Uh, explanations please? First this weird app showed up on my phone. And then I was setting up my telescope and what just happened to the sky? Because I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if it looked like that before.

[Danny still had very little idea of what was going on, but he suspected that world travel would be difficult. ]

I don't need luck, I've got science! That means I have math and careful research on my side.

Hey, science rules! But what kind of math do you need to cross dimensions?

Science does rule, thanks for noticing! So many people are all about magic and they miss out on how good science is because of it.

[Oh, Danny, you've asked it now.]

OH! Hang on, let me write it down for you!

[And lo he switches to text and adds a lot of insane, complicated math that goes on and on and on and on.

Not me. Until today I didn't even think magic was real.

[Danny takes a moment to try and take all of that in.]

Uh... I think this might be a little beyond me at the moment.

Lucky! Magic is nothing but a pain back home, I wish I could live my life without it.

[It would be so much easier, wow!]

Oh. Well- that-that's okay! It's a work in progress anyway. I don't have it all figured out on how to leave this world yet.

Its only been a day, and I'm already regretting that its a thing now.

Hey, I'm totally interested if you did manage to get it to work. It must be so cool to see other worlds.

[And then Danny winces, as a strange memory comes into his head.

He was walking into a dark place, with wires and cords under his feet. With the one hand held out for balance he could feel a cool metal surface.

"You know what?," he was saying aloud. "You're right. Who knows what amazing, super-cool things exist on the other side of that portal?"]

Thaaaat's about the right attitude to take!

[Screw magic, screw it so very much.]

Sure thing! It might be a one-trip kinda thing but who knows, I might be able to stabilise it to allow inter-world travelling.

[Well, that's sure concerning! He stares as Danny starts wincing and looking...not great.]

Um- you okay there?

[Danny rubs at his forehead a confused expression on his face.]

Do you still call it deja vu if you remember something you're pretty sure never happed?

I think most people call that daydreaming.

[There's a pause.]

But apparently, there are people here whose memories...aren't right? Maybe it's...that? Was anything familiar about it at all?

Not really? I think I was in some kind of high tech tunnel? And I was saying something about a portal. I'm pretty sure I've never seen anything like that in real life.

Huh. Are you sure? Because portals are a pretty specific thing? Or maybe it was a dream you had once that you're suddenly remembering?

I was definitely talking about a portal. Something about exploring what was on the other side?

[Which was... Actually that sounded like something he would do. If something like that was real.]

I don't remember ever dreaming about something like that before? And it felt weirdly real. Like it meant something.

That's definitely something you do with portals, yep.

[It's something he'd do too, every time. It's like a closed door, you've just GOTTA see what's behind it!]

Hrmmm. Have you ever felt like you had a gap in your memory before? I know that...happens here. People remembering things wrong. Or not at all. Maybe it's...filling in the gaps?

I don't think I've ever noticed one? But if I did, how would I know if there's something I don't remember?

Good point. I've never lost my own memory before but I-

[He hesitates and chews his lip as he considers how much he wants to go into this.]

I knew people...back home who lost their memories. They kinda just...came back, slowly? Like they suddenly realised they'd always known a thing they'd forgotten not too long back.

Well, this thing with the portal did kind of just come into my mind. But I can't think of where I could have seen something like that. I couldn't see much of it, but it felt super high tech.

Huh, well- maybe more memories will come back to you as time goes on? You're welcome to help me build mine, if you think it might...jog stuff.

Seriously? I don't know about the memory thing, but I'd love to help out.

Sure! I can use all the help I can get. I managed to put one together back home, but I'll definitely need help getting one up and running here. Then anyone who wants to leave just...can.

Hey, putting one together anywhere is super impressive. And I'm totally on board with figuring out how to do it here. I mean talk about the coolest project ever.

Thanks, the design was one from one of the greatest inventors who ever lived, I just figured out how to make it work a few centuries after he [transfered his consciousness into a monkey, god, no, don't say that, that sounds crazy] ...died.

But it IS pretty cool! And needed! There are so many people who have been trapped here against their free will. I want to help them.
