TLDR: Ash Wednesday is a day for fasting, repentance, and thinking of one's own mortality. So I won't be joining for meal time, and I'm aware I got ash on my forehead.

Basically, don't worry about it. I have no interest in preaching my religion, so just take the chocolate and enjoy Valentine's Day.

I'm not worrying, lad. In truth, my parents were good God-fearing farmers, so we used to observe the fasting season. I'm more surprised the ash on the forehead came back, really—that's not something I saw all that often, when I was young. Catholics were not looked on very kindly.

It's been a long time since then, though. Like I said, the closest I've come to hearing Mass since turning pirate is overhearing a Spanish Mass while in Havana. I'm certain God wouldn't look kindly on me, anyway, for I've broken more than a few of His commandments.

Still: if I remember right, you can only eat bread and vegetables at sundown, yes? I'll see if I can bring some bread from a bakery near the Vogue.

Ha, so I've heard from history lessons. Fortunately for me, killing Catholics fell out of fashion quite awhile ago! o(*￣▽￣*)ブ

Very fortunately for you! Far as I know they stopped killing Catholics before I was born, but even a whiff of Catholicism would stain a man's reputation, among the Brits. It didn't matter as much in the Caribbean, but that might be because of the Spanish.

If you're going to time travel to my era, your best bet's with the Spanish. Last I checked, Catholics had a strong foothold there.

...maybe not in the Caribbean, though. Plenty of pirates who have a fondness for Spanish rum there.
