... how. No one has answers on that yet.] Por favor I am looking for my family.

We are a very big family, so listing them all may take a while, so if you just happen to know someone with the last name Madrigal, and point me in their direction, or them to mine, I would be very grateful.

[The person with Julieta asks if she has anymore and Julieta pulls another bit of food from her pocket, handing it to them.] Of course of course, eat eat.

How have you both been here for a month?

[Isabela is still learning herself, but it didn't take her long to pick up the basics. So when she sees her mom? She immediately reaches out.]

Thank goodness you're here. A lot's happened, but-- it's still nothing we can't handle.

I don't know, Mamá. A month ago I ended up in a weird maze, and then was in this city for a while... and now the rest of you are here.

[Which she is glad for! Which she isn't sure she should be but mom ;A;]

ISA!¡Mi vida!

[All her babies are here! She lets out a sigh of relief, especially since Isabella can keep such a cool head.]

Your sister is coming to get me and then we can figure out whatever is going on. Are you alright? You're not hurt, are you? Luisa said you and she arrived on the same day. I'm sorry I'm late.

We need to figure out what is even going on.

Okay okay okay. [She closes her eyes and wrings her hands in thought. Julieta takes a deep breath to calm down.]

We have Casita, we have your Tío Bruno, Isabella, Dolores, Luisa, you, and myself. [While they ALL had tendencies towards dramatics, it was honestly some of the cooler heads of the family.]

So why suddenly all of us? Did you Tío Bruno see this happening, by any chance?

Isabella is here too?

[She looks over to the door.]

So that's what this place is? A maze? [Where were Bruno's rats when you needed them? Julieta watches as the arepa... does... nothing for Luisa's scratches. Oh no, was she without her Gift once more? She presses her lips together and begins wringing her hands.]

But you found me, mi vida, do you know how to get out of here? I have things ready for the trip out. Is it dangerous out there?

No-- no, I'm fine. Really! There was nothing that could hurt me in that weird "labyrinth" anyway. But you should definitely check on Luisa.

[Because she can't be totally sure Luisa will admit it on her own, even if it's just because she's so used to not having to worry about it.]

I know. I'm still wrapping my head around a lot of things. But once we're all together I'm sure things will start falling into place.

I'm afraid my Gift is gone again, I fed Luisa as soon as she found me in the maze but the scratches didn't heal at all.

[Not that Julieta doesn't have a ridiculous knowledge of herbs and medicines regardless of her Gift, but she worries for her girls.]

What about you, mi amor? Is your gift gone as well?

This city is so massive. After Luisa, I went to this... mall thing for supplies. I have never seen a city like this before. [Or... at all except in books, but... ya know, semantics.] Your father would have adored exploring this place. [Agustin was ALL ABOUT new things to explore and try out.]

[ She nods. ] Yeah. So is Mirabel, and Dolores, and Tío Bruno, but they've been here a while longer.

I guess a lot of people end up in a maze when they first arrive here, but it actually leads out to a city. That's where everyone else is. It...hasn't been so bad so far [ other than her maze experience, but small details ] but I'm still learning more about the city.

But I can explain more after we get out. [ She takes one of her mother's hands. ] I should be able to find where I came in through, so we can go that way.

[Isabela had hoped that she wouldn't have to admit it so soon, but at the same time-- she knew that if something was wrong with her Gift, then there was a good chance that it might come to affect the others too; even if not now.]

It's not... it's not gone... but it's grown a lot weaker. I can't use it the way I did before.

[The thought of her dad running around this city makes her smile softly. It's so easy to picture it.]

...you're right. He would love it here. And who knows... maybe one day he'll get to see it. I just-- hope he doesn't try too hard to find it.

[So many of us... she was glad they were all together, certainly, but why? What on Earth was going on?]

Alright, let me grab a few things. [She grabbed the flour sack that she had emptied and put in the food she had been able to make she then put a towel down between the food and atop the towel, matches, a knife, and three lumps of charcoal. She looked around the kitchen for anything else and immediately grabbed her mortar and pestle, as she knew that was hers from home.]

Alright, let's go.

We can mark our path with the charcoal if we need to.

Weakened but not gone... interesante. [Did that mean hers was weakened, not gone, then?]

Ai, knowing your papá, he will do exactly that. [She chuckled, her heart aching for his support right now. She takes a deep breath.] It's okay, mi amor. We've gotten by without our gifts before, we can and will again. Doesn't make your thumb any less green.

Mira mentioned Casita is here, we can still plant some cactuses and succulents.

[ Luisa waits, and while she knows there were supplies and things out in the city - and back in Casita as well - it does help having a few things ready. Especially since this is still a maze, and while she's pretty sure she remembers where she'd come from, it will still take a bit of time to reach the entrance.

Once Julieta is ready, she instinctively reaches to take the sack from her mother. ]

I'm not sure - they took someone who was dead in their world, and brought him back to life, so there doesn't seem to be any reason why?

