[Amal is dressed a little differently today. Repping Thavnairian weave and a ribbon in his hair, he's seemingly conquered the incredible bedhead he's nursed for several weeks.]

Hey everyone! Did you think you were rid of me? Sorry to disappoint! Being exceptionally difficult to get rid of is one of my many talents, as it turns out.

My birds are acting like I was dead instead of asleep, when I don't even remember going to bed. But I remember a lot of other things—it was like I was home. Like I never left. Maybe... my body was here while my soul was there? I have no idea, but I'm awake now, and I have every reason to believe what I saw happen... uh, happened.

So. What'd I miss?

[A pause.]

Oh, and what's a BBL? I woke up to a bunch of texts from work asking if I'd 'recovered' yet.

[Amal gets it, he gets how it is. You gotta let them nerds feed on knowledge or they'll do stupid things in the pursuit of it.]

There's more questions than answers and I have a feeling the only way we're gonna learn anything is if we find it ourselves. Zodiac don't seem interested in sharing.

[He scoffs gently.]

I don't want demons, either. I just got finished dealing with one back home like... a few months ago. But this won't make demons happen, I'll be careful.

If Zodiac does divulge anything, it'll be offhandedly and without emphasis so that no one understands how severe the situation is. [Not that it's a playbook he also reads from...] We're the only ones who can take care of ourselves.

At least you know the danger. Uninvited demons are a scourge all the worlds over. [The ones you invite are different.] If you mess up, I'm going to be the one they call to deal with it, so you best be careful. I can get cranky if I'm in the middle of my skincare routine.

[Varian makes a frustrated noise in the back of his throat.]

Ugh, sounds about right. It's always the people most in power who end up less able or willing to help the people who need it most.

[He's forever going to be a Bitter Betty about Fredrick- he might be part of the royal court now, but he stands by his right to never forgive the King for fucking up so badly. ]

They really are. The one back home tried to kill literally everything. She was the worst. [He snorts in light amusement- that's the sort of thing Eugene would say and the familiarity is oddly comforting.] Well, I wouldn't want to interrupt something so important.

It sure seems that way.

[He knows there are nobles and people in power who are trying their best, but that doesn't mean he's forgiven them for making him into something of their little war puppet during the liberation of Ala Mhigo.]

She sounds like the worst. I had to deal with a demon like that wanting to devour the world, too. It was so obnoxious.

[The dashing rogue streak runs strong in Amal. He even had a bounty on his head until recently!]

It is important. You're probably, what... [he squints at the screen] Sixteen-ish years old, yeah? Give it about ten years, and you'll find all that happy little fuzz on your cheeks is gone, and your skin starts to feel like sandpaper if you so much as forget to moisturize it once. Sleep wrong on your pillow and you'll break out like nothing else.

Obnoxious would be a way to describe her. He disguised herself as this creepy little ghost girl for a while. She came into my dream once, it was the worst.

[That's definitely some primo dashing rogue advice there, and that snort turns into a genuine little laugh.]

You sound just like my friend back home. He has about five different moisturizers and he has about twenty hair-care regimes he follows every day. He's convinced it's gonna stop the ageing process in its tracks.

Gods, seriously? That's crossing a line. Nasty.

[If he was a demon he would not be intruding upon the dreams of teenage boys. HE KNOWS BETTER.]

Ha! I've given up on any hair treatments, mine does what it wants. But don't knock milk baths until you've tried one. It makes your skin feel like silk sheets.

My hometown was the birthplace of alchemy, so I know a thing or two, I think.

She was very nasty all the time.

[Those are sanctified places!! Or...you know, opposite of that. But regardless, no one should be looking in there!!!]

But doesn't it get kinda smelly pretty quickly? What if it curdles?

[But Amal, that's the magic word right there. He brightens up considerably. ]

I love alchemy!!!! It's my favourite thing in the whole world!!! What sort of things did you get to learn?

Milk only curdles if it's going bad. The key is fresh milk, though even if it's been in your icebox for a week, it's probably fine... The food here is altered so everything lasts longer. I heard they boil it really fast and then bottle it.

