The true winter now grips the city, making the weather turn bitterly cold, with temperatures very often dropping below zero. You will have to wrap up warm if you want to go outside. Huge snow drifts can be found dotted around the city, along with patches of treacherous ice that simply cannot be melted away easily. At least the spirit vein provides a nice show, as it turns to beautiful hues of blue with the changing dominant element. Everything else is pretty miserable though.
MidwinterDespite the horrendous weather, Kaisou is trying to make the best of it. While the Christmas market is packed up and put away for another year, there is still plenty to do outside if you're willing to brave the elements. Shopping Street has an ice rink set up, with people of all ages taking to the ice to test out their skills... or fall flat on their backsides. A few stands dotted near the ice rink offer hot chocolates and warm doughnuts to help take off the worst of the chill.
Kami state park has tried to set up its usual ice palace, with ice and snow built to make impressive walkways, light up with pinks and purples, trying to create a magical experience for people to sightsee. Unfortunately, after November, Kami State Park has been fully dropped into the spirit realm, and that imposing mountain looms over it ominously. On occasion, some Cryo Whopperflowers wander into the attraction to cause problems for the guests. If you could help keep them at bay, the people running the ice palace would be very grateful!
The Kitsune of Blue Fish Park are up to their usual nonsense. This time they're selling ice dresses. The dresses are extremely beautiful, and as they are magical, they can be immediately altered to any size or body shape. The dresses are blue-white, and sparkle like ice on a beautiful fresh morning. They don't feel cold to wear, and you certainly turn heads if you choose to wear one. Maybe this time you have had an actual good thing from them? Except... no. The second you step inside, your ice dress will immediately melt, leaving you wet and in your underwear. Embarrassing.
Festival of IceYou will find flyers dotted around the city, inviting you to visit Stardew Valley. It states the realm has its annual "Festival of Ice" going on and welcomes Kaisou citizens to come and partake in one of their favourite holidays. If you hop on the train from Central Square, you will soon be in Stardew Valley, and will find the place a winter wonderland with ice and snow everywhere. It's still as cold as Kaisou itself, but the little farming community is alive with hustle and bustle.
A travelling merchant with a cart pulled by a... pig wearing a fez and spectacles can be found near the main hub of activity. The merchant has a lot of winter-themed furniture on sale, such as white rugs, blue "ice" banners, and a snowman shaped scarecrow. There are also warming foods on sale, such as pumpkin soup, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Nearby the merchant, you can find Stardew Valley residents hard at work building ice sculptures and igloos to be judged for a contest. They welcome you to give it a shot, if you want. You don't actually win anything - bragging rights matter a lot in this town, it turns out.
The crown jewel of the Festival of Ice is an ice fishing contest- of which there are multiple throughout the holiday. You will find holes cut in the frozen pond, ready for you to drop your rod in. If you need a fishing rod, you'll find Zodiac has put up a stall nearby, selling all sorts of rods, lures and bait. How much help you'll get in finding the prefect equipment really depends on what Zodiac employee is manning the store at the time- maybe you'll get the best for the job, or maybe you'll get something that couldn't even catch a boot. Always playing the corporate game, you will also find lots of Zodiac-branded items on sale. Such as a Stanley Cup (LIMITED ZODIAC SNOWFLAKE EDITION!!!), scarves and hats covered with the Zodiac logo (stylish!) and Zodiac hand warmers.
Once you're ready to start, you are told the rules are the first person to catch five fish wins the contest! It's a real test of your fishing skill, especially against the cold weather. While you fish, a strange looking white wolf might suddenly dart in and steal one of your fish - she's gone before you can catch her, but she seems to be having a lot of fun! Should you be lucky and win the contest, you will receive a prize ticket from Mayor Lewis. You can exchange this with the merchant for a small carved animal from the Chinese Zodiac (plus the cat). Partake in a few fishing contests and try to collect them all!
The dominant element this month is Water! Anyone with an affinity to the water element will find themselves boosted throughout the month. This could mean a boost to their power, having more energy, feeling more inspired with creativity, having better luck on different attempts -- the boost can manifest in all sorts of different ways. By contrast, anyone with an affinity for Fire will be experiencing the opposite. Perhaps their powers will be weaker, they have less energy, they're having a creative block or general worse luck - again it can manifest in all sorts of way and players are free to play with this mechanic as they'd like.
The original OOC plotting post for this event can be found here. There will be a second log about the spirit realm event and a midmonth Zodiac posted on the 15th.
