I can't say I understand what Archer sought to gain. We only spoke at any length once, years ago. As you say, his focus was on the human aspect as far as I was ever able to tell. But then again, it isn't necessarily as though a given Heroic Spirit can choose to be summoned or not--despite what he probably told himself.