[Good ol' pasteurization, which is not something they have on Eorzea, lol.

Oh? Did he stumble on a Special Interest? His is knives, but he will absolutely take advantage of this in order to befriend a kid.]

Is that so? I learned what good potions for your health and aether look and taste like. I could probably make some basic ones if I had the ingredients in front of me. You see, I spent a lot of time in the markets where people sold all kinds of things-- salves to heal wounds, tonics for your hair, tea for your love life... Some people are trying to help, but some are only in it to harm others. They're not real alchemists at all.

But, you said it's your favorite thing. I bet you know way more than someone who just dabbled around in the basics!

Yeah, I saw the icebox in my apartment! It was amazing, it's nothing like I've seen back home. [Which is literally a box. With ice in it. ] I'm gonna have to test to see how long it can keep food in, if that's the case.

[And that's how Varian did science experiments on his fridge. ]

Pfft, right? those people are just like...snail oil salesmen, it's different and it causes more harm than good. Health potions are good though! It's tricky to get the right herbs to make sure you don't...hah, kill anyone.

[Because that would be...bad. He chuckles, rubbing the back of his head.]

I have been doing it for as long as I remember. I've got a lot of chemical compounds I created all of my own. Trying to get supplies to make more here is...tricky, but I'm hoping if nothing else I can figure out some good substitutions for them.

[Technology has to start somewhere.] A long time. Too long, if the salad at the back of mine was any indication...

[Yep... he likes this kid.] It is. There's a dosage. Too much of a good thing and you might knock someone out.

Damn, sounds like you're the expert around here. I admit, I've been doing a little of the same—finding substitutions for things that I'm familiar with. But it's mostly applied to cooking, not uh... potion making. The good news is, there's a lot of places in Undertown that will be able to help you out. For the rarer ingredients you might have to do some exploring yourself, but you should at least be able to find a starting point.

Oh wow, really? Was the salad still edible?

[Varian here asking the IMPORTANT questions.

Varian's just loving all this validation, and he looks even more excited at the prospect of a place he can get supplies! ]

Oh wow, really?! I'm so gonna try that out. Are they weird about who they sell things to? Because when I tried to get supplies here in the city I was told I was [finger quotes time] "too young to be buying things like that" which is so dumb. I know how to use it! It's literally my job!

[But this is important too!]

What sort of things do you cook?

Let's just say that calling it a salad is a generous description... I had to throw it out.

Not in my experience, but you are a little younger than me. Maybe wear some tall boots or something when you go in so you can pass as a short eighteen instead of a tall fifteen.

[He shrugs.]

That's just how things are here. You could go drinking and adventuring at your age on my world, but gods forbid you try to do anything by yourself here if you're that young. And, like, I get it, because—no offense—you are very young, and it's important to keep you out of trouble. But a kid trained in weaponry who deals with fighting monsters on the daily is going to be a little more mature and experienced than a kid who grew up in Kaisou. How do you know you're a real adult if you haven't wrestled a giant, rabid animal trying to claw your face off?

[Anyway--]

Spicy food! My cabinet is full of different kinds of curry powder, garam masala, cumin, coriander, garlic, things like that... I've picked up some other things along the way, like soy sauce and sweet rice wine, but it's my homeland's cooking that I like making the most.

Ouch, definitely not edible, then.

[He's making a solid mental note that the ice boxes don't keep food FOREVER. Amal probably saved a teenager from giving himself food poisoning!]

I'm sixteen!! [So much whining, sorry, Amal, he's a teenager. ] I'm just...short.

I could drink in MY world! No one cared!!! It was normal! And seriously! I fought an actual demon back home, but can I buy a vial of hydrochloric acid for legitimate scientific reasons? Noooo. I don't get it. When did everyone decide that my age was too young for stuff?

[It's one of the things about the future that genuinely baffles him!]

Oh, wow, some of those things are...definitely nothing I've heard of before. Is it good?

