Around the city

[Going from the front lines of a large war to a literal nightmare to the interior of his mental vault has been bad times, enough so that when Fern finally exits his labyrinth he finds being upended in a world that looks distinctly un-post-apocalyptic is actually an improvement to his previous situation. There aren't any jerks who've stolen his identity, and there aren't any bigger jerks who pretended to be family but were only using him, so he's already in a much better place.

It can't last though, and he still has a lot of restless anger he needs to get out, somehow. He needs to start wrecking things, he still feels like complete garbage after all the problems he got yanked away from. But maybe he isn't the only one who showed up here? If that's the case, then all he needs to do is hunt the others down, then he can totally get the jump on Finn or whoever and beat the stuffing out of them until he feels better. Perfect plan!

So he wanders the city aimlessly, looking like a completely normal human boy with a bear hat to citizens who haven't been exposed to the paranormal, and to those who have, looking very much like some kind of horrifying pile of grass in the rough shape of a person. When he sees your character he doesn't hesitate in racing over to them, so good luck with that.]

Hey dude! You seen any giant cake robots around? Or Gumball Guardians?

[Asking about Finn will just send him into a self-loathing rage, and besides, the robots and guardians are a lot bigger and easier to spot.]

uh ok so i get this is some alternate universe biz
i've been through that before so it's whatevs, nothing new to me
but it's real donked
i've never seen so many humans just walking around like they didn't get totes extinct a thousand years ago or anything
not sure i'm ever gonna get used to this

Um. [Hooooo boy.] I'm happy to help you out, make sure everyone can get home, but... I don't really got much to go back to.

[He shrugs ambiguously.]

I might as well just stay here.

[The thought that some people might not want to get out and go home isn't one that ever occurred to him. His brow furrows softly as he processes this. ]

I'm...sorry. Is it- do you want to stay here? I- I mean if not maybe we could find you another home? If yours isn't viable. Corona's pretty nice, and weird? You'd...you'd probably be okay there?

[He shakes his head. Nope, not unless he wants to go back and face a war he helped start. Killing Finn might be nice, but that's about all.

He isn't expecting to hear another offer, one like living at his apartment, but way more serious. Fern's eyes widen and he stares in shock.]

Dude. I - I dunno, man. [He rubs the back of his head awkwardly.] I haven't thought about what I wanna do. Whether that's staying here or - or living somewhere else.

[It was an impulsive act and Varian's still not sure why he just blurted it out. Maybe it's because he wants Fern to be somewhere safe and he doesn't yet trust that Kaisou is safe. Maybe it's because he plans on getting out of here fast and a part of him doesn't want to say goodbye yet. Maybe it's a mixture of both. He's not sure. Everything about Fern is confusing. ]

That's- that's fair. I- I mean you don't have to decide right away. [Oh man, what was he thinking, just saying that like a crazy person?] Um- just-just something to think about?

[Fern is starting to feel that same confusion. This is a big offer, a huge one, and it's definitely going to take some time for him to wrap his head around it. Getting pulled into a whole new universe is one thing, but going to a new one willingly... woof, that's a big step.]

Sure, yeah. [That's all he needs to do, think about it, easy peasy!] I'll do that, and when I figure out what I wanna do I'll tell you. Okay?

[Varian still feels like he's managed a proper social faux pas here, but he's just gonna...charge on ahead here. It's fine, he smiles awkwardly.]
