[When Ghilley grabs him and runs for the door, Maxima's instinct is to move with him rather than remain stubborn, and that's the only thing that allows him to remain on his feet when faced with the strength of a Warrior of Light who's determined to move him whether or not he agrees to the prospect. After they're out and the door is closed behind them, he leans down to extend a hand and help Ghilley up.
The game board is right there, so he sees the dice and the presence of text in the display, and realizes what must have happened at the same exact moment that Ghilley cries his name. That's just barely enough time to pivot, with his hand still extended, and manage to grab the snake's body as it attacks.