[Thank goodness.]

Oh, I was close! I get it, man. People who look like me on my world are usually three ya—er, feet taller. It's annoying...

[He tries to stifle a laugh.]

It's because everyone who grows up on Earth is soft. They aren't used to fighting for their lives every time they step outside city limits. The only real danger I can see comes from other people. That's why they don't trust you with the fancy acid. Someone ruined it for everyone else ages ago because they weren't smart enough and melted their own face off or something.

[To be fair, kids do stupid shit and Amal is no exception, but he was fucking with tigers and huge monkeys, not alchemical substances.]

It's the best! If you stay in touch I'll send you some food sometime. I always make too much... used to cooking for ten people, if I cook at all.

[Nice save, Amal, Varian clearly finds some common ground there.]

God, I know. Short people exist, everyone!!! It's nothing new.

[It's so rude, gosh wow!!!]

But I'm from Earth! Okay, so it's like...two hundred years in the past compared to this time period, but still Earth! So yeah, it really does sound like something stupid happened in the past and now that's ruined it for everyone. Guess I'm gonna have to find other ways to get what I need for my work.

[He says that like he isn't the sort of person who's already a living cautionary tale for everything.]

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. Fern doesn't eat, so he wouldn't use it, but me and Rapuznel would. Ruddiger and Pascal too.

[He looks a little surprised.]

You are? Huh, I didn't expect that... Everyone else I've met from Earth has been very adamant about demons, dragons, and everything else not existing. Even taking time passing into account, this place is so... mundane... Clearly you're from the cooler Earth.

Anyway, good luck with that. I'm better at getting weapons than chemicals—I admit I don't look like the most trustworthy guy out there.

[Amal really shouldn't be enabling him, but here we are.]

Really? I mean... I'd prefer if they didn't exist back home. The last three years of my life would have been considerably easy if Zhan Tiri hadn't existed. I'm not sure how cooler it was. I mean, she was...real bad.

[She put her grubby little tentacles into everything, she was the WORST.]

[People DO trust him, which he'd rather they wouldn't. He's used it to his advantage before and that was...not something he'd like to repeat.]

I get it, I do. But you have to realize... they don't do alchemy the same way you and I know it. Everything is sterile and bland and there's no sense of wonder about anything... I've been to the end of the universe and back and nothing compares to a world that tests your imagination, where tall tales are likely and heroes are real. There's no magic, metaphorical or otherwise. There's no adventure.

You should never mistake having an easy life for having a fulfilling one. Maybe the road you took to get here was harder than it should have been—I've been there—but the things you learn could help you save someone else one day.

[But first Varian might fuck up and accidentally summon a world full of dinosaurs... Lessons must be learned, here.]

Oh wow, that's....bad. That sounds- just awful. [Because as much as he really did not enjoy the whole...demon trying to literally destroy his homeland and everyone in it, being in a world where there was no imagination, no adventure...well.] If you don't have a spark of imagination then...nothing new could exist.

I helped people back home. I...don't think I can ever even the scales for...the past, but I've been trying to make up for it.

[Sometimes lessons have to be learned multiple times over and that's just how it is! He offers a smile.]

It's okay, I don't mind. Uh- do you need...food?

I mean, I could be wrong. Maybe there is adventure here, but how can anyone expect to find it when they can't see the magic around them? It's different when... they awaken, or whatever you call it when people suddenly get Zodiac in their lives and start seeing elf ears and witch hats... We may as well not exist to them before then. [He sighs.] I think innovation and creativity are taken for granted in this world.

[Varian sounds like he has some personal experience with atonement. It was just a feeling Amal had, but now he's certain they have that in common.]

Part of moving away from the bad is realizing some things can't be made right. And that's normal. That doesn't mean you've failed. The most important thing is that you're trying, and even if you fall down on the way, you get up and keep walking forward.

[He returns the smile. There's some sadness behind it, but he doesn't elaborate. A bit much for a casual conversation, that.]

