Because he has to admit, he's strongly tempted to try as well. He's no scholar of this kind of thing, unfortunately, but even getting his head around something as simple as how the lights here work could prove revolutionary back in Fodlan or Almyra. It's just a matter of whether they'd even have the tools to build what's needed, back home.