Tío Bruno tried to use his visions to see if there was a way out, but they came out... wrong? Like this place did something to his Gift. He saw a net and some electric mice...

[They're all scattered right now. There's so much that's uncertain-- and each of them had their own fears and worries to contend with. Including her mom. Isabela couldn't imagine what she was going through right now. Her parents were so close. Being separated... she knows her mother has to be hurting more than she can say. That's why she wants to try and help carry some of that weight.]

He'll be okay, I know he will. And so will we. If nothing else, this will be one amazing story to tell him when we all get back.

[Her mother's support meant everything and she was right. She lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.]

Mamá... thank you. I'd like that-- a lot.

You can talk to someone easily enough through these. What do you do if you invite someone dangerous over?

[Seriously, being sociable like a normal human being is just asking for trouble.]

Oh you're the mom to three of them, I see!

[FINALLY he's not the only teen with a parent on the app. There's some happiness in knowing he's not the only one who has to deal with that]

Your daughters are great. They've been really nice to me when I've spoken to them. And your brother's Bruno's rat show is really entertaining.

Me too!! All the kids started showing up and I was just I have had almost no experience here, I have no idea what I'm doing, what if I set them on fire somehow?!! because I don't know!! Is it easy to set kids on fire? I am very much not qualified for this!!!

[Bruno most of them are grown adults now, it's not this bad. But he still doesn't want to set your kids on fire, Julieta! Somehow. ]

Okay um, best I can guess? We got sucked into some sort of portal hole and now we're here. [When the seer of your family offers a big fat hell if I know about something, you know it's bad. ] There are these people called Zodiac who study it? I've tried to use my gift to figure out how to get out of here but it's not working right.

[Which at least partially answers the unasked question.]

I'm okay. This place has a lot of people in it, but Castia showed up randomly too so...that's a little beter than the tiny appartment I had with Mibrael and Dolores for the last month.

[They have to figure out whatever is going on. They're just fortunate they're all together. Madrigals worked best as a unit. She smiles as Isabella tries to assure her that Agustin will be okay. And she's right, he will be. That was one of the many things she loved about him, things like accidents and beestings and everything in between never stopped him when he was determined. He could be swollen head to toe, if someone in the family needed him, he'd be there.

She tries not to think about how empty her room is going to feel when they are properly situated. She tries not to think about how she gained back her brother to not have her sister right now. Right now, her children, niece, and brother need her. That, above all else, is what needs to be focused on.]

I would like that too, Isa. When Mira comes and gets me, we'll stop by the market, I'll make a big, big meal for all of us so we can have dinner together. What would you like especially, mi vida?

Ah sí I know, the gorgeous family resemblance is strong, no? [She winks.]

My girls are incredible, and Dolores too. Madrigals make incredible women.

Ah, is he sharing his telenovelas? He mentioned them, I've never seen them myself. [Because always cooking and rats are FORBIDDEN in her kitchen.]

Woah woah woah, deep breath, Bruno. [Oh gosh, her poor baby bro.]

First of all, you lucked out because the least likely to ever set fire to anything are Dolores, Isa, and Luisa. [Sorry, Mira, she saw what happened with the decorations you made for Antonio's party.] Now, if Camilo or Agustin were here, then you might have to worry about random fires.

Second... [She worries her lip at the fact that Bruno doesn't know anything. But that isn't his fault. She wrings her hands in thought.] Alright, some... sort of portal in the Casita, maybe? So Agustin should be falling through it any second. [Because, well, he's him.] Zodiac? This is the first I've heard of them. Can we talk to them?

Last, I'll make dinner. Then we can all talk about what we know, what we've seen. Maybe then we can see if there's a pattern, something we all did the same that caused this or something. Besides, no one thinks well on an empty stomach.

It's okay, mija, I got it. [She filled Luisa's hand with her own instead.] This way, we can't be suddenly separated by anything. If I get tired you can hold it, okay?

[She knew Luisa could carry it, even if she didn't have her gift, she most definitely could handle this if Julieta could. But that didn't mean she should HAVE to. She turned off everything to make sure a fire wouldn't start in the maze and stepped out of the kitchen.]

Okay, lead the way.

Dead? [Her eyes widen.] They... this place can bring back the dead? [She takes a breath.] Not like La Llorona right, but... but actually back alive?

¿Qué? A net and electric mice? [Even for Bruno that's... an odd one. Maybe he's dipped too much into his telenovelas?]

Did... this electric mouse vision come true?

This is very impersonal, no? I can't even hear your voice or see your face.

I suppose it depends on what the dangerous person would want. [In other words, her family IS pretty dangerous in the wrong light, Pepá alone was no joke never mind Isabella and Luisa and now Antonio's gifts.]

Oh, uh... [ She hesitates for a moment, almost like she was a bit lost if she wasn't carrying something. But she gently squeezes her mother's hand. ]

Okay. I've got you, Mamá.

[ She hadn't seen or run into anything that seemed dangerous so far. But if there was something, she could protect her mother. ]