I should probably consider emptying the icebox, at least. Normally I'd walk up the street to the carts, but I'm a bit sore from my last big fight.

Yeah that's...really weird. I have a friend who's...one of those. I was told to just treat it like she's a completely different person to the one I know back home. It's just...cosmic weirdness that's ended up with her like that. But I still don't understand how they suddenly get...yeah awakened is a good word- how they get awakened. Like...how does Zodiac do it? Why don't they do it to everyone? What makes them choose?

[Varian sure knows a lot about atonement. Not enough, sometimes, he feels, perfectionist that he is. ]

Yeah...I've heard that one, too. And I'm trying. I guess I'm still...working on that part. On the walking forward.

[Because oh boy does he try, but he still can't stop himself from looking back.]

Oh? What- um- what did you fight? If you don't mind me asking?

[Amal is quiet for a moment as he thinks on it. Alphinaud and Raha... yeah, they're not the same people. They're like the friends he had, plus a little more. He's always tried to be respectful of that, and not push more onto them than they are willing to receive.]

Maybe Zodiac doesn't choose at all. Maybe they just keep an eye on everyone, knowing that it's something that can happen, and one day—bam. Someone walks out of their apartment and sees a guy flying to work and freaks out, and then Zodiac sends a thing onto their phone.

[It seems as likely as anything.]

It's hard to master something you've only just started. Keep going.

[Forge ahead, as he had been told.]

[What is a good question, but he focuses on the who.]

He was a real force of nature. A man who was hollow on the inside, who only lived for the hunt. I was the prey he hunted. He had never known kindness, nor did he show it to others. He was so hollow even death couldn't keep its hold on him... He tried to make me into something I was not, and in the end, I still don't know if I was what he wanted.

Still... he flew across the universe to help me defeat a greater foe. Even if it was just so that we could fight one last time, he deserves to be recognized for that.

[He winces and rubs at his stomach unseen, out of frame of the camera. He's so conflicted about how things with Zenos ended. He really disliked the guy, but he could pity him, too.]

The only reason I lived through it is because I had friends to call me back. He had no one at all, and that was how he wanted it...

[Varian took Fern's suggestion to heart and has been doing much the same. Catalina is a lot younger than him, and as much as he desperately misses her, he knows the one here isn't the same as the Catalina back home. It's hard, it's so hard, but he's been trying. ]

...I guess that's possible. It happens to so many people, I guess it would make sense they'd look for signs that things...changed.

[He nods at the keep trying comment. That's what he's been doing. He just ends up stumbling a lot along the way. He's at least picking himself up afterwards, even with the occasional bouts of maudlin that come with it. ]

Oh wow, that's...yeah, he sounds really awful. I'm sorry that you went through that. [And that last part- hrm. That's...important. That settles somewhere in his chest.] Everyone should have a chance to do some right by the mistakes they made. However bad they were.

Yeah. Having people to fall back on really does make the difference between going back to the light or falling deeper into darkness.

Right... I think this has been happening for a while, considering how much weird stuff is established here—the shops in Undertown, for example. I don't know of anyone like me who showed up before a year and a half ago, though. That part is new.

[He's still rubbing at that scar... It'll be a couple weeks before he's ready to whoop ass again, and that's with all the best healers he knows working on him and then bedrest here... He really ought to be dead.]

... I think so, too. Ultimately, he realized that if he wanted anything, he had to connect with other people, even if it was... brief.

[Fuck that lady and he hasn't even met her but yeah he'd be in camp "push her off a tower".]

I've had some long, lonely walks in my time... but the thing about being alone in the darkness is that you can hear the voices of your friends even clearer.

Right? It doesn't sound like anything is new and that's...concerning. Maybe this has always been happening.

[Varian catches the movement, frowning- he kind of wants to ask about it but he doesn't know if it would be opening up a can of worms that Amal doesn't want to discuss. He's definitely making a mental note of that one, though.]

Yeah, that's...uh. A big realisation to have and it sometimes takes a while to get there. Sometimes takes a while to hear those voices, too.
